Book Low Temperature Electron Irradiation Studies in Metals

Download or read book Low Temperature Electron Irradiation Studies in Metals written by C. M. Jimenez and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycrystalline platinum and palladium were bombarded with monoenergetic electrons at temperatures below 9K. Changes in electrical resistivity R(E) = delta rho/electron-sq cm were measured in the energy range 1.1 to 3.0 MeV. The experimental values found in this interval are consistent with displacement threshold energies of 37 eV for Pt and 34 eV for Pd. The resistivities per unit defect concentration were found to be 0.00075 and 0.0009 ohm-cm for Pt and Pd respectively. The threshold energies found here, together with values reported for other face centered cubic elements, are shown to be directly proportional to atomic number and inversely proportional to the lattice parameter. It is also shown that the resistivities per unit defect concentration can be correlated with the resistivity at 0C. Analysis of the energy dependence of the damage production indicates atomic displacement cascades are markedly inhibited, which is consistent with deuteron damage studies. Alternative multiple displacement models and possible mechanisms are discussed. (Author).

Book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals

Download or read book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals written by Frederic R. Shober and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of fast-neutron (>1 Mev) irradiation on the mechanical properties of structural metals and alloys was studied. Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. Book Nuclear Science Abstracts

Download or read book Nuclear Science Abstracts written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

Book Probing Unconventional Transport Regimes in Delafossite Metals

Download or read book Probing Unconventional Transport Regimes in Delafossite Metals written by Philippa H. McGuinness and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes in-depth studies of the remarkable electronic transport within the ultrahigh conductivity delafossite metals PtCoO_2 and PdCoO_2 using the tool of focused ion beam (FIB) microstucturing. Despite being first synthesised over 50 years ago, important questions remain regarding both the origin of the unusually high conductivity of these compounds and the consequences of their unique properties for unconventional electronic transport, such as that within the ballistic regime. The thesis explores both these areas. High-energy electron irradiation is used to examine the effects of deliberately introducing point defects into PdCoO_2 and PtCoO_2, demonstrating that the extremely low resistivity of these materials stems from an extreme purity as high as 1 defect in 120,000 atoms, rather than a novel scattering suppression mechanism. In addition, studies of the electronic transport in micron-scale squares of these metals show that their broadly hexagonal Fermi surfaces lead not only to long range ballistic behaviour but novel ballistic regime phenomena which cannot be observed in materials with a higher-symmetry Fermi surface.

Book X ray Studies of Irradiation Induced Dislocation Loops in Metals

Download or read book X ray Studies of Irradiation Induced Dislocation Loops in Metals written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental progress has resulted in the increased use of x-rays for the study of defects and defect clusters in crystals. An outline of the theoretical framework associated with Huang, Stokes-Wilson and integral diffuse scattering from dislocation loops is presented, and an account of recent experiments on radiation induced loops is given. These studies include low temperature, ambient temperature, and elevated temperature irradiations of metals with electrons, neutrons, and accelerated ions, and pertain to the study of the thermal annealing characteristics as well as the as-produced damage structure. The information obtained by x-rays as to the type, size and concentrations of dislocation loops is contrasted with existing electron microscopy, electrical resistivity, and lattice parameter data in order to establish correlations and identify areas of disagreement. Book Radiation Damage in Some Refractory Metals

Download or read book Radiation Damage in Some Refractory Metals written by R.P. Agarwala and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chapter–1 of this timely book, radiation damage in vanadium, niobium, molybdenum and tungsten is discussed at the atomic level; treating – for instance - third-stage recovery in terms of self-interstitials being mobile traps for - predominantly - vacancies. Higher recovery stages are treated by using various techniques, such as: electrical resistivity, electron microscopy, positron annihilation spectroscopy and computer simulation - thus revealing vacancy-cluster break-up in stage-V and interstitial cluster annealing in stage-VI.
