Book Life Reimagined

Download or read book Life Reimagined written by Barbara Bradley Hagerty and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynamic and inspiring exploration of the new science that is redrawing the future for people in their forties, fifties, and sixties for the better—and for good. There’s no such thing as an inevitable midlife crisis, Barbara Bradley Hagerty writes in this provocative, hopeful book. It’s a myth, an illusion. New scientific research explodes the fable that midlife is a time when things start to go downhill for everybody. In fact, midlife can be a great new adventure, when you can embrace fresh possibilities, purposes, and pleasures. In Life Reimagined, Hagerty explains that midlife is about renewal: It’s the time to renegotiate your purpose, refocus your relationships, and transform the way you think about the world and yourself. Drawing from emerging information in neurology, psychology, biology, genetics, and sociology—as well as her own story of midlife transformation—Hagerty redraws the map for people in midlife and plots a new course forward in understanding our health, our relationships, even our futures.

Book Work Love and Learning in Utopia

Download or read book Work Love and Learning in Utopia written by Martin Schoenhals and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work, Love, and Learning in Utopiabreathes new life into the age-old human preoccupation with how to create a happier society. With a fascinating mix of research from cross-cultural psychology, macro history, and evolutionary biology, the book gives new credibility to the advocacy of radical equality. The author, a psychological anthropologist, argues that the negative emotions of sadness, anger, and fear evolved in tandem with hierarchy, while happiness evolved separately and in connection to prosociality and compassion. The book covers a wide range of human concerns, from economics and education, to media and communication, to gender and sexuality. It breaks new boundaries with its scope, arguing that equality of love is as important and possible as is economic equality. Its argument is provocative yet practical, and each chapter ends with concrete proposals that invite dialogue with any student of policy. Written in an easily accessible style, this book will appeal to anyone who has ever puzzled over how our social world could be remade. In particular, it will be very useful to students and scholars of anthropology, sociology, and psychology. /P> Written in an easily accessible style, this book will appeal to anyone who has ever puzzled over how our social world could be remade. Book Black Feminism Reimagined

Download or read book Black Feminism Reimagined written by Jennifer C. Nash and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black Feminism Reimagined Jennifer C. Nash reframes black feminism's engagement with intersectionality, often celebrated as its primary intellectual and political contribution to feminist theory. Charting the institutional history and contemporary uses of intersectionality in the academy, Nash outlines how women's studies has both elevated intersectionality to the discipline's primary program-building initiative and cast intersectionality as a threat to feminism's coherence. As intersectionality has become a central feminist preoccupation, Nash argues that black feminism has been marked by a single affect—defensiveness—manifested by efforts to police intersectionality's usages and circulations. Nash contends that only by letting go of this deeply alluring protectionist stance, the desire to make property of knowledge, can black feminists reimagine intellectual production in ways that unleash black feminist theory's visionary world-making possibilities.

Book excerpt: The Award-Winning Book Returns - Updated, Revised and Expanded! The mutual love affair between people and their place is one of the most powerful influences in our lives, yet rarely thought of in terms of a relationship. As cities come to think of themselves as engaged in a relationship with their residents, and residents begin to consider their emotional connections with their places, we open up new possibilities in community, social and economic development by including the most powerful of motivators - the human heart - in our toolkit of place-making. Here we will explore what makes cities lovable, what motivates ordinary people to do extraordinary things for their places and how some cities are using that energy to fill in the gaps that "official" city makers have left as resources disappeared. Meet the amazing people who are truly in love with their cities and learn how they are the key resource to the future development of our communities. "Peter's book takes the age old notion that love is a powerful, but intangible force and completely turns it on its head by uniquely illustrating the impact human emotion can have on our cities. I strongly recommend For the Love of Cities to all local leaders and anyone who is looking for creative solutions to the challenges facing America's cities." Buddy Dyer, Mayor of Orlando, Florida "When it comes to making places better, there are so many things we can do beyond those conventionally labeled as 'planning.' Most of them involve not the hardware of cities but the software - people. And the best of them are on display in this remarkable book." Jeff Speck, AICP, author of Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America One Step at a Time "In this book, Peter goes 'next level' and shows us HOW and WHY our placemaking process can help residents and visitors fall in love with your city all over again. This book is for activists, engineers, planners and community leaders committed to transforming their communities." Rebecca Ryan, APF - Futurists/Economist, NEXT Generation Consulting "The book is a love note from Author Peter Kageyama to cities everywhere that will prompt you to more closely examine your own relationship with where you live, work and play." Diane Egner Publisher and Managing Editor, 83 Degrees Media Former Book Editor, The Tampa Tribune "What Kageyama has done is to introduce the vital piece into the urban discussion- the matter of love; the piece without which all city building must fail, for "love" the corner stone of civic citizenship. It takes some bravura and acumen to champion the subject of love in the urban forum that wants to quantify, when only love qualifies and justifies the discussion of cities. Mr. Kageyama goes one step further. He provides precious indicators. Many city thinkers will follow suit, but for the time being, this is the essential book." Pier Giorgio Di Cicco Poet Laureate Emeritus, Toronto, Ontario Author of Municipal Mind: Manifestos for The Creative City

Book Queer Opera

  • Author : Andrew Sutherland
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield

  • ISBN : 1666906085
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Queer Opera written by Andrew Sutherland and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Queer Opera, Andrew Sutherland argues that operas often reflect characteristics of the society and epistime in which they are written but that they also do much more than that; operas have agency. LGBTQ+ social, cultural, and political issues have become an increasingly defining feature of twenty-first century life, and as agency for change, composers have turned to opera to underscore the lived queer experience. Sutherland posits that operas written before the sexual revolution of the mid-twentieth century utilized a codified language both in the libretto and score, communicating with those observers open to a queer reading. He explores the growing trend of local, small-scale, independent opera companies seen around the world towards the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century and argues that this has emboldened queer artists to reclaim opera as a queer space. He further argues that for several centuries, opera houses have been safe havens for queer composers, librettists, performers, and designers, and yet it is only relatively recently that any serious attempt at queer representation in operatic works has begun to be realized. In this book, he examines narratives and music of selected operas to walk through queer history in Western societies and shines a light on how many of opera’s well-known characters, based on historical figures who represent pivotal moments in the queer story, are responsible in a variety of ways for the continued struggle for queer acceptance.

If you are already a fan of the Love in Bloom big-family romance collection, you may have read Treat and Max's original story, Lovers at Heart. For the past several years, I have had the nagging feeling that there was more to Treat and Max's story than I had originally thought. One of the greatest things about being a writer is the ability to reimagine worlds and create new stories. I wanted to give Treat and Max a more mature story without losing the essence of who they are. This is Treat and Max's story, reimagined, and I hope you love it as much as I do. In LOVERS AT HEART, REIMAGINED...Treat Braden wasn't looking for love when Max Armstrong walked into his Nassau resort, but he saw right through the efficient and capable facade she wore like a shield to the sweet, sensual woman beneath. One magnificent evening together sparked an intense connection, and for the first time in his life Treat wanted more than a casual affair. But something caused Max to turn away, and now, after weeks of unanswered phone calls and longing for the one woman he cannot have, Treat is going back to his family's ranch to try to finally move on. Book Whatever Love Is Love

Download or read book Whatever Love Is Love written by Maria Bello and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed actress and dedicated activist shares her personal journey of discovery, and destroys outdated ideas about partnership, love and family that will resonate with anyone in an unconventional life situation. Actress and activist Maria Bello made waves with her essay, “Coming Out as a Modern Family,” in the New York Times popular “Modern Love” column, in which she recalled telling her son that she had fallen in love with her best friend, a woman—and her relief at his easy and immediate acceptance with the phrase “Whatever Mom, love is love.” She made a compelling argument about the fluidity of partnerships, and how families today come in a myriad of designs. In her first book, Bello broadens her insights as she examines the idea of partnership in every woman’s life, and her own. She examines the myths that so many of us believe about partnership—that the partnership begins when the sex begins, that partnerships are static, that you have to love yourself before you can be loved, and turns them on their heads. Bello explores how many different relationships—romantic, platonic, spiritual, familial, educational—helped define her life. She encourages women to realize that the only labels we have are the ones we put on ourselves, and the best, happiest partnerships are the ones that make your life better, even if they don’t fit the mold of “typical.” Throughout this powerful and engaging read, Bello shares intimate stories and lessons on how she has come to discover her happiest self, accept who she is, and live honestly and freely, and tells the stories of those who came to her after her Times’ columns, grateful that someone gave voice to their life choices. Whatever...Love Is Love is not a memoir about an actress. It is a frank, raw, and honest book about the way every woman questions the roles she plays in love, work, and life, filled with wisdom, questions, and insights relevant to us all.
