Book excerpt: Excerpt from Low Energy Scattering by a Compound System: Positrons on Hydrogen The formalism, developed by Kato, which gives upper and lower bounds on the phase shift for the scattering of a particle from a center of force is shown to have useful applications when the scatterer is a compound system. In particular, the problem of low energy positron scattering from, atomic hydrogen, with zero total orbital angular momentum, is studied. It is shown that at zero energy the ordinary variational calculation, which ignores second order contributions, provides a bound on the scattering length, from which a bound on the cross section is deduced. For non-zero energies a bound on the phase shift may similarly be obtained, but for a fictitious problem with cut-off potentials. If the energy is sufficiently small (less than 3 e.v., say) the error thus incurred is expected to be negligibly small. Numerical calculations performed at k = 0 and ka = 0.2 lead to the result that the effects of polarization are large enough to cause the positron to be on the whole attracted to the hydrogen atom. It is shown, independently of the Kato formalism, that in general a bound on the scattering length may be obtained from the ordinary variational calculation provided no composite bound state exists for the system. Book Scattering Theory of Molecules Atoms and Nuclei

Download or read book Scattering Theory of Molecules Atoms and Nuclei written by Luiz Felipe Canto and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to give a coherent and comprehensive account of quantum scattering theory with applications to atomic, molecular and nuclear systems. The motivation for this is to supply the necessary theoretical tools to calculate scattering observables of these many-body systems. Concepts which are seemingly different for atomic/molecular scattering from those of nuclear systems, are shown to be the same once physical units such as energy and length are diligently clarified. Many-body resonances excited in nuclear systems are the same as those in atomic systems and come under the name of Feshbach resonances. We also lean heavily on semi-classical methods to explain the physics of quantum scattering OCo especially the interference seen in the angle dependence of the cross section. Having in mind a wide readership, the book includes sections on scattering in two dimensions which is of use in surface physics. Several problems are also included at the end of each of the chapters.

Book Underwater Scattering and Radiation

Download or read book Underwater Scattering and Radiation written by Allan D. Pierce and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater Scattering and Radiation describes the relevant theoretical foundations of underwater scattering and radiation. Acoustic scattering from elastic solids is discussed, and variational formulations in acoustic radiation and scattering are presented. Surface waves and quasi-cylindrical modes are also explored, along with the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral corollaries. Comprised of two chapters, this volume begins with a comprehensive account of scattering by elastic objects, focusing on the classic idealized shapes of spheres and infinite cylinders. The reader is introduced to important concepts such as normal modes, the S-matrix, and the T-matrix as well as resonances, whispering gallery modes, Franz modes, and Stoneley waves. Subsequent sections describe methods for treating scattering by elastic bodies of more general shapes. The T-matrix formalism is discussed and then applied to spheroidal scatterers and finite cylinders. The second chapter analyzes how variational principles can be used in acoustics, with the choice of topics directed toward applications to underwater acoustic radiation and scattering. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Book Low Energy Electron Scattering from Molecules Biomolecules and Surfaces

Download or read book Low Energy Electron Scattering from Molecules Biomolecules and Surfaces written by Petr Carsky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the turn of the 21st century, the field of electron molecule collisions has undergone a renaissance. The importance of such collisions in applications from radiation chemistry to astrochemistry has flowered, and their role in industrial processes such as plasma technology and lighting are vital to the advancement of next generation devices. Furthermore, the development of the scanning tunneling microscope highlights the role of such collisions in the condensed phase, in surface processing, and in the development of nanotechnology. Low-Energy Electron Scattering from Molecules, Biomolecules and Surfaces highlights recent progress in the theory and experiment of electron-molecule collisions, providing a detailed review of the current state of knowledge of electron molecule scattering—theoretical and experimental—for the general physicist and chemist interested in solving practical problems. In few other branches of science is the collaboration between theorists and experimentalists so topical. Covering advancements in practical problems, such as those met in plasma physics, microelectronics, nanolithography, DNA research, atmospheric chemistry, and astrochemistry, this book describes the formal general scattering theory and description of the experimental setup at a level the interested non-expert can appreciate.

Download or read book Bounds on Scattering Phase Shifts for Compound Systems Classic Reprint written by Leonard Rosenberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bounds on Scattering Phase Shifts for Compound Systems It might be noted that the same remarks are applicable for compound system scattering with regard to the error introduced by truncation as were applicable for one body scattering. As examples, consider the scat tering of electrons or positrons by Hydrogen. An estimate based on the method of the present paper is that for R of the order of 15 Bohr radii. Book A New Development at the Intersection of Nuclear Structure and Reaction Theory

Download or read book A New Development at the Intersection of Nuclear Structure and Reaction Theory written by Steven Karataglidis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-22 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights a major advance in low-energy scattering theory: the Multi-Channel Algebraic Scattering (MCAS) theory, which represents an attempt to unify structure and reaction theory. It solves the Lippmann–Schwinger equations for low-energy nucleon-nucleus and alpha-nucleus scattering in momentum space, allowing both the bound and scattering states in the compound nucleus formed to be described. Results of various cases are presented and discussed.

Download or read book Neutron Diffusion written by S. Chakraverty and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for a systematic understanding of nuclear diffusion theory along with fuzzy/interval/stochastic uncertainty. This will serve to be a benchmark book for graduate & postgraduate students, teachers, engineers and researchers throughout the globe. In view of the recent developments in nuclear engineering, it is important to study the basic concepts of this field along with the diffusion processes for nuclear reactor design. Also, it is known that uncertainty is a must in every field of engineering and science and, in particular, with regards to nuclear-related problems. As such, one may need to understand the nuclear diffusion principles/theories corresponding with reliable and efficient techniques for the solution of such uncertain problems. Accordingly this book aims to provide a new direction for readers with basic concepts of reactor physics as well as neutron diffusion theory. On the other hand, it also includes uncertainty (in terms of fuzzy, interval, stochastic) and their applications in nuclear diffusion problems in a systematic manner, along with recent developments. The underlying concepts of the presented methods in this book may very well be used/extended to various other engineering disciplines viz. electronics, marine, chemical, mining engineering and other sciences such as physics, chemistry, biotechnology etc. This book then can be widely applied wherever one wants to model their physical problems in terms of non-probabilistic methods viz. fuzzy/stochastic for the true essence of the real problems.
