Download or read book The Spheres of Heaven written by D.C. Johnson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The working title of my novel was Metamorphosis, for transmutation was the vehicle by which I intended to explore the concept of identity. There is abundant research on the effects of nature and nurture and their repercussions on personality development. It is well documented that our genes dictate our traits and that our exposure to experiences in the world mould our attitudes, principles and morals which, in turn, enable the intellect to forge and govern our attitudes and behaviour. Our identities, the perceptions others have of them, and the perception we have of the perception others have of them, carry a huge burden. The weak often struggle with the paranoia of self-identity; the strong appear to glide through life unaffected but often paddle furiously in deep running waters. My thesis embraces a belief in universal self-doubt and the tenuous grasp we have on the nature and structure of our existence and on how we define ourselves, within this context. It explores, by means of control experiment, (transmutation), the reference points of our existence, both the unwarranted pride and abhorrence we recognise in ourselves and, above all, the enigma that is our identity.
Download or read book The Secret Lives of the Kudzu Debutantes written by Cathy Holton and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2008-05-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotillion: A formal gathering of bright young women on the verge of entering adulthood, the society pages, and prospective high-tax-bracket marriages. Think a Civil War reenactment with crisp, clean white dresses. Catfight: An impromptu gathering of not-so-young women on the verge of losing their cool. Think a cotillion with hair-pulling. It’s been more than a year since the Kudzu Debutantes exacted sweet, merciless revenge on their cheating husbands, but the repercussions are still palpable throughout Ithaca, Georgia: Nita is anxiously preparing herself for marriage to Jimmy Lee, a man thirteen years her junior; Lavonne, despite having dropped her husband–and eighty pounds–and launched her own business, longs for love; and while Eadie remains married to Trevor, she feels more neglected than ever. So the occasion of Nita’s second wedding seems like just the ticket to cheer up the disconsolate Debs. But they’ve made a formidable enemy in Virginia Broadwell, first lady of Ithaca and the bride’s ex-mother-in-law. Hell-bent on vengeance and determined to restore old-school social mores, Virginia hatches a plan so devious it makes her pedicured toes curl in anticipation. Soon enough, the women are knocked for a loop–but you can keep a Kudzu Debutante down for only so long. The one thing stronger than Virginia’s wrath is the bond between the three friends, who soon learn that one of Virginia’s Jimmy Choos contains an irresistible Achilles’ heel. With spirit, wit, and down-home gumption, the take-no-prisoners trio decides it’s time to ditch their cotillion manners as they rally to save Nita’s marriage, Lavone’s business, Eadie’s sanity . . . and the honor of Kudzu Debs the world over. Packed with authentic Southern flavor and characters as colorful as an azalea in full bloom, The Secret Lives of the Kudzu Debutantes serves up stinging one-liners and earthy wisdom in equal measure.
Download or read book Sonny s House of Spies written by George Ella Lyon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonny is only one of the spies at the Bradshaw house in Mozier, Alabama. But as a child he saw a tray full of dinner come flying across the front hall at his father. His mother's aim was dead on. And Daddy's departure promptly followed. Loretta, Sonny's older sister, spies by eavesdropping. As she tells him, "How else am I going to survive in a family tight-lipped as tombs?" But the kids' spying only scratches the surface of what's really going on in this 1950s family in the deep South. While Deaton, the youngest, worries about pirates and vampires, and Uncle Marty, family protector, serves up scripture with every bite at the Circle of Life donut shop, somebody is watching. Somebody unsuspected by Sonny. But at thirteen he knows something's fishy, and he intends to find out what. That's why one Friday after Uncle Marty pays him for dishwashing at the Circle of Life, he sneaks out of town, first by bike and then by bus. Selma, his mama; Mamby; Nissa; Uncle Sink; Aunt Roo; his sister and brother -- nobody from that all-too-serious but often hilarious crew has a clue where he's gone. And even Sonny can't say exactly what he's after, until those tight-lipped tombs start talking, and life in the house on Rhubarb changes for good.
Download or read book The Floatplane Notebooks written by Clyde Edgerton and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel set in North Carolina is “warmly humorous, gossipy, and rich―a book with the soul of a family reunion” (The New York Times Book Review). The Copeland family goes back a long way in North Carolina. Albert Copeland keeps a written record, of sorts, in some notebooks he bought back in 1956 to log the flights of his home-built floatplane. He embarked on that project when the kids were still little, but now they’re all grown: Thatcher has a son of his own; Meredith and Mark are back from Vietnam; and Noralee is off dating hippies. The notebooks are thick with the floatplane’s failures to lift off, and bulging with color Polaroids of the wisteria blossoms near the family plot, favorite family dogs, and Thatcher and Bliss’s wedding; records of Noralee’s height and weight; a diagram of the graveyard; a newspaper story about wild-child Meredith’s many backfired schemes. This novel travels back in time more than one hundred years, to the Copeland bride who first planted the wisteria by the back porch that would take over the surrounding woods, and then back to the present again to show how even though times change, people are pretty much the same. “Among the wisest, most heartfelt writing to emerge from the South in our generation . . . Meredith Copeland’s first-person account of his Vietnam experience, homecoming, and physical paralysis in North Carolina is breathtakingly stark, full, and real.” ―Los Angeles Times “The Floatplane Notebooks has all the marks of a master storyteller going straight for the mystery itself. All the marks, that is, of a new American classic.” ―The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “A wonderful celebration of family and tradition, with warts, humor, tragedy, and triumph . . . An exceedingly rich book, a celebration of the human spirit that is brilliantly conceived, structured, and executed.” ―The Cincinnati Post

Book excerpt: Loretta D’Angelo doesn’t want to get married. Being dumped by her fiancé just months before her wedding was fine with her. She loves her life as a single woman in New York City, indulging in gourmet ice-cream, getting the occasional mud-mask facial, and working for a tacky talk show that specializes in screaming and scrapping among its philandering guests. If only she could tune out her pushy family and their constant match-making attempts. Josh Kaplan has no interest in getting married, either, although maybe he ought to. He’s been with his girlfriend Melanie for years, but for some reason he just hasn’t felt the urge to pop the question. He’s busy fighting for tenants’ rights and playing chess with his elderly friend Solly, who’s got women problems of his own. Melanie is busy, too, although what she’s busy with, Josh isn’t sure. When Loretta’s job suddenly hinges on her being hooked up with a blind date on the show, Josh is the ideal foil. He has no more interest in a romance than she does. He’s got Melanie. And if Loretta pretends he’s her boyfriend, her family will get off her case. What could possibly go wrong?

One distraction has resulted in her agreeing to participate in a fundraiser spearheaded by her Aunt Loretta. Now Miserable Maggie is about to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Another could land her in some very hot water. With all these distractions she’s stretched thin and itchy (sooo itchy!).
