Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe experimental and theoretical advances in the use of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for new types of optical devices. Highlights of our work over the cited three-year period include: (1) The first demonstration that light may be made to propagate at ultra-slow group velocities. (2) The suggestion that slow light may lead to a class of nonlinear optical processes which are sufficiently efficient that they may occur at the single-photon level. (3) The experimental demonstration of high-efficiency nonlinear optics in gas phase. In particular, we obtain complete conversion from a 233-nm optical field to a 186-nm field. (4) We have suggested and experimentally demonstrated a new type of EIT-based Raman molecular process. We have demonstrated a source which produces mutually-coherent, equidistant sidebands covering about 50,000 wave-numbers of spectral bandwidth and ranging from 2.94 microns to 195 nm in wavelength. (5) We have shown that we may phase several of these sidebands to produce amplitude- or frequency-modulated light with a modulation frequency which is equal to the fundamental vibrational frequency of molecular deuterium (approximately 90 THz). This experiment is a first step toward the synthesis of subfemtosecond pulses with prescribed temporal shape.

At the Danish universities, this increase has been especially pronounced at the Institute of Physics at the University of Aalborg, where the main activities are centered around fundamental research within the domains of nonlinear quantum optics, nonlinear optics of metals and superconductors, and nonlinear surface optics. In recognition of this it was decided to arrange the first international summer school on nonlinear optics in Denmark at the Institute of Physics at the University of Aalborg. This book is based on the lectures and contributed papers presented at this international summer school, which was held in the period 31 July-4 Au gust 1989. About 60 experienced and younger scientists from 12 different countries participated. Twenty-eight lectures were given by 14 distinguished scientists from the United States, Italy, France, Germany, Scotland, England, and Denmark. In addition to the lectures given by the invited speakers, 11 contributed papers were presented. The programme of the summer school em phasized a treatment of basic physical properties of the nonlinear interaction of light and condensed matter and both theoretical and experimental aspects were covered. Furthermore, general principles as well as topics of current interest in the research literature were discussed.

Book excerpt: Low-light-level optical nonlinearities are of significant interest for performing operations such as single-photon switching and quantum non-demolition measurements on single-photons. To evoke strong nonlinearities from singlephotons, one can enhance the matter-photon interaction using strongly nonlinear materials such as alkali vapors in combination with an appropriate geometry such as a waveguide, which provides a long interaction length while maintaining a small light mode area. We demonstrate for the first time that such a system can be experimentally realized by loading rubidium vapor inside a hollow-core photonic band-gap fiber. Using the technique of light-induced atomic desorption in this geometry, we have generated optical depths greater than 1000. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with control powers 1000 times lower than those used for hot vapor cells in a focused beam geometry. Working with such a high aspect ratio geometry requires us to identify and measure the various sources of decoherence via spectroscopy of desorbed atoms in the fiber. Using such techniques, we also estimate the temperature of the desorbing atoms inside the fiber. The desorption mechanism is studied, and we show that pulsed desorption beams of the right amplitude and duration can be used for generating precisely controlled optical depths. Finally, we investigate the use of various buffer gas techniques for increasing the effective transverse path of the atoms as they move across the fiber in order to reduce their ground state decoherence and map this effect as a function of buffer gas pressure.

This work was stimulated by the lack of data on the spatial and temporal development of generation, despite the obvious importance of such data in the use of giant light pulses in in vestigations of the nonlinear interaction of radiation and matter. From a systematic con sideration of a relatively simple model of a Q-switched laser we analytically investigated two main phases of development of the giant pulse - the phase of linear development of generation, which begins with amplification of the spontaneous emission in the modes, and the phase of nonlinear transverse development, during which the giant light pulse proper is emitted. In ad dition, fo r a thorough inve stigation of the picture of development of the pulse as a whole the equations were numerically integrated. ' Subsequent experiments [26, 27] confirmed the occurrence of transverse development of the giant pulse, while recent experiments on nonlinear amplification [28] have shown the sig nificance of this effect in the propagation of the giant pulse in a nonlinear medium. A know ledge of the transverse development of the giant pulse would appear to be essential for the exact determination of the true strength of the light field in experiments on multi photon pro cesses [29]. The developed theory also leads to recommendations for the design of lasers to generate giant light pulses of minimum length and minimum divergence of emission.
