Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rape of Proserpine: With Other PoemsIn the Rape of Proserpine the author seems to have enlarged with considerable variation, upon the fable sketched out by ovid in his Metamorphoses; the con struction is not purely epic; the most important incidents are too much hurried in the opening of the piece, and other deviations from strict rule may be found; yet such is the splendor and majesty of this beautiful production.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: You will remember that Socrates considers every soul of us to be at least three persons. He says, in a fine figure, that we are two horses and a charioteer. "The right-hand horse is upright and cleanly made; he has a lofty neck and an aquiline nose; his colour is white and his eyes dark; he is a lover of honour and modesty and temperance, and the follower of true glory; he needs no touch of the whip, but is guided by word and admonition only. The other is a crooked lumbering animal, put together anyhow; he has a short thick neck; he is flat-faced and of a dark colour, with grey eyes of blood-red complexion; the mate of insolence and pride, shag-eared and deaf, hardly yielding to whip and spur." I need not go on to examine with the philosopher the acts of this pair under the whip and spur of love, because I am not going to talk about love. For my present purpose I shall suggest another dichotomy.

Download or read book A Book of Myths written by Jean Lang and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Book of Myths" deals in a most entertaining manner with the mythology of Greece and Rome and many other noted lands. Added to the pleasure of the story there is the lure of the legend and the spell of old ways and customs. Not only many of the most celebrated are retold, but also many of the less well-known tales. The aim of the author, it is stated, has been to simplify for those who are not erudite scholars the stories of mythology, to which constant reference is made not only in classic, but in modern poetry, and to direct the attention of readers to poems which are not already known to them. Included are tales of Prometheus, Pygmalion, Orpheus, Perseus, King Midas, Pan, the Lorelei, Baldur and many more.
