I have been blessed to have known hundreds of the surviving U-Bootfahrer and dozens of the Skippers. This book contains unseen photographs taken by German submarine crew and captains during each war. The World War One selection features a submariner’s photos of U-25, an early German U-boat. They belonged to WO Friedrich Pohl, who served on U-boats SM-25 and SMU-33. There are many photos of the U-boat itself, crew on deck, and attacks on Norwegian merchant ships with the surface gun. U-25 was launched July 12, 1913, sank a total of twenty-one ships and 14,126 tons, and surrendered to France on February 23, 1919. The World War Two photos include images from an original WW2 U-boat commander’s photo album. It belonged to Kapitan Leutnant Herbert Bruninghaus. As a U-boat navigator, he served on the famous U-38 under ace Heinrich Liebe. Bruninghaus later went on to command three U-boats of his own: U-6, U-148, and U-1059. There are also original images from a Kriegmarine officer’s photo album (unfortunately unnamed), including photos of Commander Prien’s U-47 returning to Kiel after attacks at Scapa Flow.

Eager to get beyond the stereotypes perpetuated in movies and novels and find out who these elusive sailors really were, archivist Timothy Mulligan started searching official records. Eventually he went straight to the source, conducting a survey of more than a thousand U-boat officers and enlisted men and interviewing a number of them personally. The result is this character study of the German submarine force that challenges traditional and revisionist views of the service. Mulligan found striking similarities in the men's geographic and social origins, education, and previous occupations, particularly within the specialized engineering and radio branches of the submarine force. The information he gathered establishes quantifiable patterns in age, length of service, and experience, as well as the organization's overall recruitment policies and training standards. The numbers and losses of U-boat personnel are also fully examined. Beyond these objective characteristics, this study lists such subjective factors as morale, treatment of enemy ship survivors, and the relationship of the submariners to the Nazi regime, and it confirms a serious crisis in morale in late 1943. The roles played by the head of the U-boat arm, Grand Admiral Karl Donitz, and its organizational chief, Admiral Hans-Georg von Friedeburg, are thoroughly addressed. Mulligan concludes that the U-boat arm quickly evolved from a handpicked elite to a more representative sample of the German navy at large but continued to be treated as an elite force. The only comprehensive investigation yet published, this book also draws on POW interrogations of U-boat survivors and documentation of Kriegsmarine personnel policy obtained from German archives.

The German U-Bootfahrer were some of the most honorable fighters in the war despite wartime propaganda to the contrary. They did not machine gun men in the water but rather, they helped struggling survivors of the sunken ships in the early years. After 'Black May' of 1943 when the German codes were broken and 'Huff-Duff' (or High Frequency Directional Finder = HFDF) came on the scene and U-Boats did not dare linger on the surface did the U-Boats cease giving aid; they never murdered men at sea. Nearly 3,000 ships were sunk, tens of thousand merchant sailors died, more than 800 U-Boats were lost and nearly 29,000 U-Bootfahrer perished in the cold oceans of the world. At the end of the war however, the U-Bootwaffe was the only oversubscribed branch of the Wehrmacht (German military forces). After 'Black May' U-Boats had one chance in ten of returning from their first Feindfahrt (war patrol) and nine out of ten chances of being sunk. Still they enlisted.....still they went to sea, most never to return.
