Download or read book Louisiana Conservationist Vol 39 written by Louisiana Department Of Conservation and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 39: March/April, 1987 Fifty years ago, that's the way things were heading. These native American animals, and many others, were hanging on only in the most isolated places, their numbers and ranges drastically reduced after 300 years during which American settlers had harvested timber, drained marshes, and plowed and fenced the plains without much thought for the effects on wildlife. Many birds and animals had been decimated by years of uncontrolled hunting to supply commercial markets with fur and feathers, meat, and oil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 21: January-February 1969 There are many former roads such as this one that were inundated when the reservoir filled up. They now serve as excellent boat launching ramps and are heavily utilized by fishermen and boating fans. In an effort to create a better predator-prey relationship and fill an existing niche in Toledo Bend, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commis sion stocked walleye fingerlings in the spring of 1967. This stocking was followed by re leasing walleye fry in May, 1968. Walleye are excellent game fish which can attain a size up to fifteen pounds. They are also prized by anglers because of their excellent food value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 39 Yoy spotted seatrout show a similar pattern, the bay and peaking about one month after the start and peak of the spawning season, respectively. One-half to one inch specimens are first captured in early May and are continually taken throughout the spawning season. Yoy spotted seatrout are more widespread throughout the bay and are more abundant than red drum. The stations near the gulf harbor most of the spotted seatrout, but a few have been captured as far as 23 miles inland in Lake Salvador, which is essentially a freshwater area. Of the four years sampled, yoy spotted seatrout were most abundant in 1984 and 1986, with 1986 slightly higher. Since it takes about two years for a spotted seatrout to reach pound, the 1984 yoy year class would begin to appear in the 1986 recreational catch. From all reports, 1986 was a very good year for spotte seatrout fishing in Barataria Bay and all along the Louisiana coast. Yoy sampling in 1985 was disrupted by a number of hurricanes, but the moderate numbers of trout collected suggest that no drastic decline is immi nent. Combined with the excellent yoy sampling results in 1986, all indications point to a continued good trout harvest through 1987 and 1988. The marine laboratory's red drum and spotted sea trout yoy surveys are designed to provide an accurate barometer of these two species' respective year classes. By careful analysis of the yoy catch data and environ mental conditions, along with information gathered by the Seafood Division's Finfish Section, department scientists hope to be able to predict the relative abun dance of red drum and spotted seatrout in Barataria Bay for years to come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 39: January/February 1987 The factor that deals the death blow, Mead added, and one which we don't have any control over is an advanced case of shock. It causes internal contamination that can be lethal. Even an animal that appears healthy more than likely is suffering the effects of shock - some degree of blood poisoning by intestinal bacteria. When dealing with a whale as large as this, the logistics of proper treatment (dousing it with gallons of sun screen, moving it to a facility to monitor for at least 24 hours, and/ or injecting the marine mammal with liters upon liters of antibiotics) exceed realistic expectations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 39: September-October, 1987 Choosing the proper choke and shot size for an individual's particular type of shooting (such as over decoys) must be considered before hunting with steel shot. Because steel pellets are much harder than lead, pellet deformation is virtually eliminated. Additionally, steel shot weighs about thirty percent less than lead pellets of the same size, resulting in more pellets per ounce of shot. These factors produce naturally tighter, denser patterns than lead loads. Consequently, it is recommended that hunters use a more open choke, such as improved cylinder or modified, to produce patterns similar to those of traditional lead loads fired from full choke barrels. The lighter steel pellets also tend to lose their velocity faster than lead, resulting in lower retained energy or knockdown power downrange. The problem, how ever, is easily rectified by simply moving up two shot sizes. If you have been hunting with #6 lead shot, you would need to select #4 steel shot. This change will produce comparable downrange energy without sacrific ing pellet count. Remember: An ounce of #4 steel will have about the same pellet count as an ounce of #6 lead due to the weight difference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 1: January, 1949 The wild raz'orback hog of the Southern States, is as wild and fierce an animal as there is in existence today for its size, but the origination of these queer animals can be traced back to common barnyard Berkshire an'd Duroc ancestry. This most certainly' could not be proved, however, from their appearance or disposition. These shaggy-haired, long-s n o o t e d, wickedly-t u s h e d, nimble-footed, beady -eyed, lean, racy, denizens of the North Louisiana ranges are every inch pure devils. Natives of the sections where they exist, and dogs have long ago learned to respect the razorbacks. Not only that, but they also stand their own against such wild animals as bear, panther and Wildcats. The range of the wild razorback extends from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, south into Florida, and west into piney woods and hills of Louisiana and the pecan canyons of Texas. Almost generally speak ing, they inhabit the wild hilly wilderness sections, although they are also sometimes found in the vast swampy jungles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 15: January-February, 1963 It is gratifying to me to note that in the past year there has been an obvious interest in grass roots conservation education and more public interest in the wildlife and fisheries resources of the state, their management, utilization, and perpetuation. This is not a sudden awakening on the part of the people of Louisiana. On the contrary, this growing interest can be interpreted as the result of a progressive campaign by the Louisiana Wild Life and Fisheries Commission to bring about an interest on the part of all the people in the state in these natural resources which mean so much to so many people. In making our plans for the months ahead, it would further the good which has already been accomplished for us to redouble our efforts so that this growing interest in Louisiana's wildlife and fisheries resources will be-passed along from person to person. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: May-June, 1958 Weep no more for the mourning dove at the hands of the hunter. Surveys by scientists have proven that regardless of what sportsmen may do, few doves live more than a year anyway and the hunter is responsible for less than 20 per cent of the annual dove mortality. These facts have been brought out by a cooperative dove study made by ten southern states and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife service. The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries com mission's pittman-robertson section, which is headed by John D. Newsom, coordinator, conducted the study in Louisi ana. The vast majority of doves are lost -to natural mortality which includes such things as starvation, mortality caused by adverse weather conditions, predation and disease. Few of the natural deaths of these birds are as quick and clean as death by the gun of the sportsman, Newsom says. The mourning dove, the commonest dove in Louisiana, is a game bird in this state and throughout the south; in other parts of the country it is classed as a songbird.
