Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “… Lord, teach us to pray …” Luke 11:1 As the Lord’s people, the church is called to pray—it is a calling, a right, and a great privilege. There is no calling or power greater than prayer. Prayer links the church to God. “Let thy will be done as in heaven so upon the earth.” When the Lord burdens our heart to pray, we soon realize that we do not know how—it is not in us to pray. It causes us to turn to our Lord and cry out: “Lord, teach us to pray; we need to learn to take up Your burdens; teach us.” In Richmond, Virginia, from February 1981 through October 1982, Stephen Kaung gave a series of messages on corporate prayer. During this period, he shared at the beginning of prayer meetings held every Wednesday evening. These spoken messages have been transcribed into this book. The spoken form has been preserved with only necessary editing for clarity. Some of the matters discussed for prayer are specific to the saints praying in Richmond; however, they are included because they contain principles that could be of help to all God’s people.

Book excerpt: Since this book was published over a century ago, countless readers have learned through its pages that no one can teach prayer better than Jesus Christ himself. This enduring classic will transform your prayers and life as you open your heart to the prayer-lessons Jesus gave."The Father waits to hear every prayer of faith. He wants to give us whatever we ask for in Jesus' name. If there is one thing I think the Church needs to learn, it is that God intends prayer to have an answer, and that we have not yet fully conceived of what God will do for us if we believe that our prayers will be heard. God hears prayer."(cover image courtesy of Billy Alexander)

Book excerpt: There is no gainsaying about it that prayer is the major, if not the only, way through which a Christian can communicate with God. This is the only way through which Jesus Himself said we should reach Him. He said "If you abide in Me, and My Words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done to you" John 15: 6 and we saw examples of several people in the Bible that called on God in prayer and God heard them. It is also a common thing to find people around us, or even ourselves, pray with no sign of answer to the prayer. It must then excite our senses of understanding to examine the question of the apostles when they went to Jesus one day as Luke recorded it as "Once Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he stopped praying, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples." Luke 11:1.We may wait and ask some questions here, did it mean the disciple that went to Jesus had not been praying or did they expect something different with the kingdom of Christ coming? Definitely, the later makes more sense reading through this Chapter that, though the disciples had been praying as Jews, they were expecting Jesus to have a different kind of prayer that would fit His mission! Again, they observed John teaching his disciples how to pray which might have been different from the way they were taught to pray as a Jew. So, if John, being a different person in the society like Jesus as touching the kingdom of God, was teaching something new about pray, the disciples then expected Jesus to have something new. Likewise today, though we might have learnt from different places about prayers and might have even seen many people calling on the name of the Lord at different places, we still need to put ourselves under the directive of Jesus, through His words, to teach us how to pray as He would have it.
