Download or read book Louis Harold Gray written by Sinclair Wynchank and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a scientific biography of Louis Harold (“Hal”) Gray, FRS (1905–65), a pioneer in radiobiology – a little known science that is nevertheless extremely important since it constitutes the basis of radiotherapy. Hal Gray’s work also played a vital role in ensuring that radiography would be a safe procedure for the hundreds of millions of persons in whom X-ray pictures have been taken. The book offers fascinating insights into both the history of radiobiology and the life of Hal. It contains much unique biographical material made available to the author over the past 35 years by Hal’s contemporaries, many of whom have since died. Great influences on Hal’s life and studies, including his unusual high school, Christ’s Hospital, and his firm moral beliefs, are described. But his life was not merely a gentle, cloistered existence in academia. Its ups and downs included events that would not have been out of place in a Hollywood drama. The book, the first book-length biography of Hal, is intended for all who enjoy this genre (including those without a scientific background) or have an interest in the history of radiobiology and radiotherapy.

Book Exposure of the American People to Iodine 131 from Nevada Nuclear Bomb Tests

Download or read book Exposure of the American People to Iodine 131 from Nevada Nuclear Bomb Tests written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, after more than a decade of research, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released a report which provided their assessment of radiation exposures that Americans may have received from radioactive iodine released from the atomic bomb tests conducted in Nevada during the 1950s and early 1960s. This book provides an evaluation of the soundness of the methodology used by the NCI study to estimate: Past radiation doses. Possible health consequences of exposure to iodine-131. Implications for clinical practice. Possible public health strategiesâ€"such as systematic screening for thyroid cancerâ€"to respond to the exposures. In addition, the book provides an evaluation of the NCI estimates of the number of thyroid cancers that might result from the nuclear testing program and provides guidance on approaches the U.S. government might use to communicate with the public about Iodine-131 exposures and health risks.

Book The A to Z of Nuclear Biological and Chemical Warfare

Download or read book The A to Z of Nuclear Biological and Chemical Warfare written by Benjamin C. Garrett and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human experience with nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) warfare has been limited, especially in comparison to conventional forms of warfare. Our experience with nuclear warfare is confined to a period of less than one week during the end of World War II, when the United States successfully used two nuclear weapons against targets in Japan. The course of biological warfare and modern use of biological weapons are difficult to track owing to the difficulty of differentiating deliberate use from natural outbreaks. However, the keen potential of biological weapons in acts of terror was shown in the mass disruption caused in the fall 2001 experience in the U.S. with the release of anthrax through the American postal system. Chemical weapons have been used in a handful of conflicts since their introduction to modern warfare during World War I, most recently during the Iran-Iraq War during the 1980s. Despite this limited experience, NBC warfare continues to exert a certain fascination among states. The A to Z of Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Warfare covers the development and use of NBC weapons as well as efforts to limit or control the use of these weapons through a chronology, a bibliography, an introductory essay, and dictionary entries. Over 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries provide a unique selection of terms related to NBC warfare, ranging from basic descriptions of substances used in NBC warfare to details on incidents and episodes where NBC weapons were used. Entries are structured around historical events, persons important to NBC warfare, countries where such weapons have been developed or used, and international treaties and treaty-related organizations.

Book Radiation Revised Edition

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Mahaffey
  • Publisher : Infobase Holdings, Inc
  • Release : 2020-03-01
  • ISBN : 1438195737
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Radiation Revised Edition written by James Mahaffey and published by Infobase Holdings, Inc. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most dangerous component of nuclear science has always seemed to be radiation, the bio-destructive byproduct of fission. The act of fissioning a uranium or plutonium nucleus releases energy, and about 10 percent of this energy is in the form of intense, penetrating radiation. The entire measure of energy from fission can take thousands of years to fully materialize, and therein lies the problem. Long after the fission has occurred to produce power in a nuclear reactor, the power plant has worn out and been torn down, and the ground on which the power plant sat has been seeded in grass and returned to nature, a weak echo of the power production can still occur in the remaining fission byproducts. It is this lingering hint of danger that must be studied and understood for a complete survey of nuclear power and the technology that makes it possible. Radiation, Revised Edition explains the nature of radiation in its many forms. It explores what is and isn't dangerous about radiation, explaining its effects in matter in both living and non-living things. This comprehensive resource also examines the many industrial uses of radiation, from smoke detectors to dental X-rays; the many techniques used to detect and measure this invisible phenomenon; practical measures of radiation protection; and ways of treating radiation exposure. Complete with full-color photographs and illustrations, Radiation, Revised Edition is a timely guide written in accessible language that will appeal to high school and college students alike.
