Alexandre Dumas (Villers-Cotterêts, 1803-Puys, cerca de Dieppe, 1870) es uno de los autores más prolíficos y populares de la literatura europea. Hijo de un general a las órdenes de Napoleón, que más tarde llegaría a conspirar contra este. Sus comienzos literarios fueron en París, donde desde joven se sintió arrastrado por una intensa vocación hacia el teatro y el drama, y aunque escribió numerosas obras, su fama mundial la alcanzó con la novela histórica. Publicó un sinfín de títulos, convirtiéndose, según frase de Delarme, en «el más famoso de los folletinistas y en el más hábil falsificador de la Historia». Vendió libros a millones, llegando a manejar una enorme fortuna que no dudó en dilapidarse, pues es de sobra sabido que derrochó a manos llenas, en una vida de fastuoso escándalo: lujo, frenesí amoroso, banquetes y viajes fueron conduciendo a Dumas a la ruina total. Murió refugiado en casa de su hijo, también Alexandre, y autor de La dama de las camelias. Este, en una carta en la que describía la muerte de su padre, llegó a trazar, tal vez sin saberlo, la mejor y más sintética de sus semblanzas: «Ha muerto como ha vivido: sin darse cuenta». Manuel Moreno Alonso es catedrático de Historia Contemporánea en la Universidad de Sevilla. Historiador de la Guerra de la Independencia y del mundo napoleónico, es miembro de la International Napoleonic Society. Autor, entre otros libros, de una biografía de Napoleón (Napoleón. De ciudadano a emperador) y de su hermano José (José Bonaparte. Un republicano en el trono de España), así como de La verdadera historia del asedio napoleónico de Cádiz (1810-1812), ha realizado numerosas ediciones de texto de época. Ha prologado, entre otras obras, Los periódicos españoles de la Guerra de la Independencia de M. Gómez Ímaz, la Autobiografía de Palafox, Memorias de un boticario (Episodios de la Guerra de la Independencia) de S. Blaze, Memorias de un prisionero de guerra inglés en 1810 de A. T. It is neither opera nor serious drama, yet it requires both trained singers and good actors. The content is neither purely folkloric nor high art; it is too popular for some and too classical for others. In Zarzuela, Janet L. Sturman assesses the political as well as the musical significance of this chameleon of music-drama. Sturman traces the zarzuela's colorful history from its seventeenth-century origins as a Spanish court entertainment to its adaptation in Spain's colonial outposts in the New World. She examines Cuba's pivotal role in transmitting the zarzuela to Latin America and the Caribbean and draws distinctions among the ways in which various Spanish-speaking communities have reformulated zarzuela, combining elements of the Spanish model with local characters, music, dances, and political perspectives. The settings Sturman considers include Argentina, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the American cities of El Paso, Miami, and New York. This traditional view, writes Margaret Chowning, cannot account for the continued power of the Catholic Church in Mexico, which has withstood extensive and sustained political opposition for over a century. How, then, must the scholarly consensus change to better reflect Mexico's history? In this book, Chowning shows that the church repeatedly emerged as a political player, even when liberals won elections, primarily because of the overlooked importance of women in politics. Catholic women kept the church alive through the wars of independence and made it into the political force it continues to be in present-day Mexico. Using archival sources from ten Mexican states, the book shows how women, who were denied the vote and expected to stay out of the political sphere, nevertheless forged their own form of citizenship through the church. After Mexico gained its independence in 1821, women self-consciously developed new lay associations and assumed leadership roles within them. These new associations not only kept Catholicism vibrant, they also pushed women into public sphere. Methodologically, this book shows the value of exploring gender in political and religious history and reveals the equal importance of informal political power to more formal activities like voting"--

Book excerpt: Cultural modernity has habitually been defined as a focus on the means of representation themselves, as opposed to art that imitates external reality or expresses its maker's inner life. The crucial moment is usually considered the emergence of Edouard Manet in mid-nineteenth-century France, and the features of French developments have been seen as defining terms in the theory of modernity. However, recent art and cultural history have often spoken of plural modernities, distinct from the pattern set in France. For the first time, this study in cultural history explores how Spanish culture took a radical turn toward the medium of representation itself in the 1850s and early 1860s. It argues that this happened in a way that is critically at odds with many fundamental theoretical suppositions about modernity.
