Book excerpt: When Zeus sends out an edict that all mortals will be killed off due to their disloyalty to the gods, Hermes decides to take matters into his own hands to stop this from happening and makes a hero of his line to fight against the gods. However, someone forgot to tell Anton about his destiny…Lost Child of Hermes is the epic story of the mortal son of Hermes; born to stop the annihilation of the mortal race and hidden from the gods out to destroy him until he is ready. Orphaned early in his life, Anton is forced to live among different groups of people and endure some of the worst fates any mortal can live through – racism, slavery, torture, and even death – all because of a destiny no one told him he was to carry. Only when he is face to face with the God of War does he learn his fate, but is given no guidance on how to fulfill his destiny and stop the end of the world as he knows it.This book is a YA fantasy taking place in ancient Greek times. The trials that Anton goes through in his life are similar to situations that the modern YA reader would be able to relate to, especially if they find themselves a victim of bullying. This book hopes to inspire the younger generations to be able to overcome the feelings of being a victim and finding faith in themselves – and others – when all they feel as if they are “cursed” to be this way.

Life is past for me. My poor young wife will never see her lambkin any more. I cave in. Keep the book and let me drown myself." At this moment one of the passengers appeared with the missing book. He had found it under his mattress, and now restored it with the remark: "I saw you foraging in my bunk when you returned aboard at Java, and wondered what blooming tec game you was up to at the time. I found this the next day when I was making my bed, and was waiting till the owner claimed it. But when I heard the row you was making about a book, as I passed here just now, I thought I'd show it. Is it yours?" " Yes---yes," cried Nicodemus, snatching it from the man, and hugging it to his heart, as a fond mother would do with a long-lost child. "You see, fliend Tultle, the mistake you made suspecting me, and the collectness of my theoly." Nicodemus looked with watery-eyed admiration at Wung Ti, who was standing now upright, with folded arms, a picture of mild reproach. He chuckled craftily as he replied: " Good--good. As deep as the ocean. Artful as they make them. The smartest covey aboard this craft, barring none. You have my most profound admiration, sir." ' " Do you still mean to accuse me of keeping that leadel, Tultle, eh? " asked Wung loftily. "Oh Lor! Oh Lorl What an actor he'd make," chuckled the detective. "Why, he could down the blinders over the most eye-skiimed. In the force he'd be a regular treasure." It was evident that Nicodemus D. Turtle was one of those mastiff-like geniuses who never relinquish their grip of an idea. He had settled it that Wunghad abstracted and concealed the book, also that the passenger...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don't need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week." So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic--and sarcastic asides--to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who's who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. "If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that." Dramatic full-color illustrations throughout by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco make this volume--a must for home, library, and classroom shelves--as stunning as it is entertaining.

Book Classical Greek Theatre

    Book Details:
  • Author : Clifford Ashby
  • Publisher : University of Iowa Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 158729463X
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Classical Greek Theatre written by Clifford Ashby and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many dogmas regarding Greek theatre were established by researchers who lacked experience in the mounting of theatrical productions. In his wide-ranging and provocative study, Clifford Ashby, a theatre historian trained in the practical processes of play production as well as the methods of historical research, takes advantage of his understanding of technical elements to approach his ancient subject from a new perspective. In doing so he challenges many long-held views. Archaeological and written sources relating to Greek classical theatre are diverse, scattered, and disconnected. Ashby's own (and memorable) fieldwork led him to more than one hundred theatre sites in Greece, southern Italy, Sicily, and Albania and as far into modern Turkey as Hellenic civilization had penetrated. From this extensive research, he draws a number of novel revisionist conclusions on the nature of classical theatre architecture and production. The original orchestra shape, for example, was a rectangle or trapezoid rather than a circle. The altar sat along the edge of the orchestra, not at its middle. The scene house was originally designed for a performance event that did not use an up center door. The crane and ekkyklema were simple devices, while the periaktoi probably did not exist before the Renaissance. Greek theatres were not built with attention to Vitruvius' injunction against a southern orientation and were probably sun-sited on the basis of seasonal touring. The Greeks arrived at the theatre around mid-morning, not in the cold light of dawn. Only the three-actor rule emerges from this eclectic examination somewhat intact, but with the division of roles reconsidered upon the basis of the actors' performance needs. Ashby also proposes methods that can be employed in future studies of Greek theatre. Final chapters examine the three-actor production of Ion, how one should not approach theatre history, and a shining example of how one should. Ashby's lengthy hands-on training and his knowledge of theatre history provide a broad understanding of the ways that theatre has operated through the ages as well as an ability to extrapolate from production techniques of other times and places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Freud's Lost Chord, Dan Sapen explores what it means for the development of depth psychology that Freud was perplexed by music, and unlike nearly every other aspect of human life, had little to say about it - a problem shared by most others in the early generations of psychoanalytic thought. Psychoanalyst Charles Rycroft wrote One cannot help regretting that none of the pioneers of the unconscious thought naturally in auditory terms; more than this, over 100 years later, not only is music per se rarely looked it in psychodynamic terms, jazz music is almost completely absent from the literature. Dr. Sapen looks in depth at the intricate details of psychodynamic theory and practice, as well as an overview of its development, to address the possibility that a theoretical model that has little to say about such a basic and omni-present aspect of human life must be seriously flawed in its effort to explain what it is to be human, and how the mind functions and what it creates. However, Sapen illustrates how numerous other thinkers (Jung, Winnicott, Bion, Loewald, Rycroft), some seemingly at odds with and others serving as essential developments and re-workings of psychoanalytic principles, have managed to illuminate and integrate those missing principles so basic to music and creativity - to development, dreaming, thinking, and relating among other human beings intimately and in a society. Nearly uniquely in the psychodynamic literature, Sapen looks in depth at the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane as examples of the living, breathing psychological processes so essential to understanding the meaning and dynamics of being human that Freud could not, for a variety of reasons, conceptualize.
