Book excerpt: In this stunning collection of new poems, Mary Oliver returns to the imagery that has defined her life’s work, describing with wonder both the everyday and the unaffected beauty of nature. Herons, sparrows, owls, and kingfishers flit across the page in meditations on love, artistry, and impermanence. Whether considering a bird’s nest, the seeming patience of oak trees, or the artworks of Franz Marc, Oliver reminds us of the transformative power of attention and how much can be contained within the smallest moments. At its heart, Blue Horses asks what it means to truly belong to this world, to live in it attuned to all its changes. Humorous, gentle, and always honest, Oliver is a visionary of the natural world.

The poems also explore aging and mortality with restless grace. Approaching his vast subjects by way of small moments, Wright magnifies details to reveal truths much larger than the quotidian happenings that engendered them. His is an astonishing, flexible, domestic-yet-universal verse. As the critic Helen Vendler has observed, Wright is a poet who "sounds like nobody else."

Book excerpt: Readers who have a feeling for astrology will find the poems in this collection lively, charming, and perspicacious! Joanna Nealon has written two Sunsign poems for each of the twelve constellations, one, a dignified archetype, and the other, a humorous stereotype. Though the sub-title of the book is "Sirius" Fun, suggesting a light-hearted approach, the poems are set against the shimmering backdrop of a meaningful cosmos. "Astrology is an echo of an ancient high wisdom, the divining of super-sensible realities which underlie the universe." This wisdom indicates that horoscopes are not imposed on us from without, but that we choose them before our birth, as an expression of who we are at any given stage of our evolution. In short, a Ram wants to be a Ram!

Book excerpt: We are in an education crisis. We need to restore the teaching profession to one of respect and support and provide effective education to enable current students, the new kids, to rise to their full potential What a fabulous book. Herm and Dolores have written a truly inspirational resource for teachers. This should be required reading for anyone preparing to enter the classroomand for anyone who needs to step back and rethink, think through, or reconsider their practice. They speak to the readers heart as well as the head, and Herms poetry is the best medicine I know for preventing teacher burnout. Carol Jago, president of the National Council of Teachers of English and long-time middle and high school teacher in Santa Monica, California The Missing Piece by Dolores and Hermon Card is the book weve all been waiting for about how to educate the new kids, this evolutionary bunch of uniquely different individuals known variously by labels as quirky as they are. You name it and this book covers it, and in a style as usable as it is advanced. Dolores and Hermon encourage students to make connections to themselves and then work beyond themselves to extend their reachto work with us, not for us. The raw truth about our current education system and how to fix it is covered, with poetry, with solutions and with expansive teaching styles that include meditation, Reiki, chakras, the higher self, and the importance of spirituality. No, this isnt new age; it is new thought, in its most courageous forma balanced and realistic way to educate the whole child. I was blown away by The Missing Piece. No one else has looked at our educational system today, and the various proposals to fix whats wrong, with eyes and hearts broad enough to recognize what was and is still missing, what the new kids must havea holistic approach. Thank you, Dolores and Hermon Card, for giving us a miracle. P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D., author of Children of the Fifth World, Future Memory, and Near Death Experiences: The Rest of the Story

Book Death in Milton s Poetry

Download or read book Death in Milton s Poetry written by Clay Daniel and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From his earliest verses (the Latin verses written at Cambridge) to his first original English poem (the Infant ode), to his masterpiece (Lycidas) and its sad echo (Epitaphium Damonis), through his mature trilogy (Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes), Milton repeatedly seeks to explain why people die. Though Milton frequently changed his mind on important subjects, his fundamental view of death did not change. Milton throughout his life insists that death, both physical and spiritual, is caused by sin. In attempting to understand the significance of this belief, Death in Milton's Poetry will suggest some major re-evaluations of old assumptions." "This book is divided into two parts. The first part contains examples of death that support Milton's belief that death is caused by sin. The second part contains poems that focus on deaths that appear to violate this belief. Since Milton illustrates his belief in his mature works, Part 1 includes Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes. As the pattern of death emerges in these poems, the reader is able to see that Paradise Regained is as much about the death of Satan as it is about the life of Jesus and that Milton's drama focuses on an unregenerate Samson whose tragedy is his inability ever to reconcile with God." "The poems examined in Part 2 explain deaths that appear to violate Milton's, belief. In vindicating Milton's view of death, the Latin funeral elegies and "On the Death of a Fair Infant Dying of a Cough" form a pattern that culminates in Lycidas. Recognizing this pattern in Lycidas is indispensible to understanding the radical statement of Epitaphium Damonis, a poem that records Milton's temporary disillusionment with Christianity." "In addition to new insights into the individual poems, two patterns are highlighted. In Milton's earlier poems, readers usually have seen classicism as complementing Christianity. When Milton turns to death, however, he opposes classicism to Christianity, contrasting (except in the case of Epitaphium Damonis) the limited pagan gods of classicism with the providence of an omnipotent God. This antagonism is reinforced by another pattern that emerges in the poems. Though all sins tend to death, some sins are more fatal than others. In much of Milton's poetry, perhaps the most consistently fatal of sins was lust; and Milton frequently represents this lust as a characteristic of classicism."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection juxtaposes text from Google Search autocomplete with the intimate language of prayer. Corporate jargon coexists with the incantatory and ancient ghazal form. Ahmed’s second book of poetry explores the terrain of loss—of a beloved family member, of human dignity and potential, of the earth as it stands, of hope. Her poems weave mourning with the erratic process of healing, skepticism with an unsteady attempt to regain faith. With poems that are by turns elegiac, biting, and tender, Bring Now the Angels conveys a desire to move toward transformation and rebirth, even among seemingly insurmountable obstacles: chronic disease, corporate greed, environmental harm, and a general atmosphere of anxiety and violence. UNDERGROUND …They are turning their locks to paint their faces and their daughters’ faces. They look on as the girls regard their eyes in mirrors, in the long cracked mirror of history, and war. They paint themselves into existence inside the shuttered rooms of their hearts, where freedom still bristles…
