Book excerpt: This Fall 2010 (VIII, 2) issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge, entitled “Islam: From Phobia to Understanding,” includes the proceedings of an international conference on “Debating Islamophobia,” co-organized by the issue co-editors in Madrid, Spain, in May 2009. Beginning with the lead article by the late Nasr Abu-Zayd (1943-2010) from which the title of the issue is adopted, and to whose author this collection is dedicated in celebration of his life and work, the papers explore the nature and meaning of Islamophobia and its diverse unfolding in specific national and historical contexts. The covered themes are: “Religions: From Phobia to Understanding,” “Unconscious Islamophobia,” “Epistemic Islamophobia and Colonial Social Sciences,” “Islamophobia: a French Specificity in Europe?,” “Terror and the Politics of Containment: Analysing the Discourse of the ‘War on Terror’ and its Workings of Power” “Fundamentally Danish? The Muhammad Cartoon Crisis as Transitional Drama,” “Historiographic Narratives: The Discourse Strategies for Constructing Expellable “Moorish” Subjects,” “Islamophobia and Sexism: Muslim Women in the Western Mass Media,” “Discrepancies Around the Use of the Term ‘Islamophobia,'” and “The Homelessness of Muslimness: The Muslim Umma as a Diaspora.” The publication is an academic contribution to the study of Islamophobia, a tool for social researchers and useful to overcome the prejudices and institutional barriers that produce second-class citizens at the heart of Western Europe. Contributors include: Ramón Grosfoguel (also as journal issue guest editor), Gema Martín-Muñoz (also as journal issue guest editor), Nasr Abu-Zayd, Vincent Geisser, Farish A. Noor, Heiko Henkel, José María Perceval, Laura Navarro, Javier Rosón Lorente, S. Sayyid, and Mohammad H. Tamdgidi (also as journal editor-in-chief). Book The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise

Download or read book The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise written by Dario Fernandez-Morera and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finalist for World Magazine's Book of the Year! Scholars, journalists, and even politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain—"al-Andalus"—as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony. There is only one problem with this widely accepted account: it is a myth. In this groundbreaking book, Northwestern University scholar Darío Fernández-Morera tells the full story of Islamic Spain. The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise shines light on hidden history by drawing on an abundance of primary sources that scholars have ignored, as well as archaeological evidence only recently unearthed. This supposed beacon of peaceful coexistence began, of course, with the Islamic Caliphate's conquest of Spain. Far from a land of religious tolerance, Islamic Spain was marked by religious and therefore cultural repression in all areas of life and the marginalization of Christians and other groups—all this in the service of social control by autocratic rulers and a class of religious authorities. The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise provides a desperately needed reassessment of medieval Spain. As professors, politicians, and pundits continue to celebrate Islamic Spain for its "multiculturalism" and "diversity," Fernández-Morera sets the historical record straight—showing that a politically useful myth is a myth nonetheless.

Book The Power of Cities

Download or read book The Power of Cities written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of Cities focuses on Iberian cities during the lengthy transition from the late Roman to the early modern period, with a particular interest in the change from early Christianity to the Islamic period, and on to the restoration of Christianity. Drawing on case studies from cities such as Toledo, Cordoba, and Seville, it collects for the first time recent research in urban studies using both archaeological and historical sources. Against the common portrayal of these cities characterized by discontinuities due to decadence, decline and invasions, it is instead continuity – that is, a gradual transformation – which emerges as the defining characteristic. The volume argues for a fresh interpretation of Iberian cities across this period, seen as a continuum of structural changes across time, and proposes a new history of the Iberian Peninsula, written from the perspective of the cities. Contributors are Javier Arce, María Asenjo González, Antonio Irigoyen López, Alberto León Muñoz, Matthias Maser, Sabine Panzram, Gisela Ripoll, Torsten dos Santos Arnold, Isabel Toral-Niehoff, Fernando Valdés Fernández, and Klaus Weber.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles Taylor
  • Publisher : Editorial GEDISA
  • Release : 2015-04-15
  • ISBN : 8497848926
  • Pages : 722 pages

Download or read book La era secular written by Charles Taylor and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Se Puede Saber Si Dios Existe

Download or read book Se Puede Saber Si Dios Existe written by Hector Avalos and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This primer on biblical criticism and key problems in religion and philosophy is intended as an introduction to these complex subjects for Spanish-speaking laypersons with little or no prior scientific training in the area. Professor Avalos critically reviews the classic arguments for the existence of God, alleged miracles and faith-healing, the belief that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, problems of good and evil in the Bible, creation stories, biblical prophecy, the resurrection of Jesus, and many other topics. In the last part of the book, Avalos discusses the scientific worldview, especially as it impinges upon the question of the existence of God. A notes section allows readers to explore more deeply the areas touched on in the text; appendices provide information on the sources of many biblical stories and beliefs in Mesopotamian and other ancient Near Eastern cultures; and a final personal note briefly recounts the author''s experiences from his upbringing in fundamentalist Christianity to his current skeptical view. This informative volume is an excellent starting point for those who wish to explore with a minimum of resources basic questions in religion, philosophy, and biblical studies.
