Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abū Ma’͑šar’s Great Introduction to Astrology (mid-ninth century) is the most comprehensive and influential text on astrology in the Middle Ages. In addition to presenting astrological doctrine, it provides a detailed justification for the validity of astrology and establishes its basis within the natural sciences of the philosophers. These two volumes provide a critical edition of the Arabic text; a facing English translation, which includes references to the divergences in the twelfth-century Latin translations of John of Seville and Hermann of Carinthia (Volume 1); and the large fragment of a Greek translation (edited by David Pingree). Comprehensive Arabic, English, Greek and Latin glossaries enable one to trace changes in vocabulary and terminology as the text passed from one culture to another. (Volume 2.)

Download or read book Zodiac Island written by Emma Dil and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-03-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life begins for our characters on an island created especially for their occupation by the twelve Lords of the Zodiac and their King. Although continuous, the story is split up into six episodes, each one being an adventure set around two signs of the zodiac with their responding characters. I have brought in a little mythology, albeit with a generous helping of poetic licence, but feel that it works! The idea is to highlight the way two very different beings behave in various circumstances and their interaction with one another. Hopefully with each adventure, individual personality traits emerge as a chain of events unfolds. The story reaches a crescendo with the most important event of the year, when the King of the Zodiac visits the island to oversee the New Year festivities. A prologue explains how the island came about; how the Lords of the Zodiac found their ideal beings and its occupants are introduced one by one. The full thirteen representatives of the zodiac, when not ‘starring’ in a tale, all play supporting roles to extend their influence on the plots. I have tried to make the pairing up of the zodiac signs interesting, which in itself was a challenge. Read on and enjoy! Emma Dil

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are there credible reasons to believe many of the constellation and star names were given by inspiration of God? God's Signature in the Stars explores these ancient star names and their meanings to reveal the answer. The Bible states that God named the stars: "He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name" (Isa 40:26). These starry hosts appear in the night sky as God's "character actors," performing their roles on his celestial stage. God is the creator, writer, and director of this heavenly drama and cosmic dance. "By day and by night," his "starry hosts" are flickering above the footlights in God's theater in the sky!

Download or read book Passion and Order written by Carol Lansing and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way in which a society expresses grief can reveal how it views both intense emotions and public order. In thirteenth-century Italian communes, a conscious effort to change appropriate public reaction to death threw into sharp relief connections among urban politics, gender expectations, and understandings of emotionality. In Passion and Order, Carol Lansing explores a dramatic change in thinking and practice about emotional restraint. This shift was driven by politics and understood in terms of gender. Thirteenth-century court cases reveal that male elites were accustomed to mourning loudly and demonstratively at funerals. As many as a hundred men might gather in a town's streets and squares to weep and cry out, even tear at their beards and clothing. Yet these elites enacted laws against such emotional display and proceeded to pay the fines levied against themselves for violating their own legislation. Political theorists used gender norms to urge men to restrain their passions; histrionic grieving, like lust, was now considered "womanish." Lawmakers drew on a complex of gendered ideas about grief and public order to characterize governance in ways that linked the self and the state. They articulated their beliefs in terms of rules of decorum, how men and women need to behave in order to live together in society. Lansing demonstrates this change through a rich combination of sources: archival records from Orvieto, Bologna, and Perugia; political treatises; literary works, notably Petrarch's letters; and representations of grief in painting and sculpture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planets are positioned in different Rasis (signs) and Bhavas (houses) with respect to a particular ascendant at the particular time of birth. Accordingly, each planet is subjected to many influences as per its placement in a particular rasi and bhava with respect to the placement of other planets. As such, the benefit and malefic tendencies of each planet differ in each horoscope. For example, the benefic or malefic tendency of a planet may differ as per its placement in exaltation/ debilitation rasi, own rasi/star, friendly/enemy rasi/star, different bhavas as per its own lordship and as per its associations and aspects by other friendly/enemy planets, etc. Each of these placements, aspects, associations are not of equal importance and each bhava is also subjected to the influence of different planets. In this book, a methodology is given to evolve the benefic and malefic percentage of a planet and bhavas in a horoscope considering all the influences that they would be subjected to along with suitable weights for each type of the influence. The predictions of all planets as per their benefit or malefic tendencies with respect to their placement in different races and bhavas are enumerated separately under different topics of body, health, temperament and personality, wealth, courage, education, houses and landed property, happiness, children, diseases, enemies, debts, marriage and marital relationship, longevity, prosperity, professions, gains and income, losses and expenditure. Planets are subjected to different influences in a horoscope and they are analysed scientifically giving suitable weights for every condition to arrive at the benefic and malefic percentage of each planet. Similarly bhavas are analysed. Based on these benefic & malefic percentage analysis of planets & bhavas, broad life and yearly predictions can be given. The whole scheme is computerised.
