Download or read book Slowspoke written by Mark Schimmoeller and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why a unicycle? Why a cross-country trip? Why leave a prominent New York magazine and return to the simple life in Kentucky? Reminiscent of classic literary travelogues, Mark Schimmoeller's Slowspoke: A Unicyclist's Guide to America takes readers on an inward, emotional journey as he inches across landscapes and communities from North Carolina to Arizona. Schimmoeller became inspired by his unicycle as an adolescent. It taught him that rushing--whether down the driveway or toward adulthood--would cause a fall, and so, instead of accepting the speeding, straight line that de-fines modern American life, he adopted his single wheel's wayward rhythms. Written with poise and humor, Slowspoke is more than a cross-country trip on a unicyc≤ it's a meditation on a playful, recalcitrant slowness that is increasingly rare in a culture obsessed with acceleration. At times ach-ing and other times joyful, Schimmoeller intersperses recollections of his journey with vignettes of his present-day, off-the-grid homesteading with his wife in Kentucky and their efforts to save an old-growth forest. Schimmoeller's personal journey will resonate with anyone who has slowed down to experience life at a unicycle's speed or who longs to do so, who has fallen in love or searched for it, or who has treasured tall trees or mourned their loss.

Download or read book Riddles Rhymes and Alliteration written by Jane Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Riddles, Rhyme and Alliteration" is an activity-based resource that encourages children aged 4-7 years to concentrate, listen to and discriminate between different speech sounds. Teachers can use the material separately or as part of a phonics programme, as each activity has the flexibility to be used with individuals, groups or whole classes. Older children who have listening and auditory discrimination difficulties, poor listening skills, and mild to moderate hearing loss or 'glue ear' can also benefit from using the material. Each of the eighteen sections is based on a particular phoneme and includes two or three pages of illustrations to accompany the activities. The activities are photocopiable and include: riddles which can be solved with the help of the picture pages; exercises on alliteration and rhyming words; tongue twisters; a story containing words beginning with the target phonemes; and a puzzle worksheet based on some of the words from the picture pages. All of the activities have clear instructions and are presented orally by the teacher, except the puzzle worksheets that encourage the child to work independently. The picture pages can also be coloured in at school or at home to help consolidate what has been taught. Written by a teacher for teachers, "Riddles, Rhyme and Alliteration" will prove a welcome resource for those who have limited time for preparation.

Download or read book Salt Lane written by William Shaw and published by Mulholland Books. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An "excellent," darkly-told crime novel in the tradition of Tana French and Ian Rankin (Wall Street Journal). Sergeant Alexandra Cupidi is a recent transfer from the London metro police to the rugged Kentish countryside. She's done little to ingratiate herself with her new colleagues, who find her too brash, urban, and -- to make matters worse -- she investigated her first partner, a veteran detective, and had him arrested on murder charges. Now assigned the brash young Constable Jill Ferriter to look after, she's facing another bizarre case: a woman found floating in local marsh land, dead of no apparent cause. The case gets even stranger when the detectives contact the victim's next of kin, her son, a high-powered graphic designer living in London. Adopted at the age of two, he'd never known his mother, he tells the detectives, until a homeless womanknocked on his door, claiming to be his mother, just the night before: at the same time her body was being dredged from the water. Juggling the case, her aging mother, her teenage daughter, and the loneliness of country life, Detective Cupidi must discover who the woman really was, who killed her, and how she managed to reconnect with her long lost son, apparently from beyond the grave.
