Book The Indian Mutiny and the British Imagination

Download or read book The Indian Mutiny and the British Imagination written by Gautam Chakravarty and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gautam Chakravarty explores representations of the event which has become known in the British imagination as the 'Indian Mutiny' of 1857 in British popular fiction and historiography. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources including diaries, autobiographies and state papers, Chakravarty shows how narratives of the rebellion were inflected by the concerns of colonial policy and by the demands of imperial self-image. He goes on to discuss the wider context of British involvement in India from 1765 to the 1940s, and engages with constitutional debates, administrative measures, and the early nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian novel. Chakravarty approaches the mutiny from the perspectives of postcolonial theory as well as from historical and literary perspectives to show the extent to which the insurrection took hold of the popular imagination in both Britain and India. The book has a broad interdisciplinary appeal and will be of interest to scholars of English literature, British imperial history, modern Indian history and cultural studies.

Book Eyes to Wonder Tongue to Praise

Download or read book Eyes to Wonder Tongue to Praise written by Agnieszka Pokojska and published by Wydawnictwo UJ. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of articles written for Professor Marta Gibińska by her colleagues and friends, from universities both in Poland and abroad. The texts presented in this volume cover a wide spectrum of topics. Part I, devoted to Shakespeare, comprises wide-ranging work from renowned specialists in the field: studies on historical background, sources, theatrical, screen and literary reception, as well as translation. Part II contains articles which deal with multiple authors, genres and perspectives, but are uniformly passionate and insightful. The title Eyes to Wonder, Tongue to Praise, a poetic phrase borrowed from Shakespeare, conveys what seems to be a defining quality of both the contributors to this volume and its recipient: namely, the ability to translate keen appreciation of literature not into speechless awe but eloquent praise, combined with the generosity to share it with others.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Sensation Fiction

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Sensation Fiction written by Andrew Mangham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1859 the popular novelist Wilkie Collins wrote of a ghostly woman, dressed from head to toe in white garments, laying her cold, thin hand on the shoulder of a young man as he walked home late one evening. His novel The Woman in White became hugely successful and popularised a style of writing that came to be known as sensation fiction. This Companion highlights the energy, the impact and the inventiveness of the novels that were written in 'sensational' style, including the work of Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Mrs Henry Wood and Florence Marryat. It contains fifteen specially-commissioned essays and includes a chronology and a guide to further reading. Accessible yet rigorous, this Companion questions what influenced the shape and texture of the sensation novel, and what its repercussions were both in the nineteenth century and up to the present day.

Download or read book School Society Nation written by Rajni Kumar and published by Orient Blackswan. This book was released on 2006 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology that deals with the problems and challenges of contemporary Indian education. This volume has 20 essays by eminent persons that discuss child-oriented ideas regarding curricula, books and the learning processes. Many writers in this book speak from a lifetime of engagement with education about issues as varied as globalisation and its impact on education to the importance of educational methods that do not discriminate between boys and girls, the disabled and the non-disabled, the rich and the poor. This book does not aim to merely report current educational research and pertinently, seeks to promote debate on difficult issues confronting us in education.
