Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost Glory: India's Capitalism Story deconstructs India's industrialization story, challenging contemporary ideas about her economy. Based on careful and detailed empirical analyses of India's industrialization, for a period of almost seven decades, the book provides deeply-nuanced depictions of the history of political economy, that have affected India's industrialization over the course of a century. These dimensions of India's economic history have never before been collated and presented. The presentation takes readers on a definitive evidence-based survey of India's industrial landscape. It includes a detailed historical description of the intellectual origins of India's modern industrialization, anchored in a privileged view of economic policy making. Grounded in deep historical and political analyses, that account for the variations, continuities, and changes in institutional contingencies, the facts derived on India's long-term economic performance are used to put the record straight. The findings of the book will transform debate, and set the agenda for thoughtfully assessing what course the Indian economy needs to follow.

Book In Search of Lost Glory

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sindhi nationalism is one of the oldest yet least studied cases of identity politics in Pakistan. Ethnic discontent appeared in Sindh in opposition to the rule of the Bombay presidency; to the onslaught of Punjabi settlers in the wake of canal irrigation; and, most decisively, to the arrival of millions of Muhajirs (Urdu-speaking migrants) after Partition. Under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and Asif Zardari, the Pakistan People's Party has upheld the Sindhi nationalist cause, even while playing the game of federalist politics. On the other side for half a century have been hardcore Sindhi nationalist groups, led by Marxists, provincial autonomists, landlord pirs and liberal intelligentsia in pursuit of ethnic outbidding. This book narrates the story of the Bhutto dynasty, the Muhajir factor, nationalist ideologues, factional feuds amongst landed elites, and the role of violence as a maker and shaper of Sindhi nationalism. Moreover, it examines the role of the PPP as an ethnic entrepreneur through an analysis of its politics within the electoral arena and beyond. Bringing together extensive fieldwork and comparative studies of ethno-nationalism, both within and outside Pakistan, Asma Faiz uncovers the fascinating world of Sindhi nationalism.

Book India Unlimited

Download or read book India Unlimited written by Arvind Panagariya and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India used to contribute approximately a quarter of the world's GDP until 1700 CE. As recently as 1820, this share was a hefty 16 per cent. But the Industrial Revolution shifted the centre of gravity of the global economy towards the West. The pernicious, indeed exploitative, policies of the British added to this shift by greatly impoverishing India.India's own policies during the first four decades following Independence denied it a rapid return to prosperity. But now that it has left those policies behind, opened up its economy and created a large GDP base, India can aspire to return to the prominent position it enjoyed in the global economy for so long. In The New India: A Reformer's Guide, one of the country's foremost economists, Arvind Panagariya, sets out a detailed pathway for India to regain its lost glory.

Book English for Lovers of English

Download or read book English for Lovers of English written by S.K. Rana and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, I have brought together about 1,400 utterances that are faulty. None of these faulty utterances have been produced by me to illustrate incorrect use of English. All the faulty utterances found in this book have been taken from printed materialmostly from the newspapers I read. In order to focus attention on the error, I have shortened some of the faulty utterances. To me, it is very important that the faulty utterances in this book have not been produced by me. Jacques Barzun, the celebrated American scholar and recipient of the Gold Medal for Criticism from the American Academy of Arts and Letters has something very pertinent to say on genuine faults as opposed to faults that have been produced as sample utterances. This is what Barzun says: In student writing, when the assignments are frequent and well designed, all kinds of error and clumsiness occur that are never found in the sample sentences of manuals and grammar books. These faults have the advantage of being genuine; they represent somebodys way of thought, and finding them faulty is a therapeutic attack on the mind that produced them. Barzun is talking about writing done by university students in America, but what he says about it is applicable to a great deal of Indian writing too.

Book Paul s Letter to the Romans

Download or read book Paul s Letter to the Romans written by Ben Witherington and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004-03-02 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Paul’s letter to the Romans is the most studied and commented-on document from the biblical period, the major exegetical books on Romans from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have been overwhelmingly shaped by the Reformed tradition. Through a careful survey of work on Romans by both ancient Church Fathers and modern exegetical scholars, Ben Witherington III here argues that the interpretation of Romans since the Reformation has been far too indebted to — and at key points led astray by — Augustinian readings of the text as filtered through Luther, Calvin, and others. In this first full-scale socio-rhetorical commentary on Romans, Witherington gleans fresh insights from reading the text of Paul’s epistle in light of early Jewish theology, the historical situation of Rome in the middle of the first century A.D., and Paul’s own rhetorical concerns. Giving serious consideration to the social and rhetorical background of Romans allows readers to hear Paul on his own terms, not just through the various voices of his later interpreters. Witherington’s groundbreaking work also features a new, clear translation of the Greek text, and each section of the commentary ends with a brief discussion titled “Bridging the Horizons,” which suggests how the ancient text of Romans may speak to us today.

Download or read book Fallen Glory written by James Crawford and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inviting, fascinating compendium of twenty-one of history's most famous lost places, from the Tower of Babel to the Twin Towers Buildings are more like us than we realize. They can be born into wealth or poverty, enjoying every privilege or struggling to make ends meet. They have parents—gods, kings and emperors, governments, visionaries and madmen—as well as friends and enemies. They have duties and responsibilities. They can endure crises of faith and purpose. They can succeed or fail. They can live. And, sooner or later, they die. In Fallen Glory, James Crawford uncovers the biographies of some of the world’s most fascinating lost and ruined buildings, from the dawn of civilization to the cyber era. The lives of these iconic structures are packed with drama and intrigue. Soap operas on the grandest scale, they feature war and religion, politics and art, love and betrayal, catastrophe and hope. Frequently their afterlives have been no less dramatic—their memories used and abused down the millennia for purposes both sacred and profane. They provide the stage for a startling array of characters, including Gilgamesh, the Cretan Minotaur, Agamemnon, Nefertiti, Genghis Khan, Henry VIII, Catherine the Great, Adolf Hitler, and even Bruce Springsteen. The twenty-one structures Crawford focuses on include The Tower of Babel, The Temple of Jerusalem, The Library of Alexandria, The Bastille, Kowloon Walled City, the Berlin Wall, and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Ranging from the deserts of Iraq, the banks of the Nile and the cloud forests of Peru, to the great cities of Jerusalem, Istanbul, Paris, Rome, London and New York, Fallen Glory is a unique guide to a world of vanished architecture. And, by picking through the fragments of our past, it asks what history’s scattered ruins can tell us about our own future.
