Book The Cosmic Race La Raza Cosmica

Download or read book The Cosmic Race La Raza Cosmica written by José Vasconcelos and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1997-08-13 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this influential 1925 essay, presented here in Spanish and English, José Vasconcelos predicted the coming of a new age, the Aesthetic Era, in which joy, love, fantasy, and creativity would prevail over the rationalism he saw as dominating the present age. In this new age, marriages would no longer be dictated by necessity or convenience, but by love and beauty; ethnic obstacles, already in the process of being broken down, especially in Latin America, would disappear altogether, giving birth to a fully mixed race, a "cosmic race," in which all the better qualities of each race would persist by the natural selection of love.

Book excerpt: Father Nazario Zajarín leads a life of uncompromised humility, loving others and living among the poorest citizens. Life changes for the pious protagonist when his forgiveness extends to sinners that pull Nazarín over to the other side of the law in the eyes of society. Scorned, mocked, and spurned by others, his faith is tested and his bond with the Catholic Church is broken when he rejects political dogma. A tightly written story about living in the trenches of society's shortcomings, the book is an insightful challenge of religion under late 19th-century Spanish rule worthy of inclusion in moral discussions still today.

Book excerpt: Annotation Galdós' early writings were inspired by the French writer Emile Zola, a practitioner of the literary school of naturalism. This interest then turned to a type of spiritual naturalism under the influence of Russian writers, including Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Turgenev, whom he called his 'great teacher.' One of his most important works during this period was 'Halma', the story of an aristocratic lady who decides to use her inheritance to found an idyllic Christian society for the sick and the needy. This book examines Galdós' influential novel.

Book Alternating Current

Download or read book Alternating Current written by Octavio Paz and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its front-page review of Alternating Current, The New York Times Book Review called Octavio Paz “an intellectual literary one-man band” for his ability to write incisively and with dazzling originality about a wide range of subjects. This collection of his essays is divided into three parts. Part 1 sets forth his credo as an artist and poet, steeped in his knowledge of world literature and Mexican art and history and buttressed by readings of writers from Mexican poet Luis Cernuda to D. H. Lawrence, Malcolm Lowry, André Breton, and Carlos Fuentes. Part 2 deals with themes such as Western individualism versus plurality and flux in Eastern philosophy, atheism versus belief, nihilism, liberated man, and versions of paradise. In Part 3, Paz writes of politics and ethics in essays on revolt and revolution, existentialism, Marxism, the third world, and the new face of Latin America. A scintillating thinker and a prescient voice on emerging world culture, Paz reveals himself here as “a man of electrical passions, paradoxical visions, alternating currents of thoughts, and feeling that runs hot but never cold” (Christian Science Monitor).

  • Release : 2024-10-21T20:31:09Z
  • ISBN :

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noli Me Tangere takes place towards the end of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. It deals with the corruption that had worked its way into the church and governing authorities over the centuries. The title, Latin for “touch me not,” is a reference to the passage in the Gospel of John, where the resurrected Jesus tells Mary Magdalene not to cling to him. It also refers to types of cancer sores that are very painful and irritated by touch, serving as a metaphor for the state of Philippine society that Rizal perceived. Crisóstomo Ibarra returns from Europe after years of study, shortly after the death of his father. He plans to marry his childhood sweetheart, María Clara, and to open a school in his hometown. Crisóstomo is a hopeful idealist, believing that the Filipinos can improve their situation if given a proper education. But a friend warns him that he will make enemies by undertaking such a project—and in fact, he already has enemies. Soon past secrets emerge, and Crisóstomo must deal with unnamed forces working against him. Together with its sequel, El Filibusterismo, Noli Me Tangere indirectly influenced Philippine revolutionary sentiment to such an extent that Rizal was exiled and subsequently executed by the Spanish government. Both novels were long banned in the Philippines, but today are required reading for students, with Rizal considered a national hero. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book The Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry

Download or read book The Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry written by T. S. Eliot and published by HMH. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famed series of Trinity College and Johns Hopkins lectures in which the Nobel Prize winner explored history, poetry, and philosophy. While a student at Harvard in the early years of the twentieth century, T. S. Eliot immersed himself in the verse of Dante, Donne, and the nineteenth-century French poet Jules Laforgue. His study of the relation of thought and feeling in these poets led Eliot, as a poet and critic living in London, to formulate an original theory of the poetry generally termed “metaphysical”—philosophical and intellectual poetry that revels in startlingly unconventional imagery. Eliot came to perceive a gradual “disintegration of the intellect” following three “metaphysical moments” of European civilization—the thirteenth, seventeenth, and nineteenth centuries. The theory is at once a provocative prism through which to view Western intellectual and literary history and an exceptional insight into Eliot’s own intellectual development. This annotated edition includes the eight Clark Lectures on metaphysical poetry that Eliot delivered at Trinity College in Cambridge in 1926, and their revision and extension for his three Turnbull Lectures at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1933. They reveal in great depth the historical currents of poetry and philosophy that shaped Eliot’s own metaphysical moment in the twentieth century.
