Book The First Description of Cincinnati and Other Ohio Settlements

Download or read book The First Description of Cincinnati and Other Ohio Settlements written by John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work makes this translation of The First Description of Cincinnati and Other Ohio Settlements available for the first time. Johann Heckewelder recorded this description in 1792-93 as he traveled down the Ohio River, and then published this report in 1797 in Germany. H. A. Rattermann discovered the work a century ago, translated the work, but never published it. Almost a century after Rattermann's work with the manuscript, Tolzmann "rediscovered" the work in the Rattermann Collection of German-American Manuscripts in the Illinois Historical Survey, University of Illinois-Urbana. This work is the edited version of Rattermann's translation and introduction. It provides a vivid description of the early settlement of Cincinnati and the mode of life, manners, and characteristics of the early pioneers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over-the-Rhine is a place where a building owner can stumble upon huge caverns underneath a basement floor or find long-forgotten tunnels that travel far below city streets. ts present mysteries are attributable to a past that transcends the common story of how cities change over time: it is the story of how a clash between immigrants and "real Americans" helped rob Cincinnati of its image, its soul and its economy. In the 1870s, OTR was comparable to the cultural hearts of Paris and Vienna. By the turn of the last century, the neighborhood was home to roughly three hundred saloons and had over a dozen breweries within or adjacent to its borders. It was beloved by countless citizens and travelers for the exact reasons that others successfully sought to destroy it. This is the story of how the heart of the "Paris of America" became a time capsule.

Book Ohio s Founding Fathers

Download or read book Ohio s Founding Fathers written by Fred Milligan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory, warned friends in Congress that the frontier settlers of Ohio were too indigent and ignorant to form a constitution and government for themselves. This is the story of the men who proved him wrong. The author describes the beginning of Ohio through the lives of its founding fathers. Founding fathers include the thirty-five delegates to the convention held in Chillicothe in November, 1802, which decided that Ohio should become a state and then drafted its first constitution, as well as twenty additional men whose activities before and after the convention round out the story of the state's beginning. Revolutionary War veterans, Indian fighters, eastern aristocrats, Appalachian mountain men, and immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, and England combined their talents to lay the foundation for one of the greatest states in the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deep dive into the complex history of the Queen City, Cincinnati, Ohio, from after the American Revolution to today. So many colorful stories are lost to time. The last passenger pigeon on earth, Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. Just outside the city, a young Annie Oakley beat her future husband in a shooting contest. The deadliest maritime disaster in American history was the explosion of the steamboat Sultana, built in the Queen City. The nation's first train robbery occurred in the Cincinnati area, and some clever victims hid jewelry in their hair and bodices. From the Black Brigade's role in protecting the city against Confederate siege to the original 1937 Cincinnati Bengals, author Jeff Suess reveals the triumphs and tribulations of the first major American city founded after the American Revolution.

Book Cincinnati Food A History of Queen City Cuisine

Download or read book Cincinnati Food A History of Queen City Cuisine written by Polly Campbell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the years, Cincinnati has earned a reputation for conservatism and keeping to itself, especially regarding food, but that's changing. Old favorites like cinnamon-scented chili on spaghetti, ice cream with huge chocolate chunks and old-fashioned German butchers selling goetta, brats and metts are being rediscovered--and in some cases re-created. A similar urge for experimentation and innovation from restaurants, farmers' markets and food producers is bringing new energy to the city's tables. Gathering the stories of the pioneers and the entrepreneurs of the past and the present, Enquirer food critic Polly Campbell unfolds how Cincinnati's history has set the table for its menu today."--Amazon website.
