Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A-ways back, back beyond the early 1960s I wrote some rhymed lyrics for a few friends of my father, who used them for playing in their home bands. As time went on, I wrote more but didn't even think about putting these in a booklet or having any means of documenting their ownership. A few years later a shipmate of mine looked at and became interested in my few saved works. It was now in the end part of 1961 when I started haphazardly keeping a little book (attempting to keep a record) of some of my song lyrics, song poems, song ballads and even a few thoughts or ideas to be useable in movies or as concert fillers. I do NOT sing myself and as such never had the training to put my words to music vocally. Still my collections grew. Thus to interested and/or musical friends: "FOR YOU". Explore these lyrics to find something you would be willing to take a second long look at, with the hope or thought of being able to use it in your jam session or musicale. Please contact if you wish to use these lyrics.

Book excerpt: This is the fifth book in the series of poetry collections by this author, who was born in Trinidad, raised in Cayman Islands and became Canadian by choice a few years after his service at sea around the world. A sea mariner by nature, he worked the coastal waters of British Columbia, strolled the beaches for his peace of mind, drove through the feverish highways of Vancouver while raising his family on the outskirts of that city during his employment with BC Ferries. Now enjoying a well-earned retirement after more than 50 years of working, he wishes to share with you, his bits and pieces of thoughts that he accumulated over the course of his life. It is with pleasure that he presents to you this book of A Poet's Ebb and Flow with which he hopes that you will harvest a mental serenity and repose from the chaos of today's world.

Book Pessoa A Biography

Download or read book Pessoa A Biography written by Richard Zenith and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Richard Ellmann’s James Joyce, Richard Zenith’s Pessoa immortalizes the life of one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers. Nearly a century after his wrenching death, the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) remains one of our most enigmatic writers. Believing he could do “more in dreams than Napoleon,” yet haunted by the specter of hereditary madness, Pessoa invented dozens of alter egos, or “heteronyms,” under whose names he wrote in Portuguese, English, and French. Unsurprisingly, this “most multifarious of writers” (Guardian) has long eluded a definitive biographer—but in renowned translator and Pessoa scholar Richard Zenith, he has met his match. Relatively unknown in his lifetime, Pessoa was all but destined for literary oblivion when the arc of his afterlife bent, suddenly and improbably, toward greatness, with the discovery of some 25,000 unpublished papers left in a large, wooden trunk. Drawing on this vast archive of sources as well as on unpublished family letters, and skillfully setting the poet’s life against the nationalist currents of twentieth-century European history, Zenith at last reveals the true depths of Pessoa’s teeming imagination and literary genius. Much as Nobel laureate José Saramago brought a single heteronym to life in The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, Zenith traces the backstories of virtually all of Pessoa’s imagined personalities, demonstrating how they were projections, spin-offs, or metamorphoses of Pessoa himself. A solitary man who had only one, ultimately platonic love affair, Pessoa used his and his heteronyms’ writings to explore questions of sexuality, to obsessively search after spiritual truth, and to try to chart a way forward for a benighted and politically agitated Portugal. Although he preferred the world of his mind, Pessoa was nonetheless a man of the places he inhabited, including not only Lisbon but also turn-of-the-century Durban, South Africa, where he spent nine years as a child. Zenith re-creates the drama of Pessoa’s adolescence—when the first heteronyms emerged—and his bumbling attempts to survive as a translator and publisher. Zenith introduces us, too, to Pessoa’s bohemian circle of friends, and to Ophelia Quieroz, with whom he exchanged numerous love letters. Pessoa reveals in equal force the poet’s unwavering commitment to defending homosexual writers whose books had been banned, as well as his courageous opposition to Salazar, the Portuguese dictator, toward the end of his life. In stunning, magisterial prose, Zenith contextualizes Pessoa’s posthumous literary achievements—especially his most renowned work, The Book of Disquiet. A modern literary masterpiece, Pessoa simultaneously immortalizes the life of a literary maestro and confirms the enduring power of Pessoa’s work to speak prophetically to the disconnectedness of our modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intoxicating blend of fantasy, horror, and romance--a Faustian fable perfect for fans of Holly Black, and Stranger Things. Dee Moreno is out of options. Her home life sucks (to put it mildly), and she's about to get booted from her boarding school--the only place she's ever felt free--for lack of funds. But this is a world where demons exist, and the demons are there to make deals: one human body part in exchange for one wish come true. The demon who Dee approaches doesn't trade in the usual arms and legs, however. He's only interested in her heart. And what comes after Dee makes her deal is a nightmare far bigger, far more monstrous than anything she ever could have imagined. Reality is turned on its head, and Dee has only her fellow "heartless," the charming but secretive James Lancer, to keep her grounded. As something like love grows between them amid an otherworldly threat, Dee begins to wonder: Can she give James her heart when it's no longer hers to give? In The Hearts We Sold, demons can be outwitted, hearts can be reclaimed, monsters can be fought, and love isn't impossible. This book will steal your heart and break it, and leave you begging for more.
