Book excerpt: Excerpt from Love at Seventy After giving you stories in which the scenes are located largely in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Mexico, it seems only right to return to the United States and write one in which nearly every incident takes place on American soil. It is true that Roland Linnette tells of some of his experiences abroad, in one or two chapters but both he, and his dear old uncle, who furnishes my title, his friend Dalton, Eva Warren, Maud Arline and Tom Hobbs are essentially home products. Book Love and Women in Early Chinese Fiction

Download or read book Love and Women in Early Chinese Fiction written by Daniel Hsieh and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In traditional China, upper-class literati were inevitably strongly influenced by Confucian doctrine and rarely touched upon such topics as love and women in their writings. It was not until the mid-Tang, a generation or two after the An Lushan rebellion, that literary circles began to engage in overt discussion of the issues of love and women, through the use of the newly emerging genres of zhiguai and chuanqi fiction. The debate was carried out with an unprecedented enthusiasm, since the topics were considered to be the key to understanding the crisis in Chinese civilization. This book examines the repertoire of chuanqi and zhiguai written during the Six Dynasties and Tang periods and analyzes the key themes, topics, and approaches found in these tales, which range from expressions of male fantasy, sympathy, fear, and anxiety, to philosophical debate on the place of the feminine in patriarchal Chinese society. Many of these stories reflect tensions between masculine and feminine aspects of civilization as seen, for example, in the conflict of male aspiration and female desire, as well as the ultimate longing for reconciliation of these divisions. These stories form a crucial chapter in the history of love in China and would provide much of the foundation for further explorations during the late imperial period, as seen in seminal works such as The Peony Pavilion and Dream of the Red Chamber.

Book I m Too Young To Be Seventy

Download or read book I m Too Young To Be Seventy written by Judith Viorst and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beloved author of Forever Fifty and Suddenly Sixty tackles the ins and outs of becoming a septuagenarian with wry good humor. Fans of Viorst’s funny, touching, and wise decades poems will love these verses filled with witty advice and reflections on marriage, milestones, and middle-aged children. Viorst explores, among the many other issues of this stage of life, the state of our sex lives and teeth, how we can stay married though thermostatically incompatible, and the joys of grandparenthood and shopping. Readers will nod with rueful recognition when she asks, “Am I required to think of myself as a basically shallow woman because I feel better when my hair looks good?,” when she presses a few helpful suggestions on her kids because “they may be middle aged, but they’re still my children,” and when she graciously—but not too graciously—selects her husband’s next mate in a poem deliciously subtitled “If I Should Die Before I Wake, Here’s the Wife You Next Should Take.” Though Viorst acknowledges she is definitely not a good sport about the fact that she is mortal, her poems are full of the pleasures of life right now, helping us come to terms with the passage of time, encouraging us to keep trying to fix the world, and inviting us to consider “drinking wine, making love, laughing hard, caring hard, and learning a new trick or two as part of our job description at seventy.” I'm Too Young to Be Seventy is a joy to read and makes a heartwarming gift for anyone who has reached or is soon to reach that—it’s not so bad after all—seventh decade.

Arthur Waley is the most famous Sinologist who has done most in bringing Chinese poetry to the fore of Western public. Hence, no matter what, Waley's historical importance cannot be overestimated. And he is a competent all-round translator too, as this fine anthology demonstrates, one who has an uncanny ear of transforming Chinese rhythms and rhymes into naturalized English metrics. First published in 1919, this is the book that first alerted the West to the richness and variety of Chinese literature. Arthur Waley (1889-1966), a shy reclusive scholar, was one of the earliest champions of Asian literature in the English-speaking world. A Hundred and Seventy Chinese Poems has often been cited as an outstanding source for those who enjoy Chinese Poetry.

Book 60 Handel Overtures Arranged for Solo Keyboard

Download or read book 60 Handel Overtures Arranged for Solo Keyboard written by George Frideric Handel and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic overture had its beginnings in Renaissance court entertainments, which often began with a flourish of trumpets. It reached a high point of inspiration in the overtures that George Frideric Handel (1685 1759) composed for his operas and oratorios. This volume presents 60 Handel overtures and sinfonias, originally scored for orchestra, superbly arranged for solo keyboard. They have been reprinted from an extremely rare edition originally printed, probably in the 1750s, by Handel's London publisher, John Walsh. Happily, these brilliant works have lost nothing in translation of their Handelian vitality and interest. Many of them, such as the overtures to "Messiah, Acis and Galatea, Alexander s Feast, Julius Caesar, "the second overture in "Solomon" (known as the "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba"), and the so-called Water Musick, are very familiar to music lovers. Some will be fresh discoveries for keyboard players. Together they demonstrate Handel s exciting theatrical sense, his technical virtuosity in composition, and his dazzling mastery of musical forms, which he often combined into his own unique creations. This edition preserves the original keyboard notation, amazingly precise in its elegant execution and, of course, entirely legible to present-day performers."
