Book The Music of Color

Download or read book The Music of Color written by Fukumi Shimura and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-27 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A creator in the medium of textiles, the author is known in Japan for her essays on color, nature, and the work of weaving and dyeing. This book collects some of the author's writings together with photographs of her art and the natural world that inspires it. From winter snows to spring blossoms, from the foothills of Japan's Southern Alps to the back streets of Gion, Kyoto, the author initiates the reader into areas of Japanese culture where the boundary between craft and art is blurred. The author offers insight into the sources and use of natural color, along with a glimpse into the world of Japanese textiles, from silkworm and loom to finished kimono. Travels from Basho's Deep North to the western island of Kyushu are recorded, as are accounts of the author's encounters with other figures in Japanese aesthetics such as lacquerware master Kuroda Tatsuaki and poet-critic Ōoka Makoto.--adapted from jacket.

Book Sor Juana M sica

Download or read book Sor Juana M sica written by Pamela H. Long and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her lost treatise on music which she titled El caracol, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz addressed the image of the spiral as a metaphor for musical harmony, an image which she distilled in one of her romances. Singing in the choir of the Templo de San Jerónimo, Sor Juana and the other nuns of her convent were raising the tone of their musica humana to be in accord with the music of the heavenly choirs, which the nuns were imitating in their singing. Octavio Paz theorizes a «triple interés» in music in Sor Juana's works: «práctico, teórico, filósofico». Numerous poems allude to the theoretical and philosophical problems of music, resulting in many levels of metaphor and metonym concerning music, especially in the loas and villancicos. Not only does Sor Juana's work address the metaphysical aspects of music, the musica speculative so popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but it broaches important questions on the practical applications of new theories of musical harmony: the musica practica. A talented poet, playwright, scientist, and mathematician, Sor Juana also explored musical instruments and theory. Sor Juana/Música investigates the musical aspects of Sor Juana's literary achievements, exploring the dense metaphorical interplay of musical and literary images, and places her works within the musicological ambience of her time. With its interdisciplinary approach, Sor Juana/Música contributes not only to the understanding of Sor Juana's literary works, but also to the degree that literature underpins the other arts as it illuminates the musicological times in which she lived.

Each of the profiled artists offers a candid self-portrait that explores areas from training and compositional techniques to working in a exclusive canon that has existed for a very long time. Book Agustin Lara

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Grant Wood
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-06-13
  • ISBN : 0199892466
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Agustin Lara written by Andrew Grant Wood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Mexican musicians in the twentieth century achieved as much notoriety or had such an international impact as the popular singer and songwriter Agustín Lara (1897-1970). Widely known as "el flaco de oro" ("the Golden Skinny"), this remarkably thin fellow was prolific across the genres of bolero, ballad, and folk. His most beloved "Granada", a song so enduring that it has been covered by the likes of Mario Lanza, Frank Sinatra, and Placido Domingo, is today a standard in the vocal repertory. However, there exists very little biographical literature on Lara in English. In Agustín Lara: A Cultural Biography, author Andrew Wood's informed and informative placement of Lara's work in a broader cultural context presents a rich and comprehensive reading of the life of this significant musical figure. Lara's career as a media celebrity as well as musician provides an excellent window on Mexican society in the mid-twentieth century and on popular culture in Latin America. Wood also delves into Lara's music itself, bringing to light how the composer's work unites a number of important currents in Latin music of his day, particularly the bolero. With close musicological focus and in-depth cultural analysis riding alongside the biographical narrative, Agustin Lara: A Cultural Biography is a welcome read to aficionados and performers of Latin American musics, as well as a valuable addition to the study of modern Mexican music and Latin American popular culture as a whole.

Apocalipsis 21:1-5, 26-27; 22:3-5

Book excerpt: Computers are more and more becoming creative tools in music as well as in the visual arts and design. In the last few years, it has become clear that digital technology provides a platform for multimedia productions as well as a medium for new art forms. Computer Music and Computer Graphics & Animation have their own international forums. The need was felt, however, to bring together the diverse disciplines within art and technology in one international event - the First International Symposium on Electronic Art (FISEA). The Symposium attracted considerable interest and hundreds of papers and proposals were submitted, of which a selection were accepted. This book, also published as a supplement to the journal Leonardo, publishes 20 of these selected papers under the editorship of Wim van der Plas, Ton Hokken and Johan den Biggelaar. This richly illustrated issue on Electronic Art reflects the enormous international interest which FISEA generated and will further stimulate interest in applications of new technology in music, visual arts and design.
