Book excerpt: This dissertation introduces new technologies and techniques for low-cost phased arrays and scanning antennas. Special emphasis is placed on new approaches for low-cost millimeter-wave beam control. Several topics are covered. A novel reconfigurable grating antenna is presented for low-cost millimeter-wave beam steering. The versatility of the approach is proven by adapting the design to dual-beam and circular-polarized operation. In addition, a simple and accurate procedure is developed for analyzing these antennas. Designs are presented for low-cost microwave/millimeter-wave phased-array transceivers with extremely broad bandwidth. The target applications for these systems are mobile satellite communications and ultra-wideband radar. Monolithic PIN diodes are a useful technology, especially suited for building miniaturized control components in microwave and millimeter-wave phased arrays. This dissertation demonstrates a new strategy for extracting bias-dependent small-signal models for monolithic PIN diodes. The space solar-power satellite (SPS) is a visionary plan that involves beaming electrical power from outer space to the earth using a high-power microwave beam. Such a system must have retrodirective control so that the high-power beam always points on target. This dissertation presents a new phased-array architecture for the SPS system that could considerably reduce its overall cost and complexity. In short, this dissertation presents technologies and techniques that reduce the cost of beam steering at microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies. The results of this work should have a far-ranging impact on the future of wireless systems.

Book excerpt: Finally, we develop a novel non-contact characterization method for simultaneous characterization of conventional antenna parameters, including the antenna port input impedance, antenna gain and radiation pattern, without requiring a network analyzer connection to the antenna port. This method treats the test antenna and the network analyzer as a 2-port open-air fixture whose network representation corresponds to the desired antenna parameters. The unknown network parameters of the 2-port open-air are determined via a calibration process, and then related to antenna impedance and gain as a function of frequency. Additionally, the radiation pattern of the test antenna can also be characterized using measured reflection coefficient at the network analyzer port for two offset-short terminations of the test antenna port, while mechanically scanning the test antenna over the desired angular range.

Book excerpt: Ultrawideband (UWB) phased antenna arrays are critical to the success of future multi-functional communication, sensing, and countermeasure systems, which will utilize a few UWB phased arrays in place of multiple antennas on a platform. The success of this new systems approach relies in part on the ability to manufacture and assemble low-cost UWB phased arrays with excellent radiation characteristics. This dissertation presents the theory and design of a new class of UWB arrays that is based on unbalanced fed tightly-coupled horizontal dipoles over a ground plane. Practical implementation of this concept leads to two inexpensive wideband array topologies, the Banyan Tree Antenna (BTA) Array, and the Planar Ultrawideband Modular Antenna (PUMA) Array. The key challenge in designing unbalanced-fed tightly-coupled dipole arrays lies in the control of a common mode resonance that destroys UWB performance. This work introduces a novel feeding strategy that eliminates this resonance and results in wideband, wide-angle radiation. More importantly, the new feeding scheme is simple and intuitive, and can be implemented at low-cost in both vertically and planarly-integrated phased array architectures. Another desirable byproduct of this topology is the electrical and mechanical modularity of the aperture, which enables easy manufacturability and assembly. A theoretical framework is presented for the new phased array topologies, which is then applied to the design of innite BTA and PUMA arrays that achieve 4:1 and 5:1 bandwidths, respectively. A practical application of this technology is demonstrated through the full design, fabrication, and measurement of a 7.25-21GHz 16x16 dual-pol PUMA array prototype for SATCOM applications.

Book excerpt: Demands of multi-standard operation have risen in millimeter-wave 5G phased arrays, in order to achieve more band coverage, reduce fabrication and deployment costs and realize inter-band carrier aggregation. This dissertation investigates dual-band and wideband design approaches to realize multi-standard phased array systems. In the dual-band approach, a 32-element dual-band, dual-beam phased array is designed by integrating dual-band patch antennas with commercial narrowband beamformers. Another design introduces an 8-element dual-band, dual-polarized, dual-beam phased array targeted at compact system applications. Both designs achieve 26-29 GHz and 37-41 GHz operation. In the wideband phased array approach, a novel stacked wideband dipole antenna is developed and integrated with a wideband SiGe Tx/Rx beamformers to achieve operation of 23-46 GHz. A single-polarized 64-element array and a dual-polarized 8-element array are then demonstrated with state-of-the-art performance. The 64-element array achieves a maximum EIRP of 50 dBm at P1dB operation, and 8-element dual-pol. array achieves 29 dBm. Both arrays demonstrate less than 4% EVM when transmitting 64-QAM 5G OFDM signal with 6-8 dB backoff from P1dB.

Book excerpt: A proliferation of large active electronically-scanned arrays (AESA) is enabling precise beam steering in wireless communication links at millimeter wave carrier frequencies. In addition to radiated power, linear and nonlinear distortion from the transceivers and array elements must also be examined to discern their relative effects on received signal quality in the far field. For digital signals, error vector magnitude (EVM) represents a complete measure of the amplitude and phase distortion in a wireless channel. This work focuses on the analysis, simulation, and measurement of the EVM resulting from transmission by millimeter-wave antennas and phased arrays. An ultra-wideband (UWB) model of antenna transmission based on the vector effective length is presented and applied to EVM simulation of over-the-air (OTA) links for a microstrip patch and conical horn antenna at two different 5G FR2 bands. The EVM for the conical horn link is measured using a multi-port vector network analyzer (VNA) and compact antenna test range (CATR) provided by Keysight Technologies in Santa Rosa, CA. The same simulation and measurement techniques are then applied to analysis of phased array transmission to understand the effects of beam squint and embedded element frequency response. The EVM of individual active array element channels and the fully-active 8x8 phased array are measured as a function of RF carrier power, far field observation angles, beam scan angles, and modulation rates using MATLAB instrument control scripts. The feasibility of estimating the EVM of far field antenna links from the planar near fields (PNF) is also investigated. A theoretical framework for calculating EVM from wideband far fields derived through PNF transformations and results from PNF simulations and measurements of a Ka-band conical horn and 8x8 phased array are presented. Finally, the effective range of a vehicle-to-infrastructure antenna link at 5.9 GHz is estimated by calculating received power along a linear highway using the Friis free space transmission equation and full-wave simulations of base station and vehicular antenna arrays.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents millimeter-wave transmit/receive phased-arrays at 60 GHz, which are used to demonstrate long-range and high data-rate communication links. A 32-element one-dimensional (1-D) phased-array is built with 2$\times$2 beamformer chips flipped on a low-cost printed circuit board. Series-fed microstrip antennas are used, which limits the bandwidth to around 2 GHz at 64 GHz center frequency. The phased-array scans only in the azimuth plane with a 3$^o$ beamwidth and has a wide beam of 12$^o$ in elevation. The phased-array’s high effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) of around 42 dBm and low noise figure of 6.5 dB enable long-range communication at 500 Mbps over 800 m. A two-dimensional (2-D) scanning phased-array is also built using the same beamformer chips on a more complex multilayer board. The 2-D phased-array has an EIRP of 45 dBm in saturation and scans up to +/- 15$^o$ in the elevation plane and +/-50$^o$ in the azimuth. Stacked microstrip antennas are used, enabling a wide bandwidth of $\sim$8 GHz for the phased-array. Data-rates of up to 30 Gbps are achieved with 64-QAM modulation using the full bandwidth of the phased-array. An analysis of intermodulation effects in receive-mode phased-arrays is presented and verified through experimental results from a Ka-band 5G phased-array. The intermodulation products are shown to peak at scan angles which do not correspond to the interferer directions. Experimental evidence is presented to show that the adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) of transmit phased-arrays improves with larger number of elements at a given backoff from the compression point. This implies better transmit efficiency in larger phased-arrays. Finally, techniques are presented for reducing the number of phase-shifters in a 2-D phased-array while maintaining a limited scan range in the vertical and horizontal planes. It is shown that the number of phase-shifters can be reduced by 75\%, while maintaining a scan range of +/-15$^o$ in the elevation and +/-40$^o$ in the azimuth.

Book excerpt: In this chapter, we review the worldwide progress referred to designing optical beamforming networks intended to the next-generation ultra-wideband millimeter-wave phased array antennas for incoming fifth-generation wireless systems, which in recent years is under the close attention of worldwide communication community. Following the tendency, we study in detail the design concepts below true-time-delay photonics beamforming networks based on switchable or continuously tunable control. Guided by them, we highlight our NI AWRDE CAD-based simulation experiments in the frequency range of 57,Äì76¬†GHz on design of two 16-channel photonics beamforming networks using true-time-delay approach. In the first scheme of the known configuration, each channel includes laser, optical modulator, and 5-bit binary switchable chain of optical delay lines. The second scheme has an optimized configuration based on only 3-bit binary switchable chain of optical delay lines in each channel, all of which are driven by four lasers with wavelength division multiplexing and a common optical modulator. In the result, the novel structural and cost-efficient configuration of microwave-photonics beamforming network combining wavelength division multiplexing and true-time-delay techniques is proposed and investigated.
