Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 4: November-December, 1951 Contrary to the memorable comment of Mark Twain that everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it, Commissioner Ernest S. Cle ments, of the Louisiana department of Wild Life and Fisheries, has done some thing about it, and has tried to do more. Fixing the hunting seasons for Louisi ana's various types of nimrods is at best a thankless job, and Commissioner Clements has sincerely tried each year to set the hunting season dates to satisfy the greatest number of hunters in all parts of the state, while, at the same time, keeping in mind the great need for game conservation. That he has not been able to please every one was to be expected, and that there would be recriminations was a certainty, but he was resigned to those eventualities. This book was released on 2019-02-16 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservation Review, Vol. 4: July, 1934 The rattles of Rattlesnakes are structures unique in the animal world. Many snakes, even the harmless species such as the Hog-nosed Snake (called popularly the Spreading Adder or Puff Adder) possess the habit Of rapidly vibrating their tails when excited. If the snake happens to lie coiled among dried leaves, the resulting sound may closely resemble that of a rattle. Snakes Shed their skins at varying intervals and the formation Of the rattlesnake's rattle is Simply the result of the fact that, in each successive molting, a peculiar interlocking button is formed and re mains on the snake's tail. _the popular idea that the number of buttons in a rattle indicates the snake's age, is completely wrong. It is simply another example Of a very general and very good idea, one of those many good ideas with which the only trouble is that they are not true. The Shedding Of the snake's Skin depends upon many variable factors, amount of food, rate Of growth, temperature, etc. Furthermore, the wear and tear to which the snake's activities expose the rattle, cause the abrasion and breaking Off Of variable numbers of the buttons. The number of buttons, thus, if all were retained, would be Sim ply the record Of the number of times the snake has molted, and this might well have no constant relation with age. When, further, the buttons may be destroyed by wear or by accident, the number Of rattles present comes to mean exactly nothing. There is a popular idea, that a rattler cannot rattle while its rattle is wet. The writer has experimentally and readily disproved this many times, by the simple Operation Of turning water on a caged and angry four and one-half foot Timber Rattler. Wetting the rattles changed the sound, producing a Slightly muffled rattle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Louisiana Conservationist Vol 4 written by Mel Washburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 4: March 1952 If there are not enough grasses in the community, the soil loses its ability to take up and hold moisture: It may become eroded and lose its power to produce corn for hogs. If there are not enough earth worms, the same thing can happen. If there are not enough squirrels, there will be fewer acorns planted and in time there will be fewer oaks. If there are not enough cottontails' - _one of whose functions is to feed foxes - foxes may look to the farmer's poultry for food. On the other hand, if there are too few foxes to eat meadow mice, there may be so many meadow mice that there will be less alfalfa for dairy cows. If there are not enough songbirds, there may be too many destructive insects, resulting in a shortage of grain for beef cattle. But there must be useful insects to 'p01 linate alfalfa, red clover, and sweetclover, else these legumes will not produce seed. Thus we see that a successful farm com munity must have an abundance of useful wildlife and a low number' of harmful kinds. It must have what is called a favor able biologic balance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: May-June, 1958 Weep no more for the mourning dove at the hands of the hunter. Surveys by scientists have proven that regardless of what sportsmen may do, few doves live more than a year anyway and the hunter is responsible for less than 20 per cent of the annual dove mortality. These facts have been brought out by a cooperative dove study made by ten southern states and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife service. The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries com mission's pittman-robertson section, which is headed by John D. Newsom, coordinator, conducted the study in Louisi ana. The vast majority of doves are lost -to natural mortality which includes such things as starvation, mortality caused by adverse weather conditions, predation and disease. Few of the natural deaths of these birds are as quick and clean as death by the gun of the sportsman, Newsom says. The mourning dove, the commonest dove in Louisiana, is a game bird in this state and throughout the south; in other parts of the country it is classed as a songbird. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservation Review, Vol. 4: July 1935 Culturally, the tribes of Louisiana belong to the Eastern Maize Area, that portion of the eastern United States where agriculture takes its place with hunting, fishing, and the gathering of wild fruits as a source of subsistence. The tribes of this area may be classed as a semi-sedentary peo ple, dwelling in villages along waterways, raising crops in extensive fields, and making use of the wild foods offered in considerable abundance. The familiar tipi or cone-shaped dwelling was missing in Louisiana. Instead there were a num ber of kinds of semi-permanent houses. In the southern part of the State was the palmetto house, a thatching of leaves over a framework of poles, with a single entrance and a smoke hole through the roof. In the north were still more pretentious houses, with framework of posts and poles, both round and square at the base, with domed roofs, plastered over with mud, and covered with pal metto leaves or grass, and finally with mats. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 15: January-February, 1963 It is gratifying to me to note that in the past year there has been an obvious interest in grass roots conservation education and more public interest in the wildlife and fisheries resources of the state, their management, utilization, and perpetuation. This is not a sudden awakening on the part of the people of Louisiana. On the contrary, this growing interest can be interpreted as the result of a progressive campaign by the Louisiana Wild Life and Fisheries Commission to bring about an interest on the part of all the people in the state in these natural resources which mean so much to so many people. In making our plans for the months ahead, it would further the good which has already been accomplished for us to redouble our efforts so that this growing interest in Louisiana's wildlife and fisheries resources will be-passed along from person to person. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: April 1958 As strange as it may seem, frequently the reason for poor fishing in our fresh waters is too many fish. That is, the wrong kind of fish, with the most commonly too abundant species being the gizzard shad. Also occuring at times in. Large enough quantities to be a problem is the smaller relative of the gizzard shad, the threadfin shad. To a statement such as has been made above, the answer is usually given, how can you have too many fish? Well, it must be remembered that a body of water is capable of producing only a given amount of fish. This total production of the fish population is different for various bodies of water and is dependent upon the amount of basic nutrients which the body of water has available, indirectly, for the fish population. Therefore it follows that if a body of water can only produce so many fish and the more of these fish that are rough or trash fish then the smaller the amount of desirable fish which may be produced.
