Returning from leave Harry confronts a burly Sergeant auctioning off a tin of very intimate love-letters and photographs found in a shelled dug-out. Trying to protect the privacy of those letters, Harry buys them himself. A simple act of decency that is to have a lifetime of consequence. Annie is the nurse in the photographs. A former volunteer from New England with her doctor husband on a Harvard Medical Unit, she has ended up a widow on an ambulance train serving the Western Front. We are two strangers who meet in hell, she writes to Harry when he finally tracks her down. We come from two different worlds and have no mutual friends. Why should we hide anything from one another? Book Love Of An Unknown Soldier Found In A Dug Out Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Love Of An Unknown Soldier Found In A Dug Out Illustrated Edition written by Anonymous and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the First World War Illustrations Pack – 73 battle plans and diagrams and 198 photos ‘I think of you, as I shall think of you to the end, if the end comes. I do not want you less. I want you more perhaps, only not so selfishly. I realize that death does not finish all things. Love lives on. There are other worlds—there must be so many other worlds—in which I shall surely meet you if I miss you in this one. That I, so poor and human and puny, should be capable of this largeness of spirit, gives me confidence that God’s scheme for us must be greater than we have guessed. He cannot be smaller than the souls He has created. You may not need me in this existence. We may have met too late to be much to each other. But I cannot think love is wasted.’ The Love of an Unknown Soldier collects the intimate letters written by an anonymous World War I officer in Paris to his American love. Found by a young British soldier at the end of the war, the documents had been wedged in the wall of an abandoned gun dug-out, secreted away, and never mailed by the original author. There was no indication of the name or unit of the writer, presumed dead, nor did he mention the name of the girl he loved so dearly. Since tracing the letters’ owner proved impossible, the young officer sent them to the publisher John Lane in an attempt to bring the letters to the attention of the American woman for whom the letters were written. The lady was never found, however, and the romantic soldier remains a mystery today. First published in 1916, this touching correspondence provides a clear depiction of the emotional realities and devastation of war.’- Print ed.

The 21 year-old shepherd from the border hills is already one of the 'veterans' of the Somme battlefield. Returning from leave Harry confronts a burly Sergeant auctioning off a tin of very intimate love-letters and photographs found in a shelled dug-out. Trying to protect the privacy of those letters, Harry buys them himself. A simple act of decency that is to have a lifetime of consequence. Encouraged by two of his young officers, Harry eventually finds the girl in the photographs, the intended recipient of those passionate love-letters. Annie is a nurse from New England, former volunteer with her doctor husband on a Harvard Medical Unit, she has ended up a widow on an ambulance train serving the Western Front. We are two strangers who meet in hell, she writes to Harry. We come from two different worlds and have no mutual friends. Why should we hide anything from one another? They do not hide - and with the help and at times envy of the young officers, their passion unfolds while both their worlds prepare for that worst of all battles which comes to be known as Passchendaele. During the first days of battle, Harry's Company is pinned down in no man's land. When finally they return with only half their numbers, Harry's childhood friend, Frank, suffering from shell-shock, is arrested for cowardice, court-martialled and executed. Harry hunts down the NCO who effected the arrest - and kills him. He's never accused of the crime, but this also will have a lifetime of consequence for him. Not long after, Harry himself is shot by a sniper and wounded near to death. The two young officers, 'Bunny' and Ordish, remain his friends; the matron on the ambulance train, 'Virgin' Mary, becomes Annie's confidante - while throughout the grim trench battles of 1918, on the line, behind the line, in Flanders and in Picardy, on the Italian front and back in Blighty, Harry and Annie try to keep their love alive, all logic and circumstance against them........

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love of an Unknown Soldier: Found in a Dug Out The publication of documents as intimate as those printed in this little volume requires some explanation and apology, but I venture to thick that my reasons will be found sufficient. The Ms. was submitted to me by a young officer of the R.F.A., home from the front on leave, who had just read "The Ms. in the Red Box," which circumstance he admitted had decided him to consult me. He explained that he had brought with him from France a bundle of papers which he had found in one of the dug-outs of an abandoned gun position. To use his own words: "The position was in a hell of a mess." It had been badly knocked about by enemy bombardments and had obviously been rendered untenable. Book Twenty One Steps Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Download or read book Twenty One Steps Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier written by Jeff Gottesfeld and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With every step, the Tomb Guards pay homage to America’s fallen. Discover their story, and that of the unknown soldiers they honor, through resonant words and illustrations. Keeping vigil at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Arlington National Cemetery, are the sentinel guards, whose every step, every turn, honors and remembers America’s fallen. They protect fellow soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, making sure they are never alone. To stand there—with absolute precision, in every type of weather, at every moment of the day, one in a line uninterrupted since midnight July 2, 1937—is the ultimate privilege and the most difficult post to earn in the army. Everything these men and women do is in service to the Unknowns. Their standard is perfection. Exactly how the unnamed men came to be entombed at Arlington, and exactly how their fellow soldiers have come to keep vigil over them, is a sobering and powerful tale, told by Jeff Gottesfeld and luminously illustrated by Matt Tavares—a tale that honors the soldiers who honor the fallen.
