Download or read book Lost Time is Never Found Again English written by Sahadeva Dasa and published by Golden Age Media . This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time needs your tender loving care because it is a unique, irreplaceable resource. Taking it for granted would be your undoing. Time is not found on supermarkets shelves in case you need an extra supply. There are no vending machines even. There is no place where you can buy or hire extra time. Neither you can pull it out from the last year’s stock. As the Sun sets on the horizon, your day is gone and as the Sun rises in the east, your night is gone. Gone means gone for ever, never to return. There are many things in life which go and come back but time is not one of those.

Download or read book The Multicultural Dictionary of Proverbs written by Harold V. Cordry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All cultures have proverbs that capsulize subjects simply and effectively. Many of these are cross-cultural. For example, according to a Danish proverb, "The greater the fear, the nearer the danger," while a Latin proverb says, "The less there is of fear, the less there is danger." This work includes over 20,000 proverbs from more than 120 languages, nationalities and ethnic groups. The proverbs are arranged under 1,300 headings (e.g., accidents, divided loyalty, marriage, prosperity, shame), and each includes the nationality, group or language in which it originated. Comprehensive keyword and subject indexes allow access to the material in multiple ways.
Download or read book Russian English Dictionary of Proverbs and Sayings written by Alexander Margulis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary contains 2,375 Russian sayings and proverbs and their English counterparts. Variants of each saying are included, and careful attention is given to the differences in British and American versions. For example, the Russian saying that is interpreted as "Children behave in a childish way, and they cannot be expected to act like grown-up people," is first given in Russian (in the Cyrillic alphabet) and then in English, and is then followed by the nearest English-language equivalent sayings in Britain and the United States: "Young colts will canter" (British) and "Boys will be boys" (American). The proverbs and sayings are arranged alphabetically by the first Russian word (in the Cyrillic alphabet) and are cross-referenced so the reader can find analogous Russian versions of English sayings. There is a keyword index for each language (one in English, one in Russian in the Cyrillic alphabet), which allows the reader to find a proverb or a saying without knowing the first word. Proverbs and sayings are current and include those popular in both spoken Russian and literature. The prefatory matter is in both English and Russian, for readers who have a command of either language.

Download or read book Phraseology and Culture in English written by Paul Skandera and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposition that there is a correlation between language and culture or culture-specific ways of thinking can be traced back to the views of Herder and von Humboldt in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is generally accepted today that a language, especially its lexicon, influences its speakers' cultural patterns of thought and perception in various ways, for example through a culture-specific segmentation of the extralinguistic reality, the frequency of occurrence of particular lexical items, or the existence of keywords or key word combinations revealing core cultural values. The aim of this volume is to explore the cultural dimension of a wide range of preconstructed or semi-preconstructed word combinations in English. The 17 papers of the volume are divided into four sections, focusing on particular lexemes (e.g. enjoy and its collocates), types of word combinations (e.g. proverbs and similes), use-related varieties (such as the language of tourism or answering-machine messages), and user-related varieties (such as Aboriginal English or African English). The sections are preceded by a prologue, tracing the development of the study of formulaic language, and followed by an epilogue, which draws together the threads laid out in the various papers. The relation between language and culture in general has been explored in a number of important works over the past ten years. However, the study of the relation between English phraseology and culture in particular has been largely neglected. This volume is the first book-length publication devoted entirely to this topic.
