Book The Last Voyageur

Download or read book The Last Voyageur written by Vince Welch and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boatman's Quarterly review: "It will keep you on the edge of your easy chair. You'll want to read this Amos Burg book by Vince Welch more than once, that's for sure." CLICK HERE to download the first 45 pages from, The Last Voyageur (Provide us with a little information and we'll send your download directly to your inbox) “What is this thing in me that enables me to leave comforts and a wide variety of entertainments and feel a strange satisfaction wandering down a cheerless and indifferent river, enduring hardships and eating very little and exposed to all sorts of weather . . . tonight even as I sit shivering and listening to the patter of the rain, I see myself in many places all over the world, wandering like a gull on the winds, working with the ideals of Truth and Beauty as part of my vision to bring these things back with me for other people to see.” -- Amos Burg, Yukon River, July 1928 * Amos Burg ran all the major rivers of the West when they still flowed freely and potential danger was just around the next bend * Part early 20th-century history, part adventure, part biography of the West’s first commercial outdoor guide Amos Burg (1901--1986), a native of Portland, Oregon, was the first to complete transits of the free-flowing, undammed Snake and Columbia Rivers by canoe, and in 1938 he became the first to navigate the length of the Colorado River in a rubber raft. In his daring explorations of waterways from the Southwest up through Canada and into Alaska, Burg is considered to be the only person known to have run all major Western rivers from source to mouth. In The Last Voyageur: Amos Burg and the Rivers of the West author Vince Welch, himself a river guide, weaves a passionate and well-researched narrative using extensive material from Burg’s own rich archives. History buffs, paddlers, and adventure readers alike will delight in this remarkable regional history of the larger-than-life Burg, a quintessential man of the American West and one of the last “voyageurs” of North America’s great waterways.

Book Lost to the Sea Britain s Vanished Coastal Communities

Download or read book Lost to the Sea Britain s Vanished Coastal Communities written by Stephen Wade and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-07-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once there was a Roman settlement on what is now Filey Brig. In Holderness, a prosperous town called Ravenser saw kings and princes on its soil, and its progress threatened the good people of Grimsby. But the Romans and the Ravenser folk are long gone, as are their streets and buildings sunk beneath the hungry waves of what was once the German Ocean.Lost to the Sea: The Yorkshire Coast & Holderness tells the story of the small towns and villages that were swallowed up by the North Sea. Old maps show an alarming number of such places that no longer exist. Over the centuries, since prehistoric times, people who settled along this stretch have faced the constant and unstoppable hunger of the waves, as the Yorkshire coastline has gradually been eaten away. County directories of a century ago lament the loss of communities once included in their listings; cliffs once seeming so strong have steadily crumbled into the water. In the midst of this, people have tried to live and prosper through work and play, always aware that their great enemy, the relentless sea, is facing them. As the East Coast has lost land, the mud flats around parts of Spurn, at the mouth of the Humber, have grown. Stephen Wades book tells the history of that vast land of Holderness as well, which the poet Philip Larkin called the end of land.

Download or read book Lost off Trevose written by Brian French and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ship that will not obey the helm must obey the rocks. Trevose Head, the land mass jutting out into the Atlantic from North Cornwall's shore, has been called the Lizard of the North Coast. This beautiful but inhospitable coast has seen many disasters over the centuries, from ocean-going sailing ships blown off course to coastal vessels bound for Wales and the Bristol Channel foundering and colliding, and colliers blowing up. Both world wars also saw intense activity off Trevose as German U-boats attempted to prevent supplies from reaching the UK. The torpedoing of HMS Warwick in February 1944 deeply affected the whole community. This illustrated history reveals the many shipwrecks to plague the notorious Trevose Head and considers the development of safety at sea, starting with the erection of Trevose Lighthouse in 1857, a project strenuously opposed by most seafarers at the time as it was believed that lighthouses attracted pirates like moths to a flame. A must for all shipwreck and local historians and those with a love of the Cornish coastline.

Book Mr Price 27 Years with the RNLI

Download or read book Mr Price 27 Years with the RNLI written by Chris Price and published by Chris Price. This book was released on 2020-05-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mr Price' Have you ever felt vulnerable near the sea? - top of a cliff, drifting off the beach or boating in bad weather - wind, waves and tide. Running through your mind will be the prospect of a disaster - that sudden realisation that the outdoors is so much bigger than you are. There could quickly come a moment when you are desperate for help. Risk is no longer fun - it's got serious. That moment of acute consciousness is when you need the likes of Mr Price. The British people, inhabiting this island, have a passion for the sea. In summer months we flock to the coast, some venture into the waves, some need to go beyond. Over generations this maritime adventure has taken us to far lands and has given this nation its global reputation as a sea faring nation. This has come at a cost. Charts of the British coast show the marks of wrecks that each tell their own story of weather, misadventure and misfortune. Graveyards in these areas sometimes help tell the grizzly tale of lives ended in such disasters but for so many more, there is no mark on land for those lost to the seas. Back in the early 19th Century when our nation depended so much on nautical supply lines there were an average of 1800 shipwrecks a year. Sir William Hillary set out a plan for a large body of men to be trained and ready to help save lives at sea. And so, in 1824, was born the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. If you have visited the coast you will probably have seen the reassuring presence of those blue and orange craft that you had seen on telly, rescuing lives and craft. It's the RNLI, manifest in its lifeboats, crew wrapped in high-vis oilies and life jackets, helmeted, anonymous. These men and women - all volunteers - represent the bravest of our nation. As we might pray to be lifted from the worst of the weather and the sea, these people respond to the maroon, tog up and set off into the worst of it. The autobiographical account of Mr Price will take you with them out into the face of danger. Chris Price, a craftsman and highly respected professional out in the gun trade, provides, tantalisingly, just sufficient insight into his private life to help us understand the motivations and relationships that hang behind the lifeboatman. Then, it's all about the team. The ups and downs of progressing through the ranks eventually to be called by the skipper to join the crew on a shout. It's written in Chris's own voice - you will get to know this remarkable character well, on and off the boat. The selected stories of just some of his such shouts reveal the true picture of what goes on aboard a lifeboat on operations. The people, their friendships and the utter reliance on each other to be able to do what they do. The weather, the sea sickness, the routines, the exhaustion. The sense of achievement in a successful rescue and the numbing emotions of body recovery. You will be gripped as you travel with them. The excitement will be tangible, you will smell the diesel and the sick. You will be part of the team on board and with them you will laugh and cry. At the end of each chapter you will be exhausted. 'Mr Price' is a read for everyone. The life lessons flood out on every page. Only very few books convey the power of relationships and bonds that exist in small teams under pressure; this is one of them. For seafarers, it is a cautionary tale; for landlubbers it is a glimpse into the perils of the sea. For all, it is the story of real people putting themselves at huge risk to help others. It is spellbinding and an emotional roller-coaster. Simon R West OBE. MA.

Download or read book Search and Rescue written by Lorna Siggins and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 13 March 2017, the Rescue 116 crew of Capt. Dara Fitzpatrick, Capt. Mark Duffy, Paul Ormsby and Ciarán Smith took off from Dublin airport just after 2300 hours for a medical evacuation off the west coast. The first indication of disaster came when the crew failed to answer a radio call at 12.46 a.m. At 02.16 hours, sister helicopter Rescue 118 spotted a casualty and debris in the water. There would be no survivors from R116, and extensive searches failed to locate the bodies of two of the four crew. The crash occurred just six months after the loss of another experienced volunteer, Caitriona Lucas from Doolin Coast Guard in Co Clare; and 18 years after the loss of four Air Corps crew who were returning from a night rescue in thick fog off the south-east coast. In Search and Rescue, Lorna Siggins exposes the shocking systemic flaws that led to these tragic deaths, but also looks at successful rescues where, despite all the odds, the courage and dedication of members of the Irish Coast Guard and the volunteers who work with them have saved countless lives, including the dramatic rescue of paddleboarders Sara Feeney and Ellen Glynn off the coast of Clare in 2020.
