Book Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction and Reflection Electron Imaging of Surfaces

Download or read book Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction and Reflection Electron Imaging of Surfaces written by P.K. Larsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop in "Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction and Reflection Electron Imaging of Surfaces" held at the Koningshof conference center, Veldhoven, the Netherlands, June 15-19, 1987. The main topics of the workshop, Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) and Reflection Electron Microscopy (REM), have a common basis in the diffraction processes which high energy electrons undergo when they interact with solid surfaces at grazing angles. However, while REM is a new technique developed on the basis of recent advances in transmission electron microscopy, RHEED is an old method in surface crystallography going back to the discovery of electron diffraction in 1927 by Davisson and Germer. Until the development of ultra high vacuum techniques in the 1960's made instruments using slow electrons more accessable, RHEED was the dominating electron diffraction technique. Since then and until recently the method of Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) largely surpassed RHEED in popularity in surface studies. The two methods are closely related of course, each with its own specific advantages. The grazing angle geometry of RHEED has now become a very useful feature because this makes it ideally suited for combination with the thin growth technique of Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). This combination allows in-situ studies of freshly grown and even growing surfaces, opening up new areas of research of both fundamental and technological importance.

Book Recent Developments in Oxide and Metal Epitaxy Theory and Experiment

Download or read book Recent Developments in Oxide and Metal Epitaxy Theory and Experiment written by Mark Yeadon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-film epitaxy is integral to many current and emerging technologies, and continued progress in solving critical issues is essential to the realization of new devices. This book, first published in 2000, focuses on progress in solving fundamental issues in the epitaxial growth of metals and oxides. Insights from both experiment, and modeling are combined to facilitate cross fertilization of ideas and understanding. Highlighted is the use of in situ characterization techniques for enhancing the efficiency of materials development. Thin-film research is often empirical in nature. Techniques for minimizing the time spent exploring the complex parameter space in order to optimize growth and processing conditions are of particular value. Among the techniques discussed are spectroscopic ellipsometry and ion scattering and recoil spectrometry, LEEM (low-energy electron microscopy), STM (scanning tunneling microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and RHEED (reflection high-energy electron diffraction). Topics include: growth and dynamics of metal films; structure and oxidation of metal films and surfaces; in situ studies of oxide growth and epitaxial growth of oxides.

Download or read book The Study of Alloy Surfaces by Low Energy Electron Diffraction written by W. D. Robertson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made for developing capability in low energy electron diffraction (LEED): (1) to determine the detailed structure of crystal surfaces, (2) to identify impurities on the surface, in particular of nominally very pure gold, (3) to remove impurities from the surface, and (4) to design apparatus which will contribute to the development of scattering theory from low energy electrons and at the same time provide quantitative measurement of adsorption parameters at low temperatures. Book Development of an Ultrafast Low Energy Electron Diffraction Setup

Download or read book Development of an Ultrafast Low Energy Electron Diffraction Setup written by Max Gulde and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an Ultrafast Low-Energy Electron Diffraction (ULEED) system that reveals ultrafast structural changes on the atomic scale. The achievable temporal resolution in the low-energy regime is improved by several orders of magnitude and has enabled the melting of a highly-sensitive, molecularly thin layer of a polymer crystal to be resolved for the first time. This new experimental approach permits time-resolved structural investigations of systems that were previously partially or totally inaccessible, including surfaces, interfaces and atomically thin films. It will be of fundamental importance for understanding the properties of nanomaterials so as to tailor their properties.
