Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of the effect of the American Civil War on Britain's raw cotton trade and on the Liverpool cotton market. It includes an analysis of primary sources never used by historians. Before the civil war, America supplied 80 per cent of Britain's cotton. In August 1861, this fell to almost zero, where it remained for four years. Despite increased supplies from elsewhere, Britain's largest industry received only 36 per cent of the raw material it needed from 1862-64. This book establishes the facts of Britain's raw cotton supply during the war: how much there was of it, in absolute terms and related to the demand, where it came from and why, how much it cost, and what effect the reduced supply had on Britain's cotton manufacture. It includes an enquiry into the causes of the Lancashire cotton famine, which contradicts the historical consensus on the subject. Examining the impact of the civil war on Liverpool and its raw cotton market, this thought-provoking book demonstrates how reckless speculation infested and distorted the market, and lays bare the shadowy world of the Liverpool cotton brokers, who profited hugely from the war while the rest of Lancashire starved.

  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book The Thread written by Ronald L. Dart and published by . This book was released on 2006-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a thread that runs from the beginning to the end of the Bible that few seem to understand. There are specific points along that thread where God chose to act in history. In the Bible, these are called, "the appointments" of God. Because they occurred in connection with events in Jewish history, the days took on the meaning of those events. But then came Jesus, and the great events of his life and work also took place on these appointments. Moreover, the future plans of Christ are also reflected in these appointments along the thread. Traditional beliefs say that the festivals came in with the old covenant and went out with the cross. But as you follow The Thread, you will find that explanation will not hold. The feasts we find in the Bible are transcendent, and from the very beginning pointed, not so much at Israel's history, but at the work and ministry of Jesus Christ in history. As you pick up The Thread and follow it, things will become clearer. The Festivals of Jehovah mark places where we can most easily find The Thread. You will understand how each of God's holidays points to Christ and impacts your life. Understanding this will simplify the Bible and deepen your understanding. This is a book you will read again and again and share with others.

Book The Blank Swan

Download or read book The Blank Swan written by Elie Ayache and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-05-05 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: October 19th 1987 was a day of huge change for the global finance industry. On this day the stock market crashed, the Nobel Prize winning Black-Scholes formula failed and volatility smiles were born, and on this day Elie Ayache began his career, on the trading floor of the French Futures and Options Exchange. Experts everywhere sought to find a model for this event, and ways to simulate it in order to avoid a recurrence in the future, but the one thing that struck Elie that day was the belief that what actually happened on 19th October 1987 is simply non reproducible outside 19th October 1987 - you cannot reduce it to a chain of causes and effects, or even to a random generator, that can then be reproduced or represented in a theoretical framework. The Blank Swan is Elie's highly original treatise on the financial markets presenting a totally revolutionary rethinking of derivative pricing and technology. It is not a diatribe against Nassim Taleb's The Black Swan, but criticises the whole background or framework of predictable and unpredictable events white and black swans alike , i.e. the very category of prediction. In this revolutionary book, Elie redefines the components of the technology needed to price and trade derivatives. Most importantly, and drawing on a long tradition of philosophy of the event from Henri Bergson to Gilles Deleuze, to Alain Badiou, and on a recent brand of philosophy of contingency, embodied by the speculative materialism of Quentin Meillassoux, Elie redefines the market itself against the common perceptions of orthodox financial theory, general equilibrium theory and the sociology of finance. This book will change the way that we think about derivatives and approach the market. If anything, derivatives should be renamed contingent claims, where contingency is now absolute and no longer derivative, and the market is just its medium. The book also establishes the missing link between quantitative modelling (no longer dependent on probability theory but on a novel brand of mathematics which Elie calls the mathematics of price) and the reality of the market.

Book Surviving Sibling Loss The Invisible Thread that Connects Us Through Life and Death

Download or read book Surviving Sibling Loss The Invisible Thread that Connects Us Through Life and Death written by Dawn DiRaimondo, Psy.D. and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world that doesn’t understand or want to talk much about grief, losing a sibling changes someone forever. Grieving siblings often feel very alone, as much of the focus and support is geared toward their parents. With limited vocabulary to express grief, people can be left with the feeling that a piece of them has died too.

In 2004, clinical psychologist, Dawn DiRaimondo, suddenly lost her 22-year-old brother, Michael, who was serving as a flight medic in Iraq when his helicopter was shot down. This life-altering event compelled Dr. DiRaimondo to build a practice specializing in helping her clients through the most difficult of losses: children, young parents, siblings, and spouses. Surviving Sibling Loss interweaves both her story of losing her own brother with clinical insights into the impact of significant grief and loss in one’s life. This book will help surviving siblings feel validated and understood, as well as provide a number of ways to both cope, and honor their sibling. Surviving Sibling Loss is powerful, raw and heartfelt. It’s a must-have resource for anyone who has lost a sibling and for the people in their life—partners, friends, parents, even clinicians—who want to better support them.

Such regret can hinder emotional growth and create wounds that affect all other aspects of our lives. But loss doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a connection with a loved one. In fact, it can open the doors to a unique relationship that offers intimacy, healing, and renewal. In The Infinite Thread, author Alexandra Kennedy helps us deal with loss in a powerful new way: by using active imagination, letters, and inner dialogue to re-create and heal past relationships. In doing so, we also amend the often-strained ties with those still living. The Infinite Thread strips away the veils of mystery surrounding death and transcends preconceptions about death and dying. Rich with opportunities for reflection, it brings enormous comfort to anyone who has ever lost a loved one or been faced with their own mortality.
