Book Sustainable Stormwater Management

Download or read book Sustainable Stormwater Management written by Thomas W. Liptan and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential addition to the landscape design library Nature devises ingenious systems for the management and delivery of water in all its phases. No additional infrastructure is required—the water systems are in place, naturally. But once the natural environment has been disrupted by human development, stormwater becomes an issue that requires intervention and ongoing management. Sustainable Stormwater Management, by leading expert Tom Liptan, provides landscape students and professionals with a green approach to landscape design. The hardworking book includes comprehensive information on how to design, install, and maintain a landscape for sustainable stormwater management. It addresses stormwater in the urban environment, relevant environmental and economic policies, and shares case studies of exemplary projects from around the world.

Book Stormwater Design for Sustainable Development

Book Low Impact Development

Download or read book Low Impact Development written by and published by . This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manual introduces general audiences to designing landscapes for urban stormwater runoff -- a primary source of watershed pollution. The goal is to motivate awareness and implementation of LID in a wide cross-section of stakeholders, from property owners to municipal governments that regulate infrastructure development. The manual provides a holistic framework in which a novice homeowner and an experienced developer can each find an equally tranformative role to enact.

Book Generating Low Impact Development Network

Download or read book Generating Low Impact Development Network written by Siyang Wen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: design guidelines offers the opportunities for figuring out how LID networks can be applied to the Tumblin Creek Watershed and revealing issues that would be encountered in creating the LID network. The project concluded that the vegetated open spaces (including parks, greenways, and self-organizing conservation areas), right-of-ways, and parking lots of the Tumblin Creek watershed could form a connected LID network. Designers and developers can leam from the strategies discussed in this project to create sustainable urban environment with LID networks in the future.

Book Lowimpact development an integrated design approach

Download or read book Lowimpact development an integrated design approach written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates sustainable storm water management in an alpine case study in the eastern part of Innsbruck. Firstly the focus lies on the ecological properties of concepts such as Low Impact Development (LID), Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) and Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) especially with regard to the site conditions in the study area. Through a literature research no specific impediments which would hinder an potential implementation could be detected. However there are still general obstacles that discourage a more intensive utilization. In the practical part the Urban Biophysical Environments & Technologies Simulator (UrbanBEATS), a dedicated software for the planning of sustainable storm water management, is used to detect suitable types and locations for the elements of sustainable storm water management in the study area. In a further step the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is applied in order to assess the hydrological performance in quantitative terms. The performance during five different storm events are recorded and show a peak runoff reduction up to 4.26% in the total system, a peak fooding reduction up to 20.28% and a fooding volume reduction up to 17.49%.

Book Sustainable Stormwater Management Technologies

Download or read book Sustainable Stormwater Management Technologies written by Amie Therrien and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much discussion regarding the effects of urban development on stormwater management, especially the negative effects such as flooding, stream erosion, and increased pollution. An emerging sustainable stormwater management philosophy is Low Impact Development (LID), which seeks to reverse these negative effects by designing infrastructure to mimic natural hydrologic processes such as infiltration. This paper considers several lot level stormwater management controls encouraged by LID using the Environmental Protection Agency s modeling program SWMM 5.0. The results show that for a typical residential lot in Toronto, Ontario, LID technologies can have a significant positive impact. For example, peak runoff from a 1-inch unit storm was reduced by 57% with the construction of a green roof or when paved areas are replaced with porous paving.

Book Stormwater Management at EPA Headquarters

Download or read book Stormwater Management at EPA Headquarters written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ariel Rios South Building Courtyard project is part of a larger effort to beautify the EPA headquarters complex and also demonstrate more environmentally sound building and landscaping techniques. The Facilities Management Division, the Office of Water and the General Services Administration have been working on a plan to exhibit stormwater management techniques, sustainable design and low impact development (LID) at the Federal Triangle complex. We hope that this plan will serve as a model for the federal community and will demonstrate many of the practices that can be employed to mitigate the effects of stormwater runoff and reduce combined sewer overflows into our rivers, streams and coastal waters. It will also demonstrate that sustainable design and LID can be utilized in high profile, urban sites that must pass through rigorous aesthetic design reviews.

Book Economic Incentives for Stormwater Control

Download or read book Economic Incentives for Stormwater Control written by Hale W. Thurston and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-08-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with stormwater runoff in urban areas is a problem that is getting bigger and more expensive. As we cover porous surfaces with impervious structures—commercial buildings, parking lots, roads, and houses—finding places for rainwater and snowmelt to soak in becomes harder. Many landscapers, architects, planners, and others have proposed that the use of "green" localized management practices, such as rain gardens and bio-swales, may function as well as traditional "gray" pipes and basins at reducing the effects of stormwater runoff, and do so in a way that is more attractive in the landscape—and possibly also less expensive. To make stormwater management practices work, however, communities need to know the real costs and policy makers need to give people incentives to adopt the best practices. Economic Incentives for Stormwater Control addresses the true costs and benefits of stormwater management practices (SMPs) and examines the incentives that can be used to encourage their adoption. Highlighting the economic aspects, this practical book offers case studies of the application of various stormwater runoff control policies. It also presents the theory behind the different mechanisms used and illustrates successes and potential obstacles to implementation. The book covers: Efficient use of "green" SMPs Low-impact development (LID) style new construction Green infrastructure Property prices and incentive mechanisms to encourage homeowners to retain stormwater on their property Legal, economic, and hydrological issues associated with various incentive mechanisms In-lieu fees and cap-and-trade incentives Primarily concerned with the sociodemographic and economic aspects of people’s participation in stormwater runoff control, this accessible volume explores opportunities available to municipalities, stormwater managers, and stakeholder groups to enact sustainable, effective stormwater management practices.
