Download or read book Louis Daguerre and the Story of the Daguerreotype written by John Bankston and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 18th century the only way to preserve an image was with a pen, paper, or other drawing tools. Though several people had made progress in the development of photography, Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre is perhaps the most famous. Daguerre spent most of his life as an artist. He was used to manipulating light and working with the chemicals of his paints. He sketched the images from a camera obscura and created realistic drawings. Using the camera obscura, Daguerre made an early photograph. In partnership with Niepce, Daguerre sought to make a lasting image. Though Niepce died in 1833, Daguerre continued to experiment. Between 1835 and 1837, he perfected his process, an early form of photography. Book jacket.

Book The Body in the Anglosphere 1880 1920

Download or read book The Body in the Anglosphere 1880 1920 written by Robert W. Thurston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the body in every chapter, this book examines the changing meanings and profound significance of the physical form among the Anglo-Saxons from 1880 to 1920. They formed an imaginary—but, in many ways, quite real—community that ruled much of the world. Among them, racism became more virulent. To probe the importance of the body, this book brings together for the first time the many areas in which the physical form was newly or more extensively featured, from photography through literature, frontier wars, violent sports, and the global circus. Sex, sexuality, concepts of gender including women’s possibilities in all areas of life, and the meanings of race and of civilization figured regularly in Anglo discussions. Black people challenged racism by presenting their own photos of respectable folk. As all this unfolded, Anglo men and women faced the problem of maintaining civilized control vs. the need to express uninhibited feeling. With these issues in mind, it is evident that the origins of today’s debates about race and gender lie in the late nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: Ohio State students, faculty and staff were photographed by artist and professor Ann Hamilton through a semi-transparent membrane that registersin focus only what immediately touches its surface while rendering more softly the gesture or outline of the body. In these images, touch-something we feel more than we see-is visible. In them, we feel the glance of cloth's fall, the weight of a hand, the press of a cheek, the possibility of recognition in portraits haunted by contact.Standing behind the semi-opaque film, one can hear but can not see, hidden until stepping toward the surface, guided by my voice. Each press of the object, the face, a hand, or cloth touching the membrane is revealed in focus, the shallow depth of field a consequence of the membrane's optical qualities. The images made in this exchange-between a subject that offers self or object and a voice that stands in for the visually absent camera-record an interiority that is perhaps more private, more vulnerable than the self we offer up in the world of a constantly present camera. Following and trusting the voice while having a sense of being hidden makes a space for this vulnerability. Each image is a tactile register of an exchange.

Book Capturing the Light

Download or read book Capturing the Light written by Helen Rappaport and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capturing the Light starts with a tiny scrap of purple-tinged paper, 176 years old and about the size of a postage stamp. On it you can just make out a tiny, ghostly image of a gothic window, an image so small and perfect that it 'might be supposed to be the work of some Lilliputian artist': the world's first photographic negative. This captivating book traces the lives of two very different men in the 1830s, both racing to be the first to solve one of the world's oldest problems: how to capture an image and keep it for ever. On the one hand there is Henry Fox Talbot: a quiet, solitary gentleman-amateur tinkering away on his farm in the English countryside. On the other Louis Daguerre, a flamboyant, charismatic French showman in search of fame and fortune. Only one question remains: who will get there first?
