Book excerpt: The development of high-energy DF chemical lasers at operational temperatures below 300 K has prompted the need for detailed kinetic studies of DF in this low-temperature regime. The purpose of this memorandum is to report the investigation of DF relaxation measurements at low temperatures using the laser excited vibrational fluorescence technique. The authors have extensively studied the DF(v=1) self-relaxation rate and the HF(v=1) quenching rate by DF at: 198, 209, 232, 264 and 296 K. In addition to the above measurements, upper limits have been established to the DF(v=1) quenching rate in the presence of argon at each temperature.

Book excerpt: The vibrational excitations of HF and DF and the energy transfer efficiencies for various collision partners were investigated over the temperature range of 1400K to 4100K. The extent of excitation was determined as a function of time by continuously monitoring the infrared emission intensity at the center of the 1-0 vibration-rotation band of the molecule. Collisional efficiencies of HF, N2, O2, F, Cl, and DF in relaxing HF and of DF, HF, and N2 in relaxing DF are reported. A comparison of relaxation data for pure HF taken at elevated temperatures with data currently available from studies near room temperature suggests that long-range attractive forces are, mechanistically, of major importance in the relaxation process. The very high efficiency of atomic chlorine in relaxing HF is discussed in terms of the previous result for atomic fluorine. (Author).

These experiments determine the magnitudes of the total vibrational relaxation rate constants for HF(v = 1 and 2) as well as their temperature dependences. Rotational relaxation data come from these measurements as well. The temporal evolution of individual rotational states observed in the double resonance studies provides level-to-level energy transfer rate constants when analyzed using an iterative fitting scheme which incorporates scaling relations among the rate constants.

Book excerpt: Combining the techniques of direct excitation of overtone vibrations and time resolved spectroscopic detection permits detailed measurements of the vibrational and rotational relaxation of highly vibrationally excited molecules. Using this technique, we have measured vibrational and rotational relaxation in HF(v = 3,4,5) between 300 K and 650 K and have compared these results to various theoretical calculations. Using laser double resonance to probe individual rotational states, we find phenomenological rotational relaxation rate constants which decrease montonically with rotational energy change in the vibrationally excited molecule, and we have directly measured the vibrational relaxation rate constants for v = 1 and v = 2 as well as made a preliminary estimate of the (surprisingly small) fraction of the relaxation which goes by vibration-to-vibration energy transfer.
