Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Book Award Finalist But God speaks through wombs, birthing prophetic utterances. . . . Enough of this unbelieving religion that masquerades as faith. Divine favor is placed on what we have disgraced. In God Speaks Through Wombs, Drew Jackson explores the first eight chapters of Luke's Gospel in a new poetic register. These are declarative poems, faithfully proclaiming the gospel story in all its liberative power. Here the gospel is the "fresh words / that speak of / things impossible." From the Magnificat ("That girl can sing! . . . She has a voice / That can shatter shackles") to the baptism of Christ ("I stepped in / Committing insurrection"), this collection helps us hear the hum of deliverance—against all hope—that's been in the gospel all along.

With setting moons, talking tulips, and the peacefulness found in a horse's mane, the poems in Christian Schlegel's debut collection HONEST JAMES might be as difficult to describe as the layered notes of an ancient perfume. "A famous notion twirled and froze. I made it mine. / Again it twirled." This unabashedly lyrical collection, which never shies away from rhyme, includes various cameos, including Goethe in its second section, with the end result being what John Ashbery calls "one of the strangest books of poetry to come along in some time." "In Christian Schlegel's HONEST JAMES you'll find literary mannerism lightly wielded, gesture for its own sake, a bit of lace at the cuff. The title a reference to Wordsworth's Prelude reflects the antiquing and old world light in these pages. Schlegel knits his syntax to invite the savor of the micro-novelistic vignettes he evokes. Period mood is produced with snippets of Latin and German, a few variations on Goethe. Were it not for his tendency to slip into four-beat rhythm and use rhyme, one could think these poems fragments of memorable lines torn from pre-twentieth-century European fiction. Time to dim the sconces and start dreaming." Jennifer Moxley "One of the strangest books of poetry to come along in some time, Christian Schlegel's HONEST JAMES seems to draw inspiration from the back corridors and anterooms of poetry. One senses echoes of Kipling, Browning, Landor, even Robert W. Service, and other late 19th-century hot shots, but it doesn't seem to be a question of Schlegel taking cues from other poets, rather his magpie-like attraction to bits of history imbedded in forgotten texts. In a note he tells of using a volume of 'plain prose translations' from Goethe 'consulted sparingly and departed from liberally.' Students of the archaic will find much to detain them here. It's as though a new process of influencing has been unearthed." John Ashbery "Of equal parts wariness and devotion, music and restraint, wit and loss, these moving poems mark Christian Schlegel as a poet with an astonishing feel for the English language, a living relationship with its literatures, and the gift of a precise wisdom." Susan Wheeler"

Book Freedom Love

  • ISBN : 146706503X
  • Pages : 67 pages

Download or read book Freedom Love written by Kelly Armstrong and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry can be a medicine that heals and sustains. Everyone had their own way of surviving. Some people escape from circumstances in their lives by drinking, doing drugs, falling into depression, and many other things, not knowing that there is a healthier way out and most importantly, seeing hope, peace and light at the end! I survived with everyday life problems by reading and writing poetry. Poetry is a form of expression. Poetry can touch your heart and soul forever making a change in your life for the better. Allowing you to forget about your past failures and hurts and motivating you to move forward into the future with much success and happiness. Its something about poetry that frees the spirit; the words in a poem seem to take wings that can fly in and out of our spirits that only the eye of the spirit and the ear of the heart can define. It is often said that poetry travels straight to ones heart. We all hurt at times, from failed relationships, the death of a loved one, sickness, addiction or whatever. But know that God sees you and all you are going through and He is working on your behalf whether you see it or not. Just trust in God for He has all the answers. My reason for writing Freedom Love is to help heal hurting people through my poetry. Letting them know that I understand what they are feeling and what they are going through, but also letting them know that you can overcome the obstacles in your life, filled with peace, love, happiness, success, direction, and answers. Then you will be able to move forward with fulfilling your dreams and future goals, trusting and having faith in God.

Book My Heart Makes Its Home in a Faraway Land

Download or read book My Heart Makes Its Home in a Faraway Land written by Lisa Hare Wimberly and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is comprised of poems and reflections that the Lord has given me over the past few years. Finding that so many need to wake up to the fact that the Lord is coming back soon, I have felt an urgency for others to read and hear what, I feel, comes from the heart of God. We don’t know when He will return for His own, but He has called me to do my part in sharing His love and His Word with those who will hear… I began writing poetry as my mother-in-law lay in the hospital in Elkhart, Indiana… just days before going home to meet her Lord Jesus, whom she loved and served for over 60 years of her life. Even though I knew her for only four short years, during that time she inspired a longing in me to know my Lord better and to draw closer to Him. As a result, my Father in heaven began pouring into me words that became poems and songs… Some of the poems may make you laugh, some may make you cry, but they will all make you THINK!

Book excerpt: Jay Hulme is an award-winning transgender poet, performer, educator and speaker. In late 2019, his fascination with old church buildings turned into a life-changing encounter with the God he had never believed in, and he was baptised in the Anglican church. In this new poetry collection, Jay details his journey through faith and baptism during an unprecedented world-wide pandemic. As he finds God in the ruined factories and polluted canals of his home city, Jonah is heckled over etymology, angels appear in tube stations, and Jesus sits atop a multi-story car park. Cathedrals are trans, trans people are cathedrals, and amidst it all God reaches out to meet us exactly where we are. Jay’s poetry explores belief in the modern world and offers a perspective on queer faith that will appeal not only to Christians, but young members of the LGBT+ community who are interested in faith but unsure of where to start.
