Book excerpt: Federico GARCÍA LORCA (1898-1936), nacido en Fuente Vaqueros, provincia de Granada y asesinado el 19 de agosto de 1936 por milicias franquistas. Estudió en las universidades de Granada y Madrid, ciudad esta última donde se instalará en la Residencia de Estudiantes. En ella conocerá Buñuel, Dalí, Alberti y otros escritores. Su primera colección poética "Libro de poemas" apareció en1921. Siguió "Romancero gitano" (1928), con el cual alcanzó una extraordinaria popularidad. En 1929 viajó a Nueva-York y de las impresiones de esta visita surgió "Poeta en Nueva-York". Seguidamente su interés se dirige principalmente hacia el teatro, género al que se inicia con "Mariana Pineda". En 1932 crea el Teatro Universitario "La Barraca" con la finalidad de hacer llegar las obras clásicas a todo el mundo, incluso a los pueblos más apartados. Su teatro alcanza una altura similar a la de su obra poética y constituye una de las cumbres de la dramática española moderna. El 16 de julio de 1936 viaja de Madrid a Granada, donde es detenido y fusilado un mes después.

These poems were written in 1935, but were not published until after his death by the ABC Spanish newspaper on the 17th of March 1984, (clandestine editions were released before this date). This bilingual edition includes vintage images to get a better understanding of the romantic love he had for Ramirez de Lucas, together with explanations and comments for each sonnet. Lorca did not go to Mexico on exile (despite warnings that he may be killed) because Ramirez de Lucas' family refused him permission to travel with Lorca abroad. Ramirez de Lucas was under 21, and in Spain, at the time, you could not legally travel without parental permission.

Writing across Cultures is his comprehensive analysis of the varied sources of Latin American literature. In Writing across Cultures, Rama extends the Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortiz's theory of transculturation far beyond Cuba, bringing it to bear on regional cultures across Latin America, where new cultural arrangements have been forming among indigenous, African, and European societies for the better part of five centuries. Rama applies this concept to the work of the Peruvian novelist, poet, and anthropologist José María Arguedas, whose writing drew on both Spanish and Quechua, Peru's two major languages and, by extension, cultures. Yet few attempts to analyze the so-called Classic Style have embraced the semiotic implications of this condition. Playing with Signs proposes a listener-oriented theory of Classic instrumental music that encompasses its two most fundamental communicative dimensions: expression and structure. Units of expression, defined in reference to topoi, are shown here to interact with, confront, and merge into units of structure, defined in terms of the rhetorical conventions of beginning, continuing, and ending. The book draws on examples from works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven to show that the explicitly referential, even theatrical, surface of Classic music derives from a play with signs. Although addressed primarily to readers interested in musical analysis, the book opens up fruitful avenues for further research into musical semiotics, aesthetics, and Classicism. Since the 1960s, the Catholic Church has acted as a mediator during social and political change in many Latin American countries, especially the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Although the Catholic clergy was called in during political crises in all five countries, the situation in the Dominican Republic was especially notable because the Church's role as mediator was eventually institutionalized. Because the Dominican state was persistently weak, the Church was able to secure the support of the Balaguer regime (1966-1978) and ensure social and political cohesion and stability. Emelio Betances analyzes the particular circumstances that allowed the Church in the Dominican Republic to accommodate the political and social establishment; the Church offered non-partisan political mediation, rebuilt its ties with the lower echelons of society, and responded to the challenges of the evangelical movement. The author's historical examination of church-state relations in the Dominican Republic leads to important regional comparisons that broaden our understanding of the Catholic Church in the whole of Latin America.

Showing that this history is best appreciated in a comparative perspective, The Long, Lingering Shadow looks at the parallel legal histories of race relations in the United States, Brazil, and Spanish America. Robert J. Cottrol takes the reader on a journey from the origins of New World slavery in colonial Latin America to current debates and litigation over affirmative action in Brazil and the United States, as well as contemporary struggles against racial discrimination and Afro-Latin invisibility in the Spanish-speaking nations of the hemisphere. Ranging across such topics as slavery, emancipation, scientific racism, immigration policies, racial classifications, and legal processes, Cottrol unravels a complex odyssey. By the eve of the Civil War, the U.S. slave system was rooted in a legal and cultural foundation of racial exclusion unmatched in the Western Hemisphere. That system’s legacy was later echoed in Jim Crow, the practice of legally mandated segregation. Jim Crow in turn caused leading Latin Americans to regard their nations as models of racial equality because their laws did not mandate racial discrimination— a belief that masked very real patterns of racism throughout the Americas. And yet, Cottrol says, if the United States has had a history of more-rigid racial exclusion, since the Second World War it has also had a more thorough civil rights revolution, with significant legal victories over racial discrimination. Cottrol explores this remarkable transformation and shows how it is now inspiring civil rights activists throughout the Americas.
