Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of the hundreds of bird species that have become extinct over the last 1,000 years of habitat degradation, over-hunting and rat introduction. Extinct Birds has become the standard text on this subject, covering both familiar icons of extinction as well as more obscure birds, some known from just one specimen or from travellers' tales. This second edition is expanded to include dozens of new species, as more are constantly added to the list, either through extinction or through new subfossil discoveries. The book is the result of decades of research into literature and museum drawers, as well as caves and subfossil deposits, which often reveal birds long-gone that disappeared without ever being recorded by scientists while they lived. From Great Auks, Carolina Parakeets and Dodos to the amazing yet almost completely vanished bird radiations of Hawaii and New Zealand via rafts of extinction in the Pacific and elsewhere, this book is both a sumptuous reference and astounding testament to humanity's devastating impact on wildlife.

Book Extinct and Vanishing Birds of the World

Download or read book Extinct and Vanishing Birds of the World written by James Cowan Greenway and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since the disappearance of the last dodo some 280 years ago, over 130 species and subspecies of birds have completely disappeared or have become seriously threatened with extinction. The passenger pigeon, Labrador duck, great auk, the nearly extinct ivory-billed woodpecker and whooping crane are but a few of the many varieties of parrot, owl, thrush, honeycreeper, duck, sparrow, etc., which have been wiped out, usually due to man's interference. Greenway's book is the first up-to-date, comprehensive survey of extinct and vanishing birds, and, as such, it serves as a strong warning about steps which must be taken to prevent the total disappearance of the threatened species. He begins with an area-by-area survey of important lost and disappearing birds, carefully noting all possible causes for their disappearance. Then, each species and subspecies is discussed individually, with detailed information on nomenclature, last sightings, range, description, habits, and similar material." --Back cover.

Book excerpt: Since 1600 some 80 bird species have become extinct. The author has drawn on a wide range of sources for his accounts of these birds, their habits and demise, with evidence of preserved specimens brought to life by the eye-witness accounts of early travellers and explorers. Their stories are sometimes tantalisingly slight: isolated sightings of a single bird may be the only evidence that a species ever existed. By contrast, the expeditions of Nineteenth Century naturalists are often welldocumented and their descriptions accompanied by detailed drawings and paintings. In more recent cases our knowledge about an extinct species can be so extensive that even the precise time and place of death of its last surviving member is recorded. Virtually all of the species documented here are illustrated with colour plates from archival sources, including the work of such acknowledged masters as Audubon, Keulemans and Lear. These artists often had the advantage of working from fresh specimens or even from living birds, and besides its beauty their work is a primary source of scientific knowledge in its own right. Where no appropriate picture exists, new paintings have been produced especially for the book. The stories of these birds are sometimes fantastic, often touching and humorous, but ultimately sad. Extinct Birds is a fascinating record of those species of birds which have been unable to adapt and survive, and a timely reminder of the human capacity to change the environment for the worse.

Book excerpt: "The Great Auk, the Japanese Wolf, the Atlas Bear, the Cape Lion, the Elephant Bird, the Mauritius Giant Tortoise -- these are among the hundreds of beautiful birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish which the world will never see again. David Day and four leading wildlife artists have worked from expert research, museum records and contemporary sketches and notes, to recreate for the modern reader these beautiful and sometimes extraordinary creatures. The author's immediate and startling text describes the combination of cruelty, startling thoughtlessness and sheer commercial greed that largely led to the extinction of these species. His highly readable descriptions of each animal's appearance, behaviour and habitat, complemented by the authentic, breathtaking illustrations provide a dramatic historical record. David Day documents for the first time the extinction of almost 300 species and subspecies over the last 300 years. It is a fact that the rate of extinction during the last three centuries has multiplied several hundred times its previous rate and is still increasing ... Therefore, alongside reference maps and classification listings, David Day gives a "waiting list" of 400 critically endangered species ..."--Inside front cover

Book excerpt: A photograph of an animal long-gone evokes a feeling of loss more than a painting ever can. Often tinted sepia or black-and-white, these images were mainly taken in zoos or wildlife parks, and in a handful of cases featured the last known individual of the species. There are some familiar examples, such as Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon, or the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, recently fledged and perching happily on the hat of one of the biologists that had just ringed it. But for every Martha there are a number of less familiar extinct birds and mammals that were caught on camera prior to their demise. The photographic record of extinction is the focus of this remarkable book, written by the world's leading authority on vanished animals, Errol Fuller. Lost Animals features photographs dating from around 1870 to as recently as 2004, the year that saw the demise of the Hawaiian Po'ouli. From a mother Thylacine and her pups to now-extinct birds such as the Heath Hen and Carolina Parakeet, Fuller tells the tale of each animal, why it became extinct, and discusses the circumstances surrounding the photography itself, in a book rich with unique images. The photographs themselves are poignant and compelling. They provide a tangible link to animals that have now vanished forever, in a book that brings the past to life while delivering a warning for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone is familiar with the dodo and the wooly mammoth, but how many people have heard of the scimitar cat and the Falkland Island fox? Extinct Animals portrays over 60 remarkable animals that have been lost forever during the relatively recent geological past. Each entry provides a concise discussion of the history of the animal—how and where it lived, and how it became extinct—as well as the scientific discovery and analysis of the creature. In addition, this work examines what led to extinction—from the role of cyclical swings in the Earth's climate to the spread of humans and their activities. Many scientists believe that we are in the middle of a mass extinction right now, caused by the human undermining of the earth's complex systems that support life. Understanding what caused the extinction of animals in the past may help us understand and prevent the extinction of species in the future. Extinct Animals examines the biology and history of some of the most interesting creatures that have ever lived, including: The American Terror Bird, which probably became extinct over 1 million years ago, who were massive predators, some of which were almost 10 feet tall; the Rocky Mountain Locust, last seen in 1902, formed the most immense animal aggregations ever known, with swarms estimated to include over 10 trillion insects; the Giant Ground Sloth, which was as large as an elephant; and the Neandertals, the first Europeans, which co-existed with prehistoric Homo sapiens. Extinct Animals includes illustrations—many created for the work—that help the reader visualize the extinct creature, and each entry concludes with a list of resources for those who wish to do further research.

One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are currently facing the sixth mass extinction of species in the history of life on Earth, biologists claim—the first one caused by humans. Heise argues that understanding these stories and symbols is indispensable for any effective advocacy on behalf of endangered species. More than that, she shows how biodiversity conservation, even and especially in its scientific and legal dimensions, is shaped by cultural assumptions about what is valuable in nature and what is not.
