Download or read book Mining Memory written by Mary Beth Tierney-Tello and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every major Peruvian author of the twentieth century has written a narrative focused on childhood or coming of age. Mining Memory argues that Peruvian narratives of the twentieth century re-imagine childhood not only to document personal pasts, but also to focus on national identity as a dynamic and incomplete process. Mining Memory shows how 20th-century narratives and films reimagine the self and the nation by representing child and adolescent protagonists and their evolution, using the remembrance of childhood as part of a nation-making project. The book demonstrates how, in the context of Peru, fictions focusing on childhood become vehicles for the national reimagining and collective remembering central to much of Latin American literature. The figure of the child, as emblem of both a collective memory and an always deferred utopian project, holds special promise for twentieth-century Peruvian writers as they write from a national context rife with cultural, racial and political conflict. The book intervenes in debates internal to Peruvian cultural studies as well as wider conversations in Latin American Studies and post-colonial studies. Mining Memory provides a new understanding to both the Latin American and Anglo-American traditions regarding the representations of national subjectivities through the voices of the child and adolescent. Such a representational strategy performs a very particular kind of hybridity and temporal balancing act capable of addressing the very issues of cultural memory and fractured identities so relevant to multi-cultural, post-colonial cultural contexts.

Book Walking Away

Download or read book Walking Away written by Alexander B. Pratt and published by IAP. This book was released on 2024-09-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walking away is both refusal and production (Tuck & Yang, 2014), a seeming paradox taken up in work on fugitivity and marronage (Diouf, 2021; Grant, Woodson, & Dumas, 2021; Harney & Moten, 2013; Hartman, 2007), survivance (Powell, 2002; Sabzalian, 2019; Vizenor, 2008), testimonios (Calderon-Berumen, 2021; Delgado Bernal, Burciaga, & Flores Carmona, 2012; Latina Feminist Group, 2001), and other forms of critical pedagogy and curriculum. In other words, walking away presumes both the rejection of a form of status quo (walking away from something) and a new direction taken (a walking toward something else). In the context of education, many teachers and researchers have reached that breaking point where/when no more curricular/pedagogic violence can be survived, and it is in that moment that those researchers and teachers actively remove themselves from those systems and assert new courses with new possibilities. This edited volume is a collection of works chronicling acts of refusal that manifest as walking away. In some cases what is walked away from is the erasure of experience in curriculum while in others it is a fundamentalist religious experience. In still other cases what is walked away from is the carceral nature of school discipline policies. In each case walking away is resistance, refusal, and re/co-producing new possibilities and agencies. What is walked toward is a new curriculum/pedagogy of resistance sometimes within and sometimes without that place ENDORSEMENTS: "Walking Away provides a window into what it is for educators to form a new world: Enter Walking Away and walk into..." — Leonard Harris , Purdue University "Walking away is sure to inspire pre-service educators, practicing teachers, and others to participate in the construction of more just and equitable worlds." — Tristan Gleason, Cal Poly Humbolt "Ultimately, Walking Away represents the capacious thinking that emerges from the various connections, conversations, and profound contributions of each author." — Boni Wozolek, Pennsylvania State University, Abington Campus "This important book insists that we, as curriculum scholars, seriously ask ourselves what our roles and responsibilities are as academics, researchers, and educators in these dire times." — Jennifer A. Sandlin, Arizona State University

Book Grandma Rebecka and the Witches Tree

Download or read book Grandma Rebecka and the Witches Tree written by J Froebel-Parker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1692 is an annus horribilis on the American timeline which has been engraved on the hearts of men, inscribed in the annals of history, is remembered with sadness, and continues to admonish humanity about the ease with which those deemed as other can be persecuted and made to suffer. Rebecka Nurse, ne Towne (known to many as Rebecca Nurse from Arthur Millers The Crucible and the authors 11th maternal great grandmother) could claim Charlemagne, the Anglo-Saxon kings of England, and the noble family de Ferrers among her ancestors, but nothing could save her from the gallows which had been made of the Witches Tree in the ancient Wampanoag settlement called Naumkeag, now Salem. Her own second cousin, Roger Conant, had founded Salem after leaving Plymouth (Plimoth), which all at her trial knew. He, in turn, had fought with Myles Standish (a relative of both his and Rebeckas) the governor of Plymouth and the authors 9th maternal great grandfather. This turmoil, envy, and perhaps even boredom, intertwine like the gnarled branches of the ancient tree which gives this story its title.
