Book The Oral Style South African Short Story in English

Download or read book The Oral Style South African Short Story in English written by Craig MacKenzie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with a particular kind of short story in South African English literature - a kind of story variously called the fireside tale, tall tale, skaz narrative or (the term used here) the 'oral-style' story. Most famously exemplified in the Oom Schalk Lourens narratives of Herman Charles Bosman, the oral-style story has its roots in the hunting tale and camp-fire yarn of the nineteenth century and has dozens of exponents in South African literature, most of them long forgotten. Here this neglect has been addressed. A.W. Drayson's Tales at the Outspan (1862) provides a point of departure, and is followed by discussions of works by William Charles Scully, Percy FitzPatrick, Ernest Glanville, Perceval Gibbon, Francis Carey Slater, Pauline Smith, and Aegidius Jean Blignaut, all of whom used the oral-style story genre. In the work of Herman Charles Bosman, however, the South African oral-style story comes into its own. In his Oom Schalk Lourens figure is invested all of the complexity and 'double-voicedness' that was latent - and largely dormant - in the earlier works. Bosman demonstrates his sophistication particularly in his metafictional use of the oral-style story. The study concludes with a discussion of the use of oral forms in the work of more recent black writers - among them Bessie Head, Mtutuzeli Matshoba, and Njabulo Ndebele.

Called to the scene, Sergeant Jackie Rose asks herself whether this was a drug murder, or something else. But before her investigation can get under way, she is ordered to hand the case over to the Australian Federal Police. Cape Town, South Africa: A local girl recruited to study in Australia has fallen off the radar. Veteran detective Schalk Lourens - recently suspended from duty - has already made plans to visit his daughter in Sydney, with emigration in mind. He decides to search for the missing girl while he is there. Jackie and Schalk join forces, exposing a trail of corruption and crime stretching from the foreshore of the city's iconic harbour, back to South Africa and across the world. Together the pair must navigate a minefield of deceit and manipulation set by an enemy more powerful and depraved than they can imagine. And failure isn'tan option, because not only their own futures, but those of hundreds of vulnerable young people, hang in the balance. PRAISE FOR SHADOW CITY: 'Shadow City is tense, gritty and insightful. Natalie Conyer pulls you into a chilling world where even the truth can be fatal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People involved in business at all levels have time constraints. They are bombarded with data: electronic, printed word and voice, much of it unnecessary. They need to find time to continue their education, particularly in their chosen business fields. There is so much to read and so little time and often little to capture the imagination. This book The Halo and the Noose is a very different type of business book. It covers the necessary theoretical aspects of business management, but the story telling captivates one. We remember stories from childhood and some of the better fiction read in later years. The 100 stories and poems in The Halo and the Noose enchant and educate and will do for many years whilst we remain in harness. If you have taken very few memories away from this wonderful book, that of Nasrudin's Donkey is worthwhile relating to your children, your students, colleagues and very definitely to your boss.
