Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born to extremely young parents on August 9, 1963. raised by my mothers mother a God-fearing woman, Mother Jimmie Ann Lewis who surely deserves honorable mention and more. I have always been an avid reader and I have always put my thoughts on paper. I believe it began while in Junior High I wrote poetry and short stories. I even entered a few contests; not much ever became of that. But what I would really like you to know is when youre young you make a lot of mistakes...my husband and I worked hard at getting our credit together so we could purchase a home and just so happens that we chose a realtor who was a scheista and then we purchased a house in the middle of the ghetto; imagine that. Well, needless to say they were selling drugs out the back door and shootin each other out the front door. I am a native of Pennsylvania but several months before my 38th birthday I pondered my circumstances and realized I had been in Harrisburg all my life and it was high time for me to leave. After I had this epiphany I was determined not to celebrate 38 years in my hometown. Hence, we loaded up the truck and we moved to Beverly, no we actually moved to St. Louis, MO; to the place of my husbands birth (he wanted to be closer to his family). After only 18 months there we decided to move one more time and we are now transplants to Arizona. Lets go back, I forgot to tell you that all the while the shooting and the drug dealing was going I was petitioning heaven and this was my prayer...Lord, please increase my quality of living. Dont know exactly what I expected but after leaving the city of St. Louis where someone would go joyriding in our cars every other night, arriving in AZ and paying six hundred and some odd dollars a month for a two bedroom in a complex that had a pool I was sure God had responded. Weve been in Arizona for 7 years and weve been blessed to purchase a 4,000sf home, we have natural children, adopted children and foster children and God has done exceeding abundantly more than I asked. Not only that I picked up my pen again and O the things that God has to say! Who knew?

Book Tales of Witchcraft and Wonder

Download or read book Tales of Witchcraft and Wonder written by Claude Lecouteux and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Offers commentary for each story, revealing its historical context, cultural and esoteric associations, and hidden pagan beliefs • Explores how the tales transformed over the ages and their origins in Classical Antiquity, the Middle East, and India • Includes stories never-before-translated from their original Latin and many purposely left in obscurity due to scandalous depictions of popes and other notables The Middle Ages witnessed the blossoming of oral traditions whose echoes can still be found in many legends, fables, and tales today. In this collection of medieval tales of witchcraft, wonder, and the supernatural, Claude and Corinne Lecouteux explain how many of these stories arose in Classical Antiquity while some made their way into Dark Ages Europe from the Middle East and India. Offering commentary for each tale, the authors place them in historical context and analyze their cultural and esoteric associations. They include stories never- before-translated from their original Latin or demotic versions and show how, unlike the well-known fairy tales made popular by the Brothers Grimm, many stories were purposely left in obscurity because they presented scandalous depictions of popes and other notables. Additionally, for many of the tales, the authors scrupulously peel back the Christian veneer to show how the stories were instrumental in assuring the survival of age-old pagan beliefs across the centuries. These beliefs are explored through tales of animals with magical powers and the ability to converse with humans, including the tale of the Grateful Lion made famous through Aesop’s fables; stories of individuals with supernatural or otherworldly powers, like the Venomous Maiden who poisons all men who have relations with her; legends of miracles and wondrous things that violate the laws of nature, such as people returning from the dead to help a descendant; and stories of witchcraft, magic, and demonic apparitions, including the pope who was a disguised demon. The authors also explore tales of supernatural spouses and illicit love affairs, wisdom teachings and parables of fools, and heroic legends.

Book The Raven and Eagle series

Download or read book The Raven and Eagle series written by Geraint Jones and published by Canelo. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman Empire looms large. Battle and glory await... Includes all three books in The Raven and Eagle series; Legion, Traitor and Rebel. Legion: AD 6: The greatest army assembled in a generation prepares to march. But not Legionary Corvus. He and half his legion are to be left behind to garrison the province of Pannonia: a wild place where the mountains are as deadly as any foe. Corvus despairs as he watches his closest friend Marcus march to war, not knowing that his own eager thirst for battle is about to be quenched. A huge rebel army has revolted against the Empire, and Corvus and his few comrades are all that stand against them... Traitor: In the bloodied mountains of Pannonia, the Roman army struggles to put down a brutal rebellion. Corvus is now the standard bearer of the Eighth Legion, which has borne the brunt of the fighting. The famed soldier has lost one comrade after another, and now his oldest friend, Marcus, has betrayed him, shaking him to his core. Sick of the conflict, Corvus deserts his legion and rides for home to end his days in peace. But there is no escaping Rome, or its vengeance. Corvus might want a simple life, but when tragedy strikes, he is hauled back into the savage war. And this time, he won’t be fighting on the Roman side... Rebel: At last, the Roman Empire is winning one of its most savage wars. King Pinnes is dead. The Pannonian tribes have surrendered. Only the Dalmatians under Bato remain in the fight, and this brutal leader holds the life of a former Roman standard bearer in his hands. Corvus is spared only on condition that he continues to fight against Rome as a rebel, but his enemies are everywhere. Not only do the Romans want his head, but the treacherous Ziva – his supposed ally – is a constant threat. With the Pannonians knocked out of the war, the entire might of Rome is directed against Bato’s army. Legion after legion covers the landscape. Sieges are laid. Towns burn. Thousands die. There is no mercy. And there, in the fire of the rebellion’s last stand, Corvus must face his greatest betrayer... Book Speak Not

Download or read book Speak Not written by James Griffiths and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Yorker Best Book of 2022 A Globe & Mail Book of the Year "A stimulating work on the politics of language." LA Review of Books As globalisation continues languages are disappearing faster than ever, leaving our planet's linguistic diversity leaping towards extinction. The science of how languages are acquired is becoming more advanced and the internet is bringing us new ways of teaching the next generation, however it is increasingly challenging for minority languages to survive in the face of a handful of hegemonic 'super-tongues'. In Speak Not, James Griffiths reports from the frontlines of the battle to preserve minority languages, from his native Wales, Hawaii and indigenous American nations, to southern China and Hong Kong. He explores the revival of the Welsh language as a blueprint for how to ensure new generations are not robbed of their linguistic heritage, outlines how loss of indigenous languages is the direct result of colonialism and globalisation and examines how technology is both hindering and aiding the fight to prevent linguistic extinction. Introducing readers to compelling characters and examining how indigenous communities are fighting for their languages, Griffiths ultimately explores how languages hang on, what happens when they don't, and how indigenous tongues can be preserved and brought back from the brink.
