Book The Pasteurization of France

Download or read book The Pasteurization of France written by Bruno Latour and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can one man accomplish, even a great man and brilliant scientist? Although every town in France has a street named for Louis Pasteur, was he alone able to stop people from spitting, persuade them to dig drains, influence them to undergo vaccination? Pasteur’s success depended upon a whole network of forces, including the public hygiene movement, the medical profession (both military physicians and private practitioners), and colonial interests. It is the operation of these forces, in combination with the talent of Pasteur, that Bruno Latour sets before us as a prime example of science in action. Latour argues that the triumph of the biologist and his methodology must be understood within the particular historical convergence of competing social forces and conflicting interests. Yet Pasteur was not the only scientist working on the relationships of microbes and disease. How was he able to galvanize the other forces to support his own research? Latour shows Pasteur’s efforts to win over the French public—the farmers, industrialists, politicians, and much of the scientific establishment. Instead of reducing science to a given social environment, Latour tries to show the simultaneous building of a society and its scientific facts. The first section of the book, which retells the story of Pasteur, is a vivid description of an approach to science whose theoretical implications go far beyond a particular case study. In the second part of the book, “Irreductions,” Latour sets out his notion of the dynamics of conflict and interaction, of the “relation of forces.” Latour’s method of analysis cuts across and through the boundaries of the established disciplines of sociology, history, and the philosophy of science, to reveal how it is possible not to make the distinction between reason and force. Instead of leading to sociological reductionism, this method leads to an unexpected irreductionism.

Book excerpt: The celebrated French biologist Louis Pasteur was a scientific pioneer; his discoveries and advances led to treatments which saved countless lives. This biography takes us from Pasteur's formative years as a curious and bright child, to the first glimmers of promise he showed through school. His keen understanding of scientific principles, and a drive to enquire, experiment and innovate was soon apparent to his tutors. Pasteur was particularly interested in microbiology; his work upon germ theory and bacteriology revolutionized the idea of disease and the spread of sickness. Pasteur is also remembered for advancing the science of vaccination. The rabies virus - at the time referred to as hydrophobia for its thirst-inducing qualities - was a deadly scourge upon France and wider Europe. Through rigorous experiment, Pasteur found that vaccines administered in a timely manner prevented rabies from progressing to its fatal stage. This discovery paved the way for further advances in vaccines, increasing their significance in disease prevention. Given accolades by the government of France, and famed for retaining his diligence well into his senior years, Pasteur was granted a state funeral for his accomplishments.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasteur: The History of a Mind This book is more than a critique of Pasteur. It'is a contribution to the biological history of a swiftly changing time, a very striking period in the development of science. AS such it should be of interest to all biologists, and especially to all teachers and students of biology and of medicine. For them it was written, and translated. In this time of world upheaval and readjustment, when our young men are looking more and more to France for moral and intellectual ideals, it seems peculiarly apropos that the scientific life of one of her greatest sons, to whom the whole world owes an enormous debt of gratitude, Should be set before them clearly and interestingly. Book Pasteur Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pasteur Classic Reprint written by Percy Frankl and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasteur In the following pages we have endeavoured to present a sketch of the life and work of one of the most remarkable men of science this century has produced. His achievements are so interwoven with the circumstances by which our daily life is surrounded, that it is all but impossible to find anyone who is not directly or indirectly concerned with some part or other of his great life-work. But although the lives of so many have been profoundly affected by his genius and labours, it is only the few who have any acquaintance with the man and the method, to whom and to which these great achievements are due. It is our hope that these pages may raise the veil for many exposing to their view at once a picture of the Great Master, and of the scientific machinery which he knew so well how to set in motion and how to control. Book Pasteur and Modern Science

Download or read book Pasteur and Modern Science written by Rene J. Dubos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dubos's classic biography of Louis Pasteur, originally published in 1960 and for several years out of print is once again made available in this new and expanded hardcover edition. The original work has been enlarged by more than forty illustrations and tables, a new biographical sketch of Dubos, a glossary of technical terms and a chronological outline of Pasteur's career. The book's enduring appeal is a tribute both to its subject and to its author. Few scientists so captured the public imagination as Louis Pasteur, and fewer still had such a dramatic effect on everyday life. Dubos, a Pulitzer prize winner, was a modern biographer almost ideally suited to the task. A distinguished French-born microbiologist of broad culture, Dubos had a deep appreciation for the power and enduring significance of Pasteur's scientific work. To the more personal dimensions of the biographer's task, Dubos brought his keen insight into the wellsprings of human action, behavior, and personality. He thus appreciated the full range of Pasteur's life, including its philosophical, religious, and political dimensions. Finally, Dubos' graceful writing style allowed him to convey the excitement and significance of even the most technical aspects of Pasteur's work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasteur and His Work Dr. Emile Roux, Member of the Academy of Science and of the Academy of Medicine, Director of the Pasteur Institute, who was one of Pasteur's dearest disciples and his daily collaborator through all that period of his life which was most fertile in discoveries, has presented this book to both Academies. The following lines are taken from his speech to the Academy of Medicine during the sitting of June 21, 1921: - "M. Descour has been good enough to submit the proofs of his book to me; I have read them with the greatest interest, so attractive is Pasteur's work even to those already familiar with it, and also because M. Descour has described it with a precision, an orderliness, and an emotion worthy of so great a subject. In a volume of less than three hundred pages, the author has been able to relate what nobody should be ignorant of in Pasteur's life, and what all who are engaged in scientific work should know of the achievements of this great man."
