Book excerpt: Low-frequency epilimnetic turbulence was measured in Lake Tahoe in September and October 1973. The dissipation rates are generally smaller than but comparable with dissipation rates measured at similar depths in oceanic waters. The vertical thermal microstructure of Lake Tahoe was measured in the epilimnion and thermocline region three times in September 1973, using a modified expendable bathythermograph. The average value of the diffusivity in the thermocline region agreed well with a calculation of the eddy diffusivity by the classical flux-gradient method for the same time interval. Microstructure and classical estimates of the diffusivity in oceanic waters often differ by two orders of magnitude; this disagreement is attributed to the different temporal sampling scales of the two methods. The agreement between microstructure and classical estimates of the diffusivity in Lake Tahoe is taken as an indication that sudden catastrophic mixing events may dominate oceanic thermal mixing by may not be as important to the mixing regime in Lake Tahoe. -- Adapted from abstract.

Growth of wind wave spectra and decay of monochromatic waves are considered. For monochromatic waves the turbulence in the water can greatly increase the rate of wave energy dissipation and that the data can be fitted by an equation with an eddy viscosity term proportional to the wave height, the phase speed of the waves, and the intensity of the larger scale turbulence. Growth of wind waves on turbulent water is faster than in still water; however, maximum wave height in turbulent water is always lower than in still water. Wave energy spectra at the longer fetches in turbulent water show more wave energy at low frequency and less at high frequency than those for still water. Turbulence in water alters the rate of transfer of energy from the wind to the waves, the maximum height allowed and the distribution of wave energy among the various frequencies. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book contains review articles of most of the topics addressed at the conf- ence on Simulations of Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in astrophysics: recent achievements and perspectives which took place from July 2 to 6, 2001 at the Institut Henri Poincar ́e in Paris. We made the choice to publish these lectures in a tutorial form so that they can be read by a broad audience. As a result, this book does not give an exhaustive view of all the subjects addressed during the conference. The main objective of this workshop which gathered about 90 scientists from di?erent ?elds, was to present and confront recent results on the topic of t- bulence in magnetized astrophysical environments. A second objective was to discuss the latest generation of numerical codes, such as those using adaptive mesh re?nement (AMR) techniques. During a plenary discussion at the end of the workshop discussions were held on several topics, often at the heart of vivid controversies. Topics included the timescale for the dissipation of magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence, the role of boundary conditions, the characteristics of imbalanced turbulence, the validity of the polytropic approach to Alfv ́en waves support within interst- lar clouds, the source of turbulence inside clouds devoid of stellar activity, the timescale for star formation, the Alfv ́en Mach number of interstellar gas motions, the formation process for helical ?elds in the interstellar medium. The impact of small upon large scales was also discussed.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear wave-wave interactions in turbulent jets were investigated based on the integrated energy of each scale of motion in a cross section of the jet. The analysis indicates that two frequency components in the axisymmetric mode can interact with other background frequencies in the axisymmetric mode, thereby amplifying an enormous number of other frequencies. Two frequency components in a single helical mode cannot, by themselves, amplify other frequency components. But combinations of frequency components of helical and axisymmetric modes can amplify other frequencies in other helical modes. The present computations produce several features consistent with experimental observations such as: (1) dependency of the interactions on the initial phase differences, (2) enhancement of the momentum thickness under multifrequency forcing, and (3) the increase in background turbulence under forcing. In a multifrequency-excited jet, mixing enhancement was found to be a result of the turbulence enhancement rather than simply the amplification of forced wave components. The excitation waves pump energy from the mean flow to the turbulence, thus enhancing the latter. The high frequency waves enhance the turbulence close to the jet exit, but, the low frequency waves are most effective further downstream. Mankbadi, Reda R. A low frequency wave, the "swell", can drive the collective mode by compressing and expanding the field of high frequency waves, the "chop". Through non-linear interactions, the chop responds with its own collective stiffness and inertia. This inertia should cause modulations of the chop amplitude to lag in phase behind the forcing from the swell. Two methods are presented for investigating the phase relationships between the chop amplitude and the swell. Method one employs the Fast Fourier Transform to examine directly the power levels at various frequencies. Method two employs digital signal processing to separate the swell and chop frequencies and the Hilbert Transform to compute the instantaneous phase of the swell and instantaneous amplitude of the chop. Various plotting techniques permit the examination of the relationships between the amplitude of the chop and the phase of the swell. The second method provided evidence of the collective mode when applied to data collected in a wave tank experiment described herein. Distribution Limitation(s).

The principal speaker at the conference was Professor V. E. Zakharov who delivered a series of ten lectures outlining the historical and ongoing developments in the field. Some twenty other researchers also made presentations and it is their work which makes up the bulk of this text. Professor Zakharov's opening chapter serves as a general introduction to the other papers, which for the most part are concerned with the application of the theory in various fields. While the word "turbulence" is most often associated with f:l. uid dynamics it is in fact a dominant feature of most systems having a large or infinite number of degrees of freedom. For our purposes we might define turbulence as the chaotic behavior of systems having a large number of degrees of freedom and which are far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Work in field can be broadly divided into two areas: • The theory of the transition from smooth laminar motions to the disordered motions characteristic of turbulence. • Statistical studies of fully developed turbulent systems. In hydrodynamics, work on the transition question dates back to the end of the last century with pioneering contributions by Osborne Reynolds and Lord Rayleigh.

This two-volume monograph deals with the theory of turbulence viewed as a general physical phenomenon.
