Book Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell Middle Aged Country Gentleman Came to Live by the Sword

Download or read book Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell Middle Aged Country Gentleman Came to Live by the Sword written by Elanor Moreschi and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early years of the Civil War witnessed not only his military apprenticeship -- for unlike most of his colleagues and opponents he had no experience of war -- but also the forging of the instrument with which the Civil War was won. The cavalry regiments of the Eastern Association and the New Model Army were largely Cromwell's work. With these hand-picked, well-trained, and disciplined troops Cromwell was possessed of an advantage denied to otherwise skilled commanders like Waller. Soldier, politician, statesman -- Cromwell is most frequently compared with Caesar and Napoleon. All of them in the last resort owed their rise to their military skill. In Cromwell's case, given the circumstances of the first forty years of his life, this was an extraordinary, almost inexplicable talent. But like it or not, this pious, slovenly, middle-aged country gentleman came to live by the sword. This book is a short story of Cromwell - one of the strongest and most powerful proponents of the English Reformation. He helped to engineer an annulment of the king's marriage to Catherine of Aragon so that Henry could lawfully marry Anne Boleyn. He also charted an evangelical and reformist course for the Church of England from the unique posts of Vicegerent in Spirituals and vicar-general

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes Cromwell's quotes about his life and career *Includes a bibliography for further reading "Necessity hath no law. Feigned necessities, imagined necessities...are the greatest cozenage that men can put upon the Providence of God, and make pretenses to break known rules by." - Oliver Cromwell "Put your trust in God, my boys, but keep your powder dry." - attributed to Oliver Cromwell For over a thousand years, England has had a monarchy, and though the line of succession did not always pass smoothly, it has almost always been continuous. England has more often been faced with the claims of competing kings and queens than with a period of no monarch at all. The major exception to that rule came in the 11 years between 1649 and 1660, when England was a republic. Following the disastrous reign of Charles I and the civil wars that led to his execution, Parliament and the army ruled England. England's republican experiment started out as a work of collaboration and compromise; lords, army officers and members of Parliament (MPs) worked together to find a political settlement that did not include the despised royal House of Stuart. Nonetheless, religious and political division made collective rule unworkable, and ultimately, one man emerged from the chaos to rule the country. He had risen from a humble background to become the leading general of the Civil Wars, and as a man of staunch beliefs and ruthless pragmatism, he controlled England from 1653-1658 under the title of Lord Protector. In essence, he was a king in all but name. That man was Oliver Cromwell, and in the popular imagination, Cromwell has overshadowed the rest of the leaders of the parliamentary cause and the New Model Army. His name is known by everyone in England, while parliamentary leaders like John Pym, constitutional reformers like John Lambert, and even Sir Thomas Fairfax, who led Parliament's army through most of the wars, are known only to history buffs. But Cromwell has also been one of the most controversial figures in English history ever since. Viewed by some as a despot and others as a champion of liberty, Cromwell's legacy is so diverse that while many Irish accuse him of genocide, others look at him as a social revolutionary. To this day Cromwell is a hugely divisive figure, hated by the Irish for his brutality, loathed by monarchists, but admired by republicans and English reformers. A film was released in 1970 celebrating his political career, and St Ives, one of his home towns, is host to a statue of the man. Of course, some observers recognize contradictions in Cromwell, such as the 20th century Scottish writer John Buchan, who may have summed the Lord Protector's life up best: "A devotee of law, he was forced to be often lawless; a civilian to the core, he had to maintain himself by the sword; with a passion to construct, his task was chiefly to destroy; the most scrupulous of men, he had to ride roughshod over his own scruples and those of others; the tenderest, he had continually to harden his heart; the most English of our greater figures, he spent his life in opposition to the majority of Englishmen; a realist, he was condemned to build that which could not last." Oliver Cromwell: The Notorious Life and Legacy of the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England chronicles the tumultuous life of one of England's most important figures. Along with pictures and a bibliography, you will learn about Cromwell like never before, in no time at all.

Book The Fall of Cromwell s Republic and the Return of the King

Download or read book The Fall of Cromwell s Republic and the Return of the King written by Timothy Venning and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book completes the series of studies of the 'British Revolution of the Three Kingdoms of England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland' and covers the period from the fall of the 'failed state' and Protectorate in 1657 to the restoration of the Stuart monarchy and Charles II in 1660, examines the Restoration settlement in depth and a high point in Stuart pro-French and Catholic policy - contrary to the 1660 Restoration understanding when Charles II vowed reluctance 'go on {his} travels again' and follows the Stuart Restoration and pro-French - and pro-Catholic foreign policy to 1670. Cromwell's death had signaled the end of an overarching figure who held the failing state together and began England's nascent 'great power' foreign and 'colonial' policy. It covers Richard Cromwell's emergence and as a figure far from the 'Tumbledown Dick' of popular legend. Also, the remarkable role of General George Monck as the genial military man guiding the failing and chaotic state to Restoration and stability. Monck underpinned the gentry and merchant class as the root of state and society which outlived civil wars, military dictatorship, political chaos and Stuart monarchical rule.

Book Following in the Footsteps of Oliver Cromwell

Download or read book Following in the Footsteps of Oliver Cromwell written by James Hobson and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique biography of the military commander and politician who remains one of Britain’s most controversial figures centuries after his death. One of the most important figures in British history, Oliver Cromwell was both soldier and politician and the only non-Royal ruler of Britain in a thousand years. His actions and ideas still have political and social consequences today, and his legacy still divides people. Love him or loathe him, Cromwell still matters. This book is a history of his life through the places in Britain and Ireland where he lived, visited, ruled, or fought. Following in the Footsteps of Oliver Cromwell begins in Huntingdon in 1599, with the respectable but unimportant Cromwell family living under the shadow of richer relatives. Civil War and Cromwell’s controversial successes at Marston Moor, Naseby, Basing House, and Worcester transform him into the most powerful person in Britain, saving him from obscurity and moving him from a modest house in Ely to Hampton Court Palace. Cromwell is involved in the execution of King Charles I outside the Banqueting House, his own coronation in Westminster Hall, and bloody slaughter in Ireland. Even his death in 1658 does not end the controversy—as his enemies take revenge on his corpse and the debate about his legacy begins.
