Book Love a Poetic Photographic Journey Through Time

Download or read book Love a Poetic Photographic Journey Through Time written by Don Wilhour and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-04 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love.A Poetic, Photographic Journey Through Time Is just as it's name suggests....a compilation of poems written from 1970 through 2005 combined with nature photographs taken during many trips across this great country of ours and a few computer creations. The first poem, "How Can I Be Sure", written in 1970 is the only work that survived my memory because all early works were destroyed in an apartment fire in 1975. The second, "Ode To A Friend", was written in 1992 as a tribute to the tragic death of a friend of mine. All the rest were written between 2002 and 2005 and depict moving feelings of love and love lost during the ups and downs of a post divorce relationship. The nature photos were taken at a variety of places like National Parks, State Parks in Pennsylvania and New York, at the shore on the east coast, and on a cross country trip that my son and I took after his graduation in 2002. Most of the photos came from the 19 National Parks that we visited and other outstanding sites along our journey which included a breathtaking drive along U.S. rt.1 down the California coast. Lastly, there are three of my favorite computer creations included, "The Black Hole", "Mirror Balls", and "Blue Serenity", which I designed during the evening hours of that snowbound winter of '95-'96.

Download or read book Loving written by Hugh Nini and published by 5 Continents Editions. This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loving: A Photographic Story of Men in Love, 1850-1950 portrays the history of romantic love between men in hundreds of moving and tender vernacular photographs taken between the years 1850 and 1950. This visual narrative of astonishing sensitivity brings to light an until-now-unpublished collection of hundreds of snapshots, portraits, and group photos taken in the most varied of contexts, both private and public. Taken when male partnerships were often illegal, the photos here were found at flea markets, in shoe boxes, family archives, old suitcases, and later online and at auctions. The collection now includes photos from all over the world: Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Japan, Greece, Latvia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Serbia. The subjects were identified as couples by that unmistakable look in the eyes of two people in love - impossible to manufacture or hide. They were also recognized by body language - evidence as subtle as one hand barely grazing another - and by inscriptions, often coded. Included here are ambrotypes, daguerreotypes, glass negatives, tin types, cabinet cards, photo postcards, photo strips, photomatics, and snapshots - over 100 years of social history and the development of photography. Loving will be produced to the highest standards in illustrated book publishing, The photographs - many fragile from age or handling - have been digitized using a technology derived from that used on surveillance satellites and available in only five places around the world. Paper and other materials are among the best available. And Loving will be manufactured at one of the world's elite printers. Loving, the book, will be up to the measure of its message in every way. In these delight-filled pages, couples in love tell their own story for the first time at a time when joy and hope - indeed human connectivity - are crucial lifelines to our better selves. Universal in reach and overwhelming in impact, Loving speaks to our spirit and resilience, our capacity for bliss, and our longing for the shared truths of love.

Book excerpt: This book powerfully captures the complexities of what it has meant for an urban, educated, intelligent and sensitive African American woman to come of age in the 1970's and 1980's. It is refreshing that someone of Iverem's breadth, insight and love of words has provided a poetic document of life for an as yet unlabeled, unchronicled group--those of us a shade too young to have been 1960's black power nationalists and a shade too old to be 1990's post-soul searchers.

Book Heaven is a Photograph

Download or read book Heaven is a Photograph written by Christine Sloan Stoddard and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This girl is hungry for the weight of a camera in her hands, but that desire feels wicked. Is it because her father is a war photographer and photography has always been his domain? Or is it because she's yet to become a woman who chases what she wants? And who's to say photography can't be her domain, too? At least she knows this: Salvation lies in pixels. Heaven is a photograph. This collection of narrative poems and photographs tells the story of an art student and her journey of doubt, longing, and questioning. Join her as she finds her power behind the lens. "With Heaven is a Photograph, Christine Sloan Stoddard presents you with a poetic meditation on the fear and desire of making images (and claiming one's power). Intellectually and spiritually rich, her words and images imprint on your mind and heart with beauty, honesty and recognition." -Art Jones, artist and filmmaker "Heaven is a Photograph is a living hagiography of a girl who cannot decide whether or not pursuing photography is a sin. Conflicted by gender expectations and the uncertainty of a career in the arts, the one thing that the protagonist knows is that photography is a deeply spiritual practice, enveloping her life. It is truly an autobiography of many women in the arts." -Gretchen Gales, executive editor of Quail Bell Magazine, as seen in Ms. Magazine, The Mighty, and Roar Feminist Magazine "Heaven is a Photograph is a unique exploration of poetry and photography you'll only experience through Christine Sloan Stoddard's magic. The power of her words will shake the core of your being. She doesn't just take pictures-she gives them." -Ghia Vitale, senior editor of Quail Bell Magazine, as seen in Everyday Feminism, xoJane, and BUST "Heaven is a Photograph puts the reader behind, in front of, and inside the camera through Christine Sloan Stoddard's evocative poetry and photography. Through the lens of her viewpoint character, the collection demonstrates the personal and universal appeal of photography in a vivid and impactful manner. Stoddard describes the art of photography as it relates to memory, creation, and legacy in a way that makes the act of clicking the shutter button both an artistic and a spiritual act." -Alex Carrigan, senior critic at Quail Bell Magazine "The narrator of Christine Stoddard's Heaven is a Photograph is hungry. For art. For success. For salvation. For the weight of a camera in her hands. She laments that photography is slow to love her back, which is perhaps what makes this collection so intoxicating. The unchecked, sometimes fearful and unabashedly female desire of a woman who cannot contain her passion-who would let it consume her-explodes in words and images." -Mari Pack, author of Description of a New World (dancing girl press)

Taking time as an overarching structure—specifically, the twelve months of the year—Dimitrov elevates the everyday, and speaks directly to the reader as if the poem were a phone call or a text message. From the personal to the cosmos, the moon to New York City, the speaker is convinced that love is “our best invention.” Dimitrov doesn’t resist joy, even in despair. These poems are curious about who we are as people and shamelessly interested in hope.

Book excerpt: Now in paperback! Over 370 pages of black and white photographyAn Amazing Journey Through Photography and the Written WordFrom the introduction to Everyday... "This book is my Peter Pan moment of infinite discovery. I want each page of everyday to be viewed as a visual poem; sometimes the pages may feel crowded, other times, sparse." Everyday is a concise photo layout of that particular day in time, complete with inspirational or thought provoking words, and is the original creation of Jay Desind, poet, photographer and bestselling author of the memoir, Lost in Language. The photography was all created with the iPhone and edited on the iPhone. Join Jay as he travels across two continents and through various countries. A Facebook favorite, Jay shares his intimate journey of photography in a unique almanac that reads like a photo essay.Q&A With Jay DesindQ.What led to the creation of Everday? A. Everyday came about as a very organic process. For the last several years I have been fortunate to travel to many places in the world. I love sharing my photos on social media, but I wanted to create something that more mirrored my journey. I didn't want Everyday to be a travelogue-he went here, here, here. I wanted it to more intimate and more a reflection of the reasons why one holds up a camera and takes a picture. That's why the accompanying text is a very integral piece of this journey.Q.Is all the writing in Everyday your own? A. Yes, for the most part it is. In the very beginning of this journey, I began to use the iPhone as my main camera. I liked the immediacy of it. I also discovered it was a great way to take notes on the places I went to, and in short order I began to express the feelings of these places-and my own-through poetry. The iPhone made it easy. If you ever see me walking down the street tapping away into my phone, it's a pretty good chance I have just taken a picture and am writing a poem about it! There are some days in Everyday that a photo of mine brought for me a different experience and led me to accompany it with a quote from somewhere else, or in some cases song lyrics.Q.What places did you travel to that Everyday covers? A. Everyday is all 365 days of 2013. I present it in almanac form, so we start that year in Barcelona, Spain and end in Bilbao, Spain. Spain has become a favorite place of me and Roberto to spend the first of the year at! Sandwiched in between are visits back to the United States-California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, and New York City. A great deal of the book takes place in Italy, with a couple side trips to Norway and Denmark. There are a few instances where a photo layout is from the previous year, 2012. My intent was to share photos taken on the specific calendar day of my journey, so it was necessary to delve back to a different year to share what I thought was an appropriate photo and story.Q. How would you describe Everyday in an elevator? A. Oh, boy. Will, I would say first, 'Run for your lives!' But being in a elevator it would be more appropriate to say, 'Stop pushing all the buttons, you're not going to escape any sooner!' I guess I would say that Everyday is not a typical 365 day journal or almanac of photos filled with inspirational quotes and recipes for brownies. Everyday has very few photos that are sweeping vistas of foreign places. Rather, it is a map of myself and an honest intimate expression of how my travels affected me in that time. I think of it as a visual memoir. I've peopled it with captures of strangers, but in a way these brief encounters felt more like chance discoveries of new friends. I want readers to linger over the pages and not view Everyday as a whole. . Above all, I want people to see themselves in some of these pages and I want them to learn things like I've learned though my travels
