Reduction in area as measured in tension tests was found to be a good parameter in determining fatigue life. Holdtimes in tension of 1 h or less did not affect the fatigue life but one of 5 h reduced it. An atmosphere containing iodine reduces the fatigue life under the conditions tested by 40 percent.

Since then research in low cycle fatigue has proceeded rapidly. The vital interest of engineers and researchers in communicating the rapid advances in the ongoing research in low cycle fatigue has encouraged me to initiate again the Second International Conference which was held in Munich, FRG, 7-11 September 1987. Failure in low cycle fatigue represents a serious problem in the design and opera tion of highly stressed structures. Under complex loading and environmental cir cumstances, especially for high temperature services, reliable life prediction can not be expected without detailed consideration of the failure mechanism and with out extensive use of mechanistic approaches. The purpose of this conference was to provide a forum to discuss the advances in recent research in the field of low cycle fatigue. The conference was intended to help to further bridge the gap between those who are involved in basic research, and the engineers who have to perform the design of highly stressed structural components.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of the present work is to study the load and strain cyclic behavior of Zircaloy-4 in the temperature range 573 to 873 K. Load cyclic tests are performed at 673 and 873 K for different values of R = ?min/?max, keeping ?max and the load rate constant at each temperature. At 873 K the lifetime and the cyclic creep rate show a time-dependent behavior, with the mean strain being activated by the mean stress. For zero values of the mean stress (R = -1) no appreciable net strain accumulation occurs and failure by fatigue precedes failure by cyclic creep. At 673 K the mean strain is activated by the mean stress only in the range 1 > R > 0. In the 0 > R > -1 range the cyclic creep becomes faster on decreasing the mean stress up to some R value between -0.9 and -1. This effect is consistent with a dislocation model where the substructure formed in tension is unstable when the loading direction is reversed.

The results given in this paper concern only recrystallized material. Low-cycle fatigue curves and creep behavior laws under high stresses have been established. Sequential tests of pure fatigue and creep-fatigue were performed.
