Book The Alexandria You Are Losing

Download or read book The Alexandria You Are Losing written by Yasser El-Sayed and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alexandria You Are Losing and Other Stories explores universal themes of dislocation and uprooting; American and Arab characters yearning for a home they have forsaken, or for a more palpable sense of identity and belonging. The stories also illuminate the common threads that connect us as human beings, the bridges we form one to the other despite conflict and misperceptions. We see an American experience, whether one is a recent immigrant or not, infused with migration, transience and displacement. The stories in this collection capture in a genuinely universal manner that sense of not belonging, of being "un-housed" in some way, and searching for a place in the world.

Book excerpt: THE UNTETHERED is a philosophical techno-thriller that spans the globe, weaving five seemingly unrelated characters into a web of impossible conflict and unlikely friendship. And while they battle against their own internal demons in an attempt to achieve their selfish pursuits, the self-righteous mobs of the world are closing in to stop them. The characters: Juvenile delinquent, Roble Santos, chases his radical vision to build the most controversial aircraft in history---but with the threat of betrayal, prison, and death all around, he's running out of time. Political star, Alexandria Patra, rises to the envy of the masses---yet to reach the top she is forced to decide between what everyone expects and her long-abandoned childhood dream. Rogue geneticist, Stock Brant, reinvents nature in order to save the very world he hates---unaware the price of his plan may be his own soul. Savant tennis player, Nicolette Popov, employs precise mathematics and youthful spunk to become the best player in the world---but unwilling to follow the rules off the court, she risks everything she fought to achieve. Manga artist, Danny Sands, goes to the ends of the earth to make his father proud---blind to the reality his submission may cost everything and everyone he ever held dear. When all five lives collide beneath the streets of Las Vegas, each must make a choice---and none of them will ever be the same again. ----------------------- "A thought-provoking novel that will appeal to fans of Atlas Shrugged."---BookBub. bookbub.com/books/the-untethered-by-s-w-southwick ----------------------- Quote from the back cover: Alexandria counted her shallow breaths. "Roble, what...what is it you need?" He pulled his arrowhead out from his shirt and rubbed it. "I don't need to hear how scary the world is and how I shouldn't try anything. I don't need to know how much suffering there is out there," he pointed out the window, "or how bad I should feel about it. What I need..." he looked up, his grey eyes pleading, "...is to see someone who is still happy after growing up." Lowering his head, he added, "I need to see living, Ms. Patra, because I actually want to live." ----------------------- Quote from inside: The East China Sea glistened like an endless glass sheet. The F-22 Raptor Super Kai flashed just above its surface, ripping twin aerated water plumes into the air. A grey destroyer sat broadside in the water just ahead. Roble hurtled toward its bow without slowing. Crossing above the ship, the jet's sonic shockwave rocked sailors to the deck as if Roble's soul had exploded through their bodies. Sea spray from the wake doused the ship's hull like an exclamation point. ----------------------- Advisory: This novel contains sex, drugs, and fighter jets.

Book excerpt: A blend of memoir, history, and travelogue exploring the ancient Egyptian city on the eve of the Arab Spring: “Fresh and original . . . quietly virtuosic.” —The Wall Street Journal Blending aspects of memoir, history, and travel narrative into an elegant and unique tapestry, Peter Stothard uses the sights and sounds of the ancient city to reconnect with the experiences that shaped him and sparked a passionate interest in the life of Cleopatra. Melancholy, yet often humorous, Alexandria probingly deconstructs the enigma of modern Egypt—with its uneasy mix of classical touchstones and increasingly volatile Middle Eastern politics—and offers a firsthand glimpse into the fracturing state just before the Tahrir Square uprising and the start of the Arab Spring. Includes photographs “A thoroughly enjoyable combination of history, autobiography, travel and general musings about Alexandria . . . Don’t try to categorize this book; just read it and let it flow over you.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A chance trip to Alexandria and a lifelong love affair with Cleopatra coalesce . . . Staying in Alexandria’s Metropole Hotel and guided through the city by the at turns effusive and secretive Socratis and Mahmoud, Stothard relates not only his encounters with the remnants of Cleopatra throughout Alexandria but also the origins of his fascination with the Egyptian queen.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Writing Cyprus

Download or read book Writing Cyprus written by Bahriye Kemal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bahriye Kemal's ground-breaking new work serves as the first study of the literatures of Cyprus from a postcolonial and partition perspective. Her book explores Anglophone, Hellenophone and Turkophone writings from the 1920s to the present. Drawing on Yi-Fu Tuan’s humanistic geography and Henri Lefebvre’s Marxist philosophy, Kemal proposes a new interdisciplinary spatial model, at once theoretical and empirical, that demonstrates the power of space and place in postcolonial partition cases. The book shows the ways that place and space determine identity so as to create identifications; together these places, spaces and identifications are always in production. In analysing practices of writing, inventing, experiencing, reading, and construction, the book offers a distinct ‘solidarity’ that captures the ‘truth of space’ and place for the production of multiple-mutable Cypruses shaped by and for multiple-mutable selves, ending in a 'differential’ Cyprus, Mediterranean, and world. Writing Cyprus offers not only a nuanced understanding of the actual and active production of colonialism, postcolonialism and partition that dismantles the dominant binary legacy of historical-political deadlock discourse, but a fruitful model for understanding other sites of conflict and division

Book Levant

  • Author : Philip Mansel
  • Publisher : John Murray
  • Release : 2010-11-11
  • ISBN : 1848544626
  • Pages : 730 pages

Download or read book Levant written by Philip Mansel and published by John Murray. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Levant is a book of cities. It describes the role of Smyrna, Alexandria and Beirut as windows on the world, escapes from nationality and tradition, centres of wealth, pleasure and freedom. By their mix of races and religions, they challenge stereotypes. France and Britain liberated the area through their schools, while conquering it through arms. They were not only manipulators but manipulated, often invited in by local factions. Smyrna, Alexandria and Beirut were both pacifiers and stimulants of nationalism. Nasser was born in Alexandria, Smyrna and Beirut became centres of Turkish and Arab nationalism. Using unpublished family papers Philip Mansel describes their colourful, contradictory history, from the beginning of the French alliance with the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century to their decline in the mid twentieth century. Smyrna was burnt; Alexandria Egyptianised; Beirut lacerated by civil war. Levant is the first history in English of these cities in the modern age. Levant is also a challenge from history. It is about ourselves; it shows how Muslims, Christians and Jews live together in cities. Levantine compromises, putting deals befor ideals, pragmatism before ideology, made these cities work, until states reclaimed them for nationalism. Smyrna, Alexandria and Beirut have a message for today. The new Levantine cities of the twenty-first century, with comparable mixes of races and religions, are London, Paris and New York.
