Book excerpt: The degree of development reached by cooperatives of different sectors throughout the world, which among others led to the UN declaring 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, needs to be accompanied by a similar development of corresponding legislation. To this end, a better knowledge of cooperative law from the comparative point of view, as has already been established for other types of enterprises, becomes of great importance. This book strives to fill this gap, and is divided into four parts. The first part offers an analytic and conceptual framework with which to understand, study and assess cooperative law from a transnational and comparative perspective. The second part includes several chapters dealing with attempts to harmonize cooperative laws. The third part contains an overview of more than 30 national cooperative laws, while the last part summarizes and compares these national cooperative laws, thus laying the foundation for a comparative cooperative law doctrine.

En este bloque se abordan temas de tanto interés práctico como es el derecho de baja voluntaria de los socios y las cada vez mayores excepciones legales a su ejercicio, la posibilidad del articular el voto plural ponderado en la asamblea general, las prácticas de buen gobierno corporativo en el consejo rector, el régimen económico de las cooperativas y la dotación de fondos obligatorios, por poner sólo algunos ejemplos. En el bloque tercero de la obra se analizan por separado los nuevos principios que algunas leyes cooperativas autonómicas han reconocido recientemente en su articulado (sostenibilidad empresarial y medioambiental, fomento del empleo estable y de calidad, igualdad de género, etc.). Por último, el bloque cuarto trata de manera monográfica la relación entre los principios cooperativos y la fiscalidad de este tipo de entidades.

In the era of modern development, however, rural-urban migration intensified in an unprecedented way and many rural communities depopulated. While during the pre-industrial period migration had contributed to the economic and social reproduction of rural communities, it now challenged the continuity of the rural lifestyle. This book analyses the topic for the case of Spain, which in the twentieth century experienced one of the most intense processes of rural depopulation in modern Europe. The interaction between Spanish industrialisation and rural migration, the demographic implications of agrarian change, the obstacles to the development of rural non-farm activities, the rural problems of access to infrastructures and services, the role of public policy, and the consequences of depopulation for the rural community are the central elements of this study, which inserts the Spanish case within its European context. Distanced from both the anti-modern stance that idealises paradise lost and the Panglossian mood that welcomes anything that came with modernisation, the book explains how the adaptive strategies put into practice by rural populations led to a “peaceful surrender” of traditional rural society.

Care for Sale is an in-depth ethnography of a group of middle-class women from Latin America who exchange care and intimacy for money while working as domestic and sex workers in London.
