Este libro se escribe con la principal y mejor intención de entretener y proporcionar una sonrisa a quien tenga la gentileza de leerlo. Y por qué no decirlo, como un llamado a considerar esta vida no como el objetivo fi nal de la existencia, sino más bien como un vehículo que nos llevará a un lugar eterno, el cual podemos escoger a nuestro propio albedrio, dependiendo de lo que hagamos día a día.

Una de ellas, todavia poco explorada, es la atribucion del Tratado sobre la redondez de la tierra. Este volumen indaga en las razones para la atribucion a Sor Maria de Jesus, considerando su dimension de imagen cultural y transoceanica que rebasa la individualidad concreta. Tratamos diferentes aspectos de la vida, la obra, el contexto cultural y la tradicion desde la que se la leyo y puede leerse tambien en el siglo XXI. El Tratado se enmarca en el espacio de produccion cultural femenina conventual, sin el que no puede entenderse la figura de la autora, ni la escritura de mujeres en la epoca, no solo observando los generos mas conocidos del convento, sino una tradicion todavia por recuperar: la del conocimiento cientifico, que, aunque presente entre sus muros, apenas ha recibido atencion critica.

Book excerpt: The cross-linguistic differences documented in studies of relative clause attachment offer an invaluable opportunity to examine a particular aspect of bilingual sentence processing: Do bilinguals process their two languages as if they were monolingual speakers of each? This volume provides a review of existing research on relative clause attachment, showing that speakers of languages like English attach relative clauses differently than do speakers of languages like Spanish. Fernández reports the findings of an investigation with monolinguals and bilinguals, tested using speeded ("on-line") and unspeeded ("off-line") methodology, with materials in both English and Spanish. The experiments reveal similarities across the groups when the procedure is speeded, but differences with unspeeded questionnaires: The monolinguals replicate the standard cross-linguistic differences, while bilinguals have language-independent preferences determined by language dominance — bilinguals process stimuli in either of their languages according to the general preferences of monolinguals of their dominant language.

Spanning the nineteenth century to the present day, the chapters offer an insight into the ways in which Latin American women have constructed themselves as modern subjects of the nation, and made use of the ambiguous spaces created by modernization and national discourses. The section starts firstly with a focus on the Southern Cone, covering Chile and Argentina, and then moves geographically northward, to Colombia and Bolivia. The second section, Models and Genres, consists of six chapters that examine how women writers engage with, and critically re-work, existing literary discourses and paradigms.
