Book excerpt: Souichiro Hino's mother may be a world famous psychic, but she sure has trouble keeping track of everyday details. For example, that 'wonderful' new school she sent him to was embroiled in a string of grisly murders. All of the victims were male students like Souichiro. Nor did she mention that fellow psychic and childhood friend, Itsuki Aoyama, attended the school and was expecting him to do something about all of that. And then there was Itsuki's Love Club, also known as the Ghostbusters. Somehow, his friend had gotten it into his head that a random group of kids – and one friendly spirit of a dead honor student – could take on and defeat The Seven Mysteries of Seika Academy, which actually numbered ten or more. Souichiro didn't have time to object. There was a killer Sakura tree in the garden and a portal to hell in the Emergency Stairwell. If all of this wasn't bad enough, there was that 'connection' between him and Itsuki. They hadn't seen each other for years, yet everyone treated them like a couple! Souko Hino sure had a lot of explaining to do!

Book The Monday Rhetoric of the Love Club and Other Parables

Download or read book The Monday Rhetoric of the Love Club and Other Parables written by Marvin Cohen and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1973 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Marvin Cohen's wacky humor," the late Thomas Merton once said, "has something of 'Thurber, something of Steinberg, Buster Keaton, the surrealists, the French pataphysicians." And this in itself is a fair enough assessment, to say the very least, of The Monday Rhetoric of the Love Club, a collection of twenty-one of the prolific Cohen's parables, prose poems, fables, and dialogues. Two of the pieces, including the title story, originally appeared in the New Directions in Prose and Poetry series; most of the others were selected from the many other magazines and anthologies in England and the United States in which Cohen's shorter works have been published.

Book Love Is Powerful

Download or read book Love Is Powerful written by Heather Dean Brewer and published by Candlewick. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A little girl carries a big message—and finds it thrillingly amplified by the rallying crowd around her—in an empowering story for the youngest of activists. Mari raised her sign for everyone to see. Even though she was small and the crowd was very big, and she didn’t think anyone would hear, she yelled out. Mari is getting ready to make a sign with crayon as the streets below her fill up with people. “What are we making, Mama?” she asks. “A message for the world,” Mama says. “How will the whole world hear?” Mari wonders. “They’ll hear,” says Mama, “because love is powerful.” Inspired by a girl who participated in the January 2017 Women’s March in New York City, Heather Dean Brewer’s simple and uplifting story, delightfully illustrated by LeUyen Pham, is a reminder of what young people can do to promote change and equality at a time when our country is divided by politics, race, gender, and religion.

The great scholar, W. E. B. Du Bois, once wrote about the Problem of race in America, and what he called “Double Consciousness,” a sensitivity that every African American possesses in order to survive. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood Du Bois’s words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans—the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother Pearl, the descendant of enslaved Georgians and tenant farmers—Ailey carries Du Bois’s Problem on her shoulders. Ailey is reared in the north in the City but spends summers in the small Georgia town of Chicasetta, where her mother’s family has lived since their ancestors arrived from Africa in bondage. From an early age, Ailey fights a battle for belonging that’s made all the more difficult by a hovering trauma, as well as the whispers of women—her mother, Belle, her sister, Lydia, and a maternal line reaching back two centuries—that urge Ailey to succeed in their stead. To come to terms with her own identity, Ailey embarks on a journey through her family’s past, uncovering the shocking tales of generations of ancestors—Indigenous, Black, and white—in the deep South. In doing so Ailey must learn to embrace her full heritage, a legacy of oppression and resistance, bondage and independence, cruelty and resilience that is the story—and the song—of America itself.

Download or read book Unfaithful written by Carol Faulkner and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her 1855 fictionalized autobiography, Mary Gove Nichols told the story of her emancipation from her first unhappy marriage, during which her husband controlled her body, her labor, and her daughter. Rather than the more familiar metaphor of prostitution, Nichols used adultery to define loveless marriages as a betrayal of the self, a consequence far more serious than the violation of a legal contract. Nichols was not alone. In Unfaithful, Carol Faulkner places this view of adultery at the center of nineteenth-century efforts to redefine marriage as a voluntary relationship in which love alone determined fidelity. After the Revolution, Americans understood adultery as a sin against God and a crime against the people. A betrayal of marriage vows, adultery was a cause for divorce in most states as well as a basis for civil suits. Faulkner depicts an array of nineteenth-century social reformers who challenged the restrictive legal institution of marriage, redefining adultery as a matter of individual choice and love. She traces the beginning of this redefinition of adultery to the evangelical ferment of the 1830s and 1840s, when perfectionists like John Humphrey Noyes, founder of the Oneida Community, concluded that marriage obstructed the individual's relationship to God. In the 1840s and 1850s, spiritualist, feminist, and free love critics of marriage fueled a growing debate over adultery and marriage by emphasizing true love and consent. After the Civil War, activists turned the act of adultery into a form of civil disobedience, culminating in Victoria Woodhull's publicly charging the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher with marital infidelity. Unfaithful explores how nineteenth-century reformers mobilized both the metaphor and the act of adultery to redefine marriage between 1830 and 1880 and the ways in which their criticisms of the legal institution contributed to a larger transformation of marital and gender relations that continues to this day.
