Book Low Bridge Ahead

Download or read book Low Bridge Ahead written by Donald E. Mellon, Ph.D. and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some economic historians attribute the growth and prosperity of the city of New York to the successful completion of the Erie Canal in 1825. Others disagree, citing the importance of the “Cotton Triangle” whereby the Port became the financial and trade intermediary between the producers of “King Cotton” in America’s Southland and the rapidly growing textile industry of England. This thesis examines the publicly initiated role of entrepreneur assumed by the citizens of New York state through their legislature and personified by their Governor DeWitt Clinton. It also considers the facts and statistics that champion the school of thought which held “Old Erie” superior to “King Cotton” in assessing the importance of events leading to New York’s ascendency. As the reader navigates the Canal packet boat, his/her way along the waterway avoiding the hazards occasionally encountered, the author, acting as boatswain, cautions “Low Bridge Ahead.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who built and used the Erie Canal were a bizarre society, proud pioneers on the waterway known in song and story as "the Horse Ocean," "the Roaring Giddap," or "the Raging Erie." Their considerable influence on American life and literature is the basis of this book. Canallers were colorful characters, from the "hoggee" on the towpath to the "shipshape macaroni" with stovepipe hat and badge of service taking command of a packet with the pride of an admiral, even though he was restricted by law to a speed of four miles per hour! Games and diversions were rough-and-tumble, fighting being as natural as breathing to the canallers. Stories about heroes like Sam Patch and Paddy Ryan, or the big fish that could haul a canal boat, or the big pumpkin that drained the canal—these were logical products of this "frontier" atmosphere. So were the songs—carefree, bawdy, or sad, inspired by the canal and sung throughout the land. Photographs and drawings, music and words to folk songs, maps, notes, and index are included in this first paperback edition.

Few people are interested and the frog dies of it. However, Dr. Peter Jonas takes a broad and practical approach examining the connection between humor and learning. The book uses a meta-analysis and meta-synthesis to identify nine areas where humor significantly improves various aspects of the learning environment.
