Book Ingressive and Egressive Verbs in English

Download or read book Ingressive and Egressive Verbs in English written by Daniele Franceschi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fine-grained analysis of the most common ingressive and egressive verbs in present-day English in terms of the semantic-pragmatic and cognitive factors responsible for their various structural representations. It draws upon the fundamental assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics, according to which grammar is symbolic and conceptually motivated, and focuses in particular on the ability of these predicates to be integrated into constructions as a result of metonymic and metaphoric processes, which impose a well-defined set of constraints. The book supports its analysis and findings with examples both taken from three of the major corpora of English, namely BNC, COCA and GloWbe, and retrieved through ad hoc Internet searches. Although the literature on English aspectual verbs is vast, there are no studies of the language-external factors responsible for their different configurations. As such, this book fills this gap by offering linguists and students of linguistics a detailed investigation of this topic. It will also be of value to scholars with a more general interest in the linguistic evidence of cognitive activity in meaning construction.

Book A Visual Astronomer s Photographic Guide to the Deep Sky

Download or read book A Visual Astronomer s Photographic Guide to the Deep Sky written by Stefan Rumistrzewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 15 years or so there has been a huge increase in the popularity of astrophotography with the advent of digital SLR cameras and CCD imagers. These have enabled astronomers to take many images and, indeed, check images as they scan the skies. Processing techniques using computer software have also made ‘developing’ these images more accessible to those of us who are ‘chemically challenged!’ And let’s face it – some of the pictures you see these days in magazines, books, and on popular web forums are, frankly, amazing! So, why bother looking through the eyepiece you ask? Well, for one thing, setting up the equipment is quicker. You just take your ‘scope out of the garage or, if you’re lucky enough to own one, open the roof of your observatory, align the ‘scope and off you go. If you have an equatorial mount, you’ll still need to roughly polar align, but this really takes only a few moments. The ‘imager’ would most likely need to spend more time setting up. This would include very accurate polar alignment (for equatorial mounts), then finding a guide star using his or her finder, checking the software is functioning properly, and c- tinuous monitoring to make sure the alignment is absolutely precise throu- out the imaging run. That said, an imager with a snug ‘obsy’ at the end of the garden will have a quicker time setting up, but then again so will the ‘visual’ observer.

Book Mali Under the Night Sky

Download or read book Mali Under the Night Sky written by and published by Cinco Puntos Press. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mali Under the Night Sky, a 2011 Skipping Stones honor book, is the true story of Laotian American artist Malichansouk Kouanchao, whose family was forced by civil war to flee Laos when she was five. Before the war began, Mali lived an idyllic life in a community where she felt safe and was much loved. But the coming war caused her family to flee to another country and a life that was less than ideal. What did she carry with her? She carried her memories. And they in turn carried her across the world, sharing where she is from and all that she loves with the people she meets. Terry Hong of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program’s BOOK DRAGON, giving context to Youme’s remarkable book, said, “Today, December 7, marks the 69th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, ‘a date which will live in infamy,’… Seven decades later, infamy lives on, stealing childhoods, families, homes, lives. Now as another year comes to a close, we pray for peace … again and again … again and again … [Mali Under the Night Sky] is another hopeful, urgent prayer.” And the Midwest Book Review calls it “a soul-stirring picturebook about the difficulties faced by wartime refugees, and deserves the highest recommendation.” Youme Landowne is an energetic and joyful painter, book artist, and activist who thrives in the context of public art. Youme has lived in and learned from the United States, Kenya, Japan, Laos, Haiti, and Cuba. In all of these places, she has worked with communities and individuals to make art that honors personal and cultural wisdom, creating community murals, illustrating tiny books, and teaching poetry in schools.

  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Facing Mount Kenya written by Jomo Kenyatta and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 1978-12-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing Mount Kenya, first published in 1938, is a monograph on the life and customs of the Gikuyu people of central Kenya prior to their contact with Europeans. It is unique in anthropological literature for it gives an account of the social institutions and religious rites of an African people, permeated by the emotions that give to customs and observances their meaning. It is characterised by both insight and a tinge of romanticism. The author, proud of his African blood and ways of thought, takes the reader through a thorough and clear picture of Gikuyu life and customs, painting an almost utopian picture of their social norms and the sophisticated codes by which all aspects of the society were governed. This book is one of a kind, capturing and documenting traditions fast disappearing. It is therefore a must-read for all who want to learn about African culture.

Book From Beyond the Skies

Download or read book From Beyond the Skies written by Juli Boit and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen years ago, Juli Boit, a 25-year-old nurse practitioner, moved from Los Angeles to a small village in Kenya to be a part of an HIV program. In 2009, she founded a hospice called Kimbilio where men, women, and children come either to heal or to be loved until they die. On an ordinary Friday afternoon in 2016, a three-pound baby boy, Ryan, wrapped in pink was brought to Kimbilio. He had been born prematurely earlier that week. His mom passed away while giving birth, and neighbors miraculously kept Ryan alive on water alone for five days until they brought him to the hospice. Juli and her husband, Titus, brought Ryan to their home to care for him, simply wanting to make sure he would survive. When Ryan was six months old, he, along with two of his other siblings, were diagnosed with sickle cell disease. In Kenya, 80% of children with sickle cell die before they reach their second birthday. From Beyond the Skies is a remarkable story of love, courage, and new life found within the dark. It is an invitation to all who read it to do courageous things.

Book Whispers of Love in a Tearful World

Download or read book Whispers of Love in a Tearful World written by Nilayan Basu and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enjoy vivid descriptions of nature, and memories blended with imagination and imagery from the author's personal photo collections in this fanciful new short story collection! Some say that whenever we see or hear something, it is permanently etched in our brains. Sometimes memories return to haunt us, sometimes to amuse us, and sometimes to make us laugh. Sometimes what we see or hear appears in our dreams, obscured and blended with other memories or fantasies. Neuroscience is complex, and the wonders of the human mind are amazing. Nilayan Basu brings this concept to life in his new short story collection. In "Whispers of Love in Tearful World," the tales are imaginary but have distinct ties to real-world events. The natural tendency of the human spirit to seek peace forms the core of Nilayan's soothing, eloquent prose.
